  1. Minions feels like the perfect strike of comedy that's obviously appealing to mass audiences, but has just enough wit and charm to appeal to even critics and more discerning film fans. The minions offer something for everyone. People underestimate how hard that is to pull off with a comedy.
  2. They probably go with Hiro's plan because they know how distant he has been since Tadashi died, and they knew that Hiro really wanted to do this in order to gain new purpose and improve his emotional state which has been damage ever since.
  3. It's been so long since I've seen posts like this. Everything is back in place.
  4. 1. Inside Out 2. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 3. Bridge of Spies 4. The Martian 5. Midnight Special 6. Trainwreck 7. Me & Earl & The Dying Girl 8. Minions 9. Sicario 10. Zootopia
  5. I defer you to DamienRoc's comment a few pages back, as they tackle a similar reply with more grace than I probably could. So basically, obviously these issues in third world countries matter, but don't pretend that people have nothing to complain about here. Besides, what you're doing is a variant of the parental brain teaser 'Don't be a crybaby, think of the starving children in Africa!'.
  6. Who can forget this classic moment in cinema?
  7. Cinetopia is a new film festival starting up in Southeast Michigan, based mainly in Ann Arbor and Detroit. I'm proud to say that I have a student pass to the festival and will be reporting back to y'all about movies and festival atmosphere. It's still growing in its third year, but this is the first time it has lasted over a week. Last weekend was based mainly in Detroit, so this weekend is mainly based in Ann Arbor. I will be seeing the following movies: http://www.cinetopiafestival.org/ Friday Macaroni and Cheese - A French romantic dramedy in a similar style to Girls. Gods - A Polish medical drama about the first heart transplant in 1984. Saturday A selection of Sundance Shorts Becoming Bulletproof - A documentary about people with disabilities starring in their own movie, cause damnit, I need something lighter. Catch Me Daddy - A visually striking thriller set in the UK countryside Best of Enemies - A documentary on the televised debates between Gore Vidal and William Buckley Slow West - An art-house style western with Michael Fassbender and Kodi Smitt-McPhee Sunday When Marnie Was There - Ghibli's new movie Imperial Dreams - A drama set in Detroit about a man released from prison seeking a fresh start Pale Moon - A Japanese drama about a woman driven mad by desire Mistress America - Baumbach's new movie with Greta Gerwig I'll use this thread to talk about these movies and answer questions about this festival.
  8. Well, you have been one for hyperbole in the past.
  9. Ah, brand identification. You have a point there, much like how iPhones collectively represent all smartphones. That's often a result of monopolization of advertising, if not that component of industry. Then again, Android seems to do just fine simply because of better prices generally. I'm not saying that there isn't a connection though. Like I said, I don't completely disagree with a lot of what you're saying. I just don't think the situation is quite as extreme as it's made out to be.
  10. By well-thought out, I primarily meant choices that aren't justified by "Cause Mr. Television told me to buy it!". Obviously advertising works to appeal to the ethos-pathos-logos trifecta within ourselves, but people will still turn to options that a financially reasonable or even preferred by friends/family. It's basically peer pressure on a much larger scale, and considering it's from mega-million-or-possibly-billion corporations, it can be problematic. Having said that, I think we should teach children while they're still young about thinking critically about advertising and not just going off of everything they say, becoming more informed consumers as a result. With this being so prevalent today, it's important that we send this message. Obviously the media and advertising won't change any time soon, but as long as we understand the effects they have on us, then it could pave the way for better decisions.
  11. I sort of agree with Tribefan here, but I see where Dash is coming from. Obviously marketing exists to exploit our desires in life (but I don't think it brainwashes us that significantly much more than our friends/family influence us to do a particular thing. To have your own, true, uncorrupted opinion, you need to isolate yourself from everything), and I can even agree that a consumerist lifestyle isn't going to do us many favors in the future. Having said that, I think this issue is a bit more complex than what people play it out to be. Let's face it, we're not really going to eradicate advertising as it is any time soon, but I don't think people like going to Starbucks and McDonalds because advertising has turned them into sheeple. In fact, they're kind of opposites. Starbucks is located everywhere, and people find it to be their most convenient option. (For what it's worth, I prefer a local Michigan place, but that's beside the point), while McDonalds and other fast food places are cheap enough that they are often popular among low income families (This applies to a lot of junk food, really. Obesity rates are shockingly high among those of lower socioeconomic status). Not saying that advertising doesn't influence people, but you have to take into account other factors too. Look, I'm not saying this isn't an issue worth considering, and I don't know enough about foreign markets to understand how advertising works there, although I imagine it functioning in a slightly similar, if less extreme manner. I'm not even totally disagreeing with you here, but I think you're underestimating society's ability for people to make well thought-out choices.
  12. So basically in Epic, that animated movie about tiny warriors protecting the forest, the characters use an iPhone to save the day.
  13. Thank god the Spy posters weren't weirdly photoshopped like the last Feig/McCarthy movie...
  14. The Graduate is pretty dull. Has a few good moments (like the ending) but as a whole, it doesn't really work for me that well.
  15. Now that WOM is spreading, legs are probably going to be great. The marketing made it seem like just another McCarthy comedy, but everything I've heard so far has been great. I may be seeing it tomorrow.
  16. Mad Max looks like it's going to finish in a position fairly aligned with The Great Gatsby.
