  3. La La Land looks fantastic to me. I just think Manchester is gonna be a showier writing showcase.
  4. La La Land Loving 20th Century Women Birth of a Nation (but maybe not) The Lobster (definitely won't win) Zootopia Nothing there looks as strong as an acclaimed playwright and filmmaker like Lonergan with what's supposed to be a great piece of work according to many who've seen it.
  5. Didn't see an actual thread for this. Not a big fan of the trailer specifically, between the generic triumphant music and the dumb aggressive "Could be in the running for an Oscar!" pull-quotes, but still very much anticipating the movie itself. Hoping for a strong writing and acting showcase if nothing else.
  6. I'm sure he'll do an inspired score but damn I was hoping they'd get Vangelis to deliver some new magic with this. Not like he's retired or anything.
  7. That plane scene does look bonkers in a good way. The rest is dire. And yeah I love that Samara is still gonna call you on a touchtone landline
  8. How have I not consciously realized until this moment that this is not just a Denzel-Fuqua reunion but a Denzel-Fuqua-Hawke Training Day one too. Now I really wish Hawke was playing Pratt's role.
  9. I'm thinking this is between Scorsese and Chazelle unless we get someone out of left field. Parker is out, Ang Lee already has two statues, Villeneuve's is an unambiguous sci-fi movie, Lonergan's is more of a writer's movie, Washington would have to seriously up his game to be considered for a win. Who else is there? I'd love it to be James Gray but it'll be a long shot even if the movie blows everyone away.
  10. I can't get enough of those colors and art direction. They're not exactly extinct but it's so good to see a movie that, no matter the scale of the story, really looks like big, gorgeous cinema. I haven't had such a strong sense of "I should see this on the biggest screen I can find" since The Hateful Eight.
  11. This would make a great double feature with Thunderbolt and Lightfoot. Both tonally fluid, lived-in crime/heist flicks populated with great character actors and filled with gorgeous landscape shots, and the 25-year-old Bridges plays a bank robber in T&L so you can better reflect on the passage of time along the way
  12. Bridges can play Cogburn as long as he wants really, won't get any complaints from me
  13. Was hoping for a $1m Friday for Hell or High Water. Disappointed. Looks like it'll crawl to a $15m total at best.
  14. This is the first movie since True Grit that actually gives him good enough material to go along with that persona. I remember going to see 3:10 to Yuma 9 years ago and being amazed at this dude I never seen before stealing all attention away from Bale and Crowe. It's the world's loss he never became a proper movie star, but at least he occasionally gets great roles like this one. "Lord of the plains..."

Are these questions the simple ramblings of a crazy jetlagged maniac? I know, right 14/20 - 2000 15/20 - 3000 16/20 - 5000 17/20 - 7000 18/20 - 9000 19/20 - 12000 20/20 - 15000 Part 2 1.
