  1. Fuck yeah Suspiria and Cook/Thief/Wife/Lover. The latter's ending is one of the very few (can count them on one hand) movie moments where I actually started involuntarily shaking from excitement because it was so glorious.
  2. I guess I gotta give it credit for at least looking bad an interesting way. Cause it looks fucking bizarre.
  3. I guess now I know what a bad version of The Babadook would look like. The monster is not just a physical manifestation of depression but also a ghost of an actual person with a clichéd and needless backstory, there's little compelling about any of the characters (Palmer does her best though), and no real style to speak of - technically it's pretty bland and unimaginative. As drama, it fails completely, and as horror, it just takes the single creepy image of a figure standing in the dark and milks it for all it's worth, which makes the movie feel monotonous and overlong despite actually being just 80 minutes. And then there's the seriously wrongheaded, cheap ending which basically suggests that people suffering from depression should kill themselves so as to not bother their loved ones.
  4. Stewart is so great in this precisely because she never makes an impression that she's doing any heavy lifting. It's a completely effortless and natural performance.

  7. I read that the novel The Spectacular Now is based on ends with , and I would have respected the film much more if it had the balls to keep that ending instead of pulling a half-assed Good Will Hunting.
  8. a bit too airy and distant for me overall, but Stewart's performance is one of my favorites of the last few years.
  9. The kid having so little personality is the one major drawback, but it's beautifully directed and Shannon, Dunst, Edgerton and Driver bring a lot of humanity and warmth to the characters who may not be much on paper.
  10. http://letterboxd.com/n_komarov/ Hopefully I'll update it some time.
  11. I doubt I'll see this, but I gotta love Diesel's earnest enthusiasm towards everything he does, in this case trying to bring us all back into 2003. This looks incredibly dumb, but it could end up being incredibly dumb fun.
  12. I don't care who you are back in the world, you diss my favorite movies sight unseen one more time, I'll bleed ya, real quiet. Leave ya here. Got that?
  13. Yeah, same. I feel like a total old guy saying this, but for a Western it just looks so... toothless and polished. The extent to which it feels like flashy corporate product is off-putting to me, even though I'll probably end up seeing it anyway, if only for the scenery and some of the actors.
