  1. I’m down for more Cassie and Scott action and Majors looks much more interesting as Kang than Brolin did as Thanos but it feels kind of like any other “event” MCU movie and less like Ant-Man 3, which looks much less exciting to me.
  2. Candyman 2021 is a huge step down from the original as that’s one of my favorite horror movies but it’s not as bad as I thought it’d be. I liked Little Woods and I’m cool with DeCosta getting another chance. At the very least, she’s more interesting a director than most of the other Phase 5/6 directors besides Cretton and definitely better than say Jon Watts. I don’t think Coogler will direct Secret Wars for pretty obvious reasons. I wouldn’t be opposed to Peyton getting it, as I really dig Ant-Man and the Wasp, though Quantumania looks boring.
  3. I like how every year since 2013, there’s been a big budget or blockbuster film that completely blows the others out of the water that year for me and becomes a favorite, with 2016 and 2019 being the sole exceptions (nothing really wowed me 2016, and in 2019, I think my favorite of the blockbusters was Shazam! but I don’t think it’s an all-timer for me) 2013 - Gravity (I’ve got to revisit Catching Fire but I remember being very fond of it as a teen lol) 2014 - Interstellar 2015 - Fury Road 2017 - Star Wars: The Last Jedi 2018 - Black Panther/Into The Spider-Verse 2021 - The Matrix: Resurrections/West Side Story 2022 - Avatar: The Way of Water/Nope (Turning Red could count but Chapek fucked it’s releasing, The Batman I think could get there with rewatches for me as I think it’s a damn great adaptation and Top Gun: Maverick is still pretty great but I come down on it slightly)
  4. Nah. Spider-Man 4 has more room to fall than Avatar 3.
  5. TBF it’s outsourcing. The modern budget with the exception of the Disney and Pixar joints are 80-120m. Most animation studios have their animation done overseas either by hiring some other VFX company like Paramount Animation or Warner Animation Group or their VFX studio is overseas like Illumination in France or Sony Pictures Animation in Canada. Dreamworks though is stationed in Glendale but in the heyday used it’s Glendale base or Pacific Data Images company or China for their films.
  6. @cayommagazine From director Zach Parrish (Us Again) and the studio behind Matilda and the Night Children and Gateways, comes the studio’s next original feature; the romantic comedy musical ALLEGRA. Unlike most musicals in mainstream animation where there’s royalty and magical kingdoms or high stakes adventures or singing animals, Allegra is inspired by the musical craze in the 1950s-1960s, taking place in the modern world though it does have fantasy elements, where the focus is a lot on the song and dance numbers using the art of animation to heighten them. “Taking place during the Golden Age of Broadway, world-renowned playwright Tyler the Terrific (Ewan McGreggor (Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, the Star Wars franchise)) has created some of the most spellbinding and captivating musicals and plays, but has lost his touch and drive. Luckily, his world turns upside down when he finds possibly his next big star: Allegra (Renee Elise Goldsberry (Hamilton, The Color Purple)), who not only has an incredible voice but also creates special effects that look real seemingly out of nowhere, which seems to good to be true. The catch?, Allegra happens to be an actual witch. Together, the two take Broadway by storm but also grow increasingly close to each other.” Kody Kavitha (Dead End: Paranormal Park), Elle McLemore (Heathers: The Musical) , Patti Lupone (Les Miserables, Evita, Steven Universe), Anthony Ramos (In the Heights, Ironheart) with Emma Stone (La La Land, The Amazing Spider-Man) and Keegan Michael-Key (Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey, Wonka) also make up the rest of the cast. Stephen Schwartz (The Prince of Egypt, Wicked) will help write the songs for Allegra as the movie once again harnesses the powers of Worldmeander. This time, though traditional animation is the main drawing point as Parrish envisions a style similar to Netflix/Sergio Pablos’ Klaus and Disney Animation 2023’s release, Wish. Allegra will take Lovely Buddies’ Memorial Day Y10 slot as Lovely Buddies will move to Luigi’s Mansion September slot as that film is on the backburner once more.
  7. It should. I’m thinking higher, to 150m maybe 160m as of how barren these months are until Mario. (Ant-Man weekend is a holiday one and I suspect Shazam is underperforming). I feel confident in animation making a rebound this year, primarily because the products are more appealing. Mario is probably locked for 200M and Across has a very strong chance, Trolls: Band Together seems likely to reap the good fortunes of Puss 2 and Sing 2, might even strongarm its way to 200m due to how popular that franchise is, Migration should thrive too as Comcast knows how to sell animation and with Wish being the 100th anniversary film and only holiday tentpole for Disney, it should at least do 150M. Elemental is a big question mark as I don’t believe counterprogramming for family films can happen any more apart from certain calendar configuration and I suspect Flash will be bigger than we expect. Ninja Turtles seems like a 70-90m grosser which depending on budget is okay. Either way, the slate seems more appealing than last year.
  8. PVOD is a big different. Even Peacock wouldn’t hurt because it’s not a big one like Disney+ or Netflix, hell even HBO Max would do a damper.
  9. @cayommagazine The new logline for Endless/DC’s teamup movie, The Siege of Savage has dropped: ”After the events of Green Arrow: The Ninth Circle, Static Shock: Frozen Summer and Martian Manhunter, as fears of metahuman takeover are at an all time high, Vandal Savage (Benecio del Toro) decides to make his gambit for world domination by recruiting a legion of villains to join him in creating the ultimate weapon using ancient Martian technology. Upon being alerted to this, Martian Princess M’gann (Lyric Ross) recruits and unites Earth’s heroes (Green Arrow (Charlie Hunnam), Arsenal (Lana Condor), Blue Beetle (Jake T Austin), Booster Gold (Asa Butterfield), Static (Niles Fitch), Plastic-Man (Bill Hader), and Martian Manhunter (Lance Reddick) to stop him whilst dealing with how to be a team and a new hero created by the government which will make them obsolete: AMAZO.” Familiar villains like the Static Shock franchise’s Hotstreak (Nicholas Hamilton), Blue and Gold’s Black Beetle (Michelle Rodriguez), Martian Manhunter’s Ma’alefa’ak (Laurence Fishburne), and Plastic-Man’s Kite-Man (Billy Magnussen) will join Savage’s Legion as well as well as Cheshire (Arden Cho), the most deadliest hitwoman on the planet with her own secrets. The Siege of Savage, is said to be the end of Endless’ DC Universe as the studio intends to leave the universe behind with the exception of Static Shock as Irving is attached to that character and the Green Lantern Corps series which exists in a separate universe with part three coming Christmas Y10. The Siege of Savage directed by Jeff Fowler (Sonic the Hedgehog franchise) will release July 18th, Y10.
  10. I mean it’s still a great hold, and can still likely aim for a 11-13M third weekend.
  11. I’m thinking the same for Illumination’s Migration come next year. A bigger OW than Puss but smaller than Sing 2, so like $18m OW/$35m six day/$170m total. The Christmas slot is very lucrative for animation. Spies in Disguise suffered mainly from Disney but still had strong legs. Ferdinand would’ve done 100m if it didn’t open against Jedi.
  12. The Greatest Showman. Had an 8M OW Christmas and legged it to 175M domestic. I am lazy and I like acronyms.
  13. If Puss follows Sing, it’ll be at a 13.2M weekend, actually increasing from its OW on the third weekend and a drop of 21.5% from the second with an 87.8M total. Forget Sing or Chipwrecked, it’s having TGS esque legs. If the momentum continues, I can see 150m+.
  14. Wakanda is at 820m now and should end with 830m-840m. A similar fall gives Marvels around 650-700m.
  15. I’m dropping the rights for My Hero Academia.
