  1. Wonder whether we will get a gender breakdown for this weekend. If women start to even out audience wise, then CM may be in for a very leggy run.
  2. I am not sure I like the idea of that. People were invested in the characters in the first movie and I think there is genuine interest in seeing the arc of that story play out. It’s confusing to have the same characters and not acknowledging their past.
  3. So I just saw CM. I thought it was solid. Maybe a 7/10. Don’t judge me, but I enjoyed it much more than Thor Ragnarok. 😛 I liked the Stan Lee tribute. It was a nice touch. I expected Brie to be really stiff after reading some of the comments on here, but she was actually quite charming and funny in parts. There were some missed opportunities. I thought they could have spent more time developing Jude Law’s character- which goes hand in hand with telling the audience more about the Kree civilization. All in all, it was a good time at the movies. Oh yeah, and Fury’s unrequited love for Goose was funny.
  4. Not that I know what the 2nd weekend drop will be. But I think Napoleon, Nova and Zak’s guesses are all valid. They are all grounded in historical data for the month of March and the history of certain brands (Marvel superhero films tend to drop in the 50-55 range), so why the snark? You are consistently one of the more knowledgeable posters on this board, so I am surprised at your response with no historical data to bolster your point. Anyways, interested to see how weekend plays out as well as the remainder of the week. Good day!
  5. It’s pretty hard to be disappointed with 150-155 million, unless you set yourself up for 180-200 million as the expectation. Anecdotally, just scanning the AMC app in my area, theaters look a lot busier today than they did yesterday. I would say that bodes well for a 30%+ jump from true Friday. I remember during BP’s run, Fridays were often average, but then it would completely blow the doors off on Saturdays. May be the same thing here, as more families go to the movies on Saturdays and Sundays. It sure is fun when big movies hit the market.
  6. Deadline is gonna Deadline but they are using Suicide Squad as the comp. 20.7 is mighty impressive no matter how you slice it. The weekend is going to be impressive. I think we won’t truly know how impressive until estimated. I will say that if WW1984 pulls 20.7 in previews, I will do the happy dance all through the weekend. Great number!
  7. Ah well. Let me give it a wild guess, Baumer! A Star Is Born Black Panther Bohemian Rhapsody
  8. I just realized that I saw a hell of a lot of movies this year. More than I would have thought. By my count, I saw almost 70 movies at the theater in 2018 and by and large enjoyed most of them. My favorites were A Quiet Place and Alpha. My least favorites were Paul- Apostle of Christ and Superfly. I have not put them in order, but put the movies on enjoy v not enjoyed lists. A movie has to be really bad for me not to enjoy it. I usually do not go in with super high expectations. When I do, I am often disappointed. I put asterisks to note higher intensity. Enjoyed: A Quiet Place* Alpha* Proud Mary* The Commuter Black Panther* Death Wish* Red Sparrow Game Night Strangers Ready Player One Acrimony* Blockers Rampage Avengers Traffik Breaking In Overboard Deadpool 2 Solo Book Club* Adrift * Ocean’s 8* Upgrade* Tag Jurassic World Incredibles 2 Hotel Transylvania Antman The Meg Skyscrapper * Crazy Rich Asians* The Equalizer 2 * BlacKKKlansMan Searching* Operation Finale A Simple Favor* A Star Is Born* Hellfest Halloween* Venom The Hate U Give* The Grinch Nobody’s Fool* Creed II Mortal Engines Annihilation Widows Aquaman Spiderverse Second Act* Bumblebee The Mule The Nun Truth or Dare Did Not Enjoy: Paul The Apostle of Christ* Fifty Shades of Grey A Wrinkle In Time I Feel Pretty Superfly * Sicario The Predator Robin Hood Pacific Rim
  9. In addition to many on your list, I also really liked: Ocean’s 8 Peppermint Upgrade Skyscraper I know that you stated that you had not seen The Hate U Give. It is really good. Looking forward to the remainder of your list.
  10. People did over predict MP. Disney had a heck of a year, so maybe it was justified to think that they would end the year with another 400+ domestic grosser. It seems to be doing well now after a disappointing start, but it likely won’t reach those lofty predictions. Good thing Warner was not intimidated by Disney and left Aquaman alone in the 12/21 slot. No matter how things go from this point, (as it’s possible that MP legs out a higher domestic gross than Aquaman), Aquaman was the movie of the season. For many here, that was not the expectation. I guess that’s what makes the box office fun and keeps us all coming back here no matter how irritating it can be.
  11. I wonder whether Aquaman will be over 700 million worldwide by Sunday. Seems like a good possibility. But I don’t have a good gauge of what the overseas projections for the weekend (exception China) are at the moment.
  12. Saw Aquaman. It was good. My opinion is subject to change over time, but I think my DCEU rankings are: 1. Wonder Woman 2. Justice League 3. Aquaman 4. Man of Steel 5. BvS 6. Suicide Squad- The only DCEU movie that I did not enjoy at all. Joker’s relationship with Harley Quinn was abusive, sick and not compelling. I think the DCEU gets a bad rap. They are more often than not better than their scores on RT. Also saw Bumblebee. My son loves the Transformer toys. I was pleasantly surprised. I hope it does okay at the box office this holiday season.
  13. No Dear, DC fans are not being defensive without provocation. As you so aptly pointed out, the opening is good. Thank you for acknowledging that. There are others who are claiming there was “underperformance”, “boring” or that the opening was “not that good”. Just a cursory look at the thread will provide evidence of that. And no, the Venom comparisons are not a straw man. During the week, I lurked as I always do on this site. It can be very informative while simultaneously being exasperating. During the week, some posters were saying that it was going to open at 55-60 million because it was lagging behind Venom. One poster in this thread even shared their disappointment at Aquaman’s opening number because in 2018, it failed to make the splash by far surpassing its tracking like Venom did. So if you’re trying (not saying you are) to make the argument about DC fan hysteria, there is none. The clap back is completely justified.
  14. Spot on... A like was not enough to high five on this post. It is schizophrenic to say the least. Aquaman is now “underperforming”, when most people here would have not believed a 70-75+ opening last month.... LMAO.
  15. Because they love crapping on DC. If it were another film, there would not be the same sentiment. Due to the holiday, Aquaman is on track (albeit not assured) to outgross Ant Man, Dr. Strange Venom and Logan who are very good comps, yet those movies were rightfully seen to have good to great box office performances. Since it’s Aquaman, people are going with “boring weekend”, “not that good”, “overestimated”. Really does give me a good idea of which posters/members I can take seriously in the future and those I won’t.
  16. Now, it seems you are justifying one bad take with another. No where in tracking Aquaman was there a hint that a 65milliok domestic opening during the holiday was “not that good”. It’s tracking was always positive about its box office prospects- not like Mortal Engines. In fact, Deadline predicted that although it would open less than JL, it would eventually pass it because of the holidays. Aquaman is a B superhero. Comparisons to Ant Man and Doctor Strange are more applicable than to Batman and Superman. He is not a household name. I think maybe we got spoiled by Black Panther on this site. If Aquaman does 78 mil OW like Gitesh is predicting, that is a triumph for DC. I don’t see any spinning out of that.
  17. Point taken! However, one should separate their expectations against actual performance. “Not that good” is not accurate for Aquaman’s performance so far. The performance is good by any measure- some would even say very good based on the tracking estimates.
  18. It had the same opening number as Venom and it’s Christmas. I think there’s a little of bias in your posts. You have been touring underperformance by Aquaman all week. The number is fine.
