  1. Uh... I don't think this movie was ever going to block Jumanji. It's TLJ that's letting Jumanji take 1st place.
  2. I dont think people are rushing to make sure they get their tickets early for Insidious: The Last Key. As usual with these kinds of movies, walk-ups will drive it. That being said, I'm going to see this on opening day after work because...why not? I've never been to the theatre to see the first movie that opens the year before. That and I actually wouldn't mind seeing it. I like the series, even if 3 wasn't great.
  3. You don't even get it. What you're saying has nothing to do with this thread. We're talking about the top 5 DOMESTIC opening weekends at any given time. Fantastic Beasts has yet to be relevant in THAT discussion. However, I said if Fantastic Beasts can reach Harry Potter heights, aka that level of box office power (at least on opening weekends) domestically, then WB has a shot at a tip 5 opening weekend again.
  4. Who really cares about the scores? The box office speaks for itself post opening week. Still big numbers, just not great holds, meaning it could be much better.
  5. No it isn't. We're talking about top 5 opening weekends here. When I say Harry Potter heights, I mean like when 2 movies in that franchise broke the opening weekend record. After one movie which opened to around $74M or so, no, it's not at Harry Potter heights.
  6. I think I can sum it up. Some of us just thought the holiday numbers would be stronger than they already are (ie. Christmas Day jump, this past Friday's DROP). We were told that the calendar was such that its first week would be a bit more subdued than expected, but that the holidays would be even better than expected to make up for it. Its behaviour would be entirely unique to this calendar configuration. Except that didn't happen. In fact, it continued to come in below estimates and expectations in some cases (again with the drop on Friday and stuff like that). As a Star Wars fan and a box office junkie, it's just been a bit deflating. That's all.
  7. We're all just not going to see eye to eye on TLJ's box office so I'm going to try not to discuss it anymore beyond my general comments on the daily numbers. I said it in another thread: I think now I'm just anxious to get 2018 started. I'm actually going to see INSIDIOUS: THE LAST KEY next Friday. Yeah, that's how I'm going to ring in the new year of movies: by going to see 2018's first wide release.
  8. Good work you guys! It's fun to read all your predicts. Makes me want to get 2018 going.
  9. I thought a 3x multi was in the bag for TLJ as well. Some advice: don't assume anything. Who knows if audiences will like Avatar 2 or even give a shit.
  10. Can't like this post enough. This is exactly what scares me too. Less and less people appreciate the movie theatre experience and more and more people are content to sit on their couches.
  11. Nobody is saying the total for TLJ is a disappointment, or the drop from TFA. Jesus Christ. It's the drops and jumps after a $220M OW. Don't act like this was going to be the case all along. The audience showed up in huge numbers on its opening weekend and the numbers since show that a lot of people weren't happy. We can all meet in the middle of this discussion. The final numbers for this will be outstanding, obviously, but the legs will be disappointing given its opening weekend and the fact it occupied the plum holiday slot. Let's not just conveniently ignore all that.
  12. It's a good movie but it's not the crowdpleaser that audiences keep coming back for, as evidenced by the numbers after its first weekend and the fact that Jumanji is about to overtake it.
  13. Is it pretty much agiven at this point that Jumanji overtakes TLJ next weekend? Incredible!
  14. I absolutely agree. I genuinely respect @EmpireCity and appreciate his and @The Greatest Rth contributions to this forum. I'm just frustrated by the moving goalposts over the last several days and the lack of respect for those who had a point in the opening week. We caught a ton of flak and now are only catching more because we're not simply appreciating a juggernaut movie. I've said it before: this is a box office forum with some of the smartest box office people around. I don't see why we can't critique and look deeper, instead of just saying "Heyyy this movie is making more than $600M! What a success!". That may be 100% true, but come on now, some of us want to analyze and critique the patterns underneath the surface of the raw numbers. That's what this forum is for. But because people don't like the negative vibe of that, suddenly none of that matters. We're better than that, d i certainly hold folks like EmpireCity to that standard.
  15. More intelligent than standing by the "internet star wars fanboys are sabotaging this movie" theory and mocking those that saw there was an issue during the first week. I mean, you're the expert and you were scoffing at the notion that WOM was mixed. Now look. The movie actually DROPPED on Friday. Dropped. Explain that one away.
  16. I agree with your post in general, but why then did Treverrow get fired? Yes, they knew that Abrams delivered a crowdpleaser but there has to be more to it than that. It had to be a conscious choice to go back to being safe.
  17. They go hand in hand. If word of mouth on TLJ was better, than Jumanji wouldn't be taking business away. Just today we had some friends invite me and another friend to go out to see Jumanji. They haven't even seen the new Star Wars yet, and 99.999% that would be the go to movie. Not in this case.
  18. Yeah this is how I see it. The calendar excuse only worked during its first week, when it was implied that the rest of the holidays would make up for it. Well, it's not really doing that.
  19. Brutal. There's really no excuse for it at this point, no reason why it couldn't have jumped 5% or something. The audience seems to slowly be abandoning it. Anecdotal, but my dad texted me the other day and said something like "Dude, the new Star Wars is HORRIBLE!". A lot of people just don't like it.
