Nice mix of cinemas in the top 12, Vue Westfield London ruling once again. Am surprised BFI IMAX was beaten by Cineworld Sheffield although that's a 20 Screen cinema so to be expected.
It was only in jest, I really like The Ninjago short before Storks so I'm hopeful it'll be good. Lego Batman will probably make more money in its OW than what Storks did in its domestic run but I expect Ninjago will do decently.
My only fear is that if the branded properties like Lego and Scooby Doo do better than the original films like Storks and Smallfoot then WB will focus on making less original animated films.
I do think another animation studio like WAG should risk it with summer rather than go for February or September. SPA has The Emojimovie but I don't think that'll do well at all.
Nah, they'd nominate Lego Ninjago...
Blockbusters and mainstream films will always attract people who don't know how to behave but I love the communal experience of seeing a film, I enjoy watching films at home but it's not the same. It's the same with theatre, watching a recorded performance is nothing compared to seeing it in person
It would help if they cast actors who are way more likeable than Adam Sandler.
Wouldn't that apply to comedies in general not just romcoms. Cinema shouldn't just be blockbusters all the time, it should encompass all types of genres.
You can count the number of successful video game to film adaptations with one hand, there has been more successful television to film adaptations in comparison.
I do think romcoms need to make a comeback but apart from The Proposal, nothing has done well apart from OS like Bridget Jones. We need the next generation of comedy writers who could become the new Garry Marshall, Richard Curtis, Nora Ephron etc Nancy Meyers is still active but that's really it.
Direct to DVD/home entertainment releases aren't huge budget fares and usually a studio only has a certain number of releases a year plus by releasing it by home entertainment, they're not paying as much for P&A plus they'll keep more of the revenue.
The Jungle Book was not the best example although it did over perform in the UK, had it not been for Bridget Jones's Baby, it likely would have been top film of the year until Rogue One.
It's always interesting to see how films perform in different countries. Fast and Furious 7 and Warcraft's China performances outgrossing domestic was fun to observe but something like About Time which was a British romcom did more business in South Korea than in the UK!
I assumed the screenings were in Japanese with subtitles. The Odeon website suggests they're showing it in the original language so I wonder if it'll vary from cinema to cinema.
I assume it being the biggest hit in Japan for a while is a good selling point for people hence the increase in screenings. I wouldn't be surprised if we get a dubbed version within 1-2 years like they've done with the Ghibli films.
Who is distributing Your Name? It's great that we are getting an anime film so soon. They usually take over a year to come in dubbed form.
I'm planning on seeing it though not on Thursday,
FB was always going to do great in the UK since its the Potter homeland but big films based on British characters tend to over perform in the UK like Bridget Jones, The BFG, The Jungle Book etc
Fantastic Beasts only has Allied and A United Kingdom as competition, both are aiming at a more adult audience so a 50-55% drop. Apart from Moana, there isn't a big film until Rogue One.
Assuming it's not as front loaded as Potter was, I think a £40m+ Total is doable. That will mean there won't be a superhero film in the top five of the year assuming Rogue One cracks £40-50m
I loved Alison Sudol as Queenie, I wasn't as keen on Tina because she was more uptight.
I think having Jacob as the audience surrogate worked, it was great to see an No-Maj adult introduced to this world.
Wasn't Sully successful in September with almost $125m domestic and likely a $75-80m OS total? The Accountant also did well for what was an average film. We have had mid budget films be successful at the box office just not making blockbuster money but they're not expected to make blockbuster money.
