Is it possible for non-American movies to be worldwide blockbusters?
JB33 replied to cannastop's topic in The Speakeasy
One involves just having cable or streaming. The other involves paying lots of money at cinemas. Detective Pikachu this year was a good example of how things that work elsewhere don't necessarily work at the box office. -
I wouldn't hold your breath. You can't chalk up DP's performance 100% to Endgame. By the way, finally watched DP on blu ray the other night. Fun movie! I hope they march forward with the franchise.

Bingo. You summed it up much better than I did. -

Of course it doesn't have to be, but in today's movie landscape audiences are looking for something they know, especially if it's a foreign film. You're asking if a non American movie can be a worldwide hit. I'm saying there's no way that there is anything China or India or whatever is making that could be a worldwide hit. Audiences just wouldn't be interested. You cited an example in one of your earlier posts of a film doing $600M in China, $100M in Japan and $50M in SK. I don't really count that as a worldwide hit. That's an Asian hit. What I thought you were getting at was is there a movie made by a foreign country that could be a hit almost everywhere and I just don't think that's possible because most audiences won't have the slightest interest. Conversely, worldwide audiences do have an interest in North American/British IP's and that's how those gigantic, worldwide hits happen. -

The source material is British though. That's what I personally was getting at. British and North American IP's are the biggest in the world and it's no contest, at least as far as movies are concerned. Several Asian IP's are popular worldwide (ie. Pokemon) but we saw what happened with the movie. Even then it still saw its largest chunk of the worldwide gross come from NA. -

That's why I said North American/English. What I should have said was 'British', not English. -

No, because I think both the English language and North American/English IP's reign supreme. -
BOM lists it as going wide right now. I could see it opening limited on the 20th and then going wide on the 27th but who knows? The show was huge so I could see this making bank. I mean, it was usually huge at the awards. I'm not sure how big the fan following is though and if it can drive a healthy box office gross. I hope it's big though. If IT 2 isn't going to be as big as we thought, we need the couple other September offerings to step up. Right now September is looking like July. Only 7 wide offerings but this time there isn't two big blockbusters. IT 2 won't be as big as either FFH or TLK.

The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread: Electric Boogaloo
JB33 replied to grim22's topic in Numbers and Data
With 9-10M previews and around a 9-10x multi, It Chapter Two is looking like it COULD reach $100M for OW but I'm not betting on it anymore. Definitely bummed. I know how horror sequels work but I figured this was different. This was more of an event than just a sequel to a successful horror movie. -
Haha WOW! That's like the theatre in Alabama or wherever not showing Beauty and the Beast because of the barely suggestive gay La Fou scene.

Awesome post! Thanks!

Not that I'm an SJW by any means, but I will say to all you leftists pouncing on the Joker character and the film that he's not simply a disturbed white guy who feels rejected by society. Mental illness is obviously a huge part of the character. I'm not saying a psycho killer should suddenly be sympathetic, what I'm saying is don't turn this into another crusade against white men. It's tiresome. I would say that whatever the character of Arthur Fleck experiences at first (aka before he goes all homicidal) is VERY real and should be met with a degree of sympathy.

Naomi Osaka is special. Gauff is too, for that matter. Was a great moment!

Awesome! Enjoy IT. Read it a couple years ago after having seen the movie and adored it.

Just picked up the book. I'm curious. Going to try to get it done before the movie releases and then I'll decide if I want to see it or not.

Thinking about all you folks in Florida. It may be a weird thing to say because you can't control something like a hurricane, but stay safe.
