  2. Because the folks in this thread have put in a lot of hard work over the years, and before COVID they pretty much had their system down to a tee. We're all trying to get this thread back up and running, but it's hard when old comps don't really matter cause we're living in a post-COVID world. So it's going to take a couple months more more precise numbers to show up -- in the mean time, we might see some crazy outliers.
  3. So with the film club has watched at least 15 westerns this month. And we’re about to round out this week with three more: Geronimo: an American legend, tombstone, and the Rider. Geronimo is tonight at 9:30.
  4. Or they’re not concerned because they think it’s just gonna add subscribers to HBO max. Which I still don’t necessarily agree with. I feel like the reason people subscribe to streaming services is for long-term series.
  5. Yahtzee. And to me this is where the HBO Max release is going to be the kiss of death for this film. If people are making assumptions based off the first movie, which will result in them not rushing out to see the second one opening weekend; then, It will be very easy for them to just tune in at home to watch it if there is good word of mouth circulating this weekend from folks have seen it. There’s no real chance for this to leg its way out. At least, that’s my take.
  6. I can’t believe that 88 year old Ridley Scott is going to deliver two camp masterpieces this year. This looks like glorious glorious glorious gay trash. I am so here for this.
  7. I just completed the Romance/Adventure movie trifecta of: The African Queen, Romancing the Stone, and The Mummy (1999). All absolute bangers. 5/5 for all.
  8. TUESDAY Robert Altman's morose anti-Western about two capitalist in 1902 Washington. WEDNESDAY We're taking a SLIGHT pause from the Westerns to prepare for Jungle Cruise by watching the original! SATURDAY The first half of our directed by the star double features this weekend, Buck and the Preacher stars Sidney Poitier and Harry Belafonte. This is the first film Poitier directed. As mentioned in the introduction to the month, the Western genre isn't exactly known for being progressive and inclusive. Buck and The Preacher was one of the first films that really depicted African American settlement in the West post-Civil War, and one of the few to depict the Native and African Americans working together against the White Settlers. Fun Fact and interesting tie in to Sergeant Rutledge. According to Woody Strode: "The big studios wanted an actor like Sidney [Poitier] or [Harry] Belafonte. And this is not being facetious, but Mr. Ford defended me; and I don't know that this is going on. He said, "Well, they're not tough enough to do what I want Sergeant Rutledge to be." SUNDAY Directed and Starring Clint Eastwood, we have another story about a Preacher. This time the "mysterious preacher (Clint Eastwood) protects a humble prospector village from a greedy mining company trying to encroach on their land."
  9. @Porthos I can’t believe you found that when I couldn’t. I am very impressed. Now we need to go check out the South Portland theater to see if there is a flyer on it. TBH, I don’t think that theater needs to re-open. It’s smaller, and And it’s not really in a good location anymore since basically no one goes to the mall. It feels like you could easily strip that theater and sell off the equipment. But the theater in Westbrook, which features the largest non-IMAX screen and largest auditorium in the state, and the Saco theater, which features the IMAX, are prime turnkey businesses.
  10. THE PRODIGAL DAUGHTER IS RETURNING. EXACT DATE TBD 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 Apparently they are an independent chain from Massachusetts. I think they only have like two theaters. So I wonder if they bought the whole franchise, or they just bought this theater. Either way, thank the ever loving God. AND PS. Those poor posters 🥺
  11. I see someone is talking about my boy without tagging me. They’re totally different properties. Despite Captain America’s origins as a World War II veteran, everything written in the 1960’s onward uses that more as backstory than plot. And he has little affiliation with the US government or military in that time. He spends most of his time as an Avenger fighting aliens in the group comics, and in his solo comics he fights Neo-Nazi hate groups. People who aren’t familiar with the property tend to get really caught up in the **name**, and then they tend to impose their real life politician opinions on the character. LAAAAAAAWL, girl. No. SMH. No. Jack Kirby and Joe Simon literally designed the character to fight Nazis. Nothing works better than Steve Rogers punching a WWII Nazis in the face. Plus, The First Avenger is the best MCU Phase 1 movie by a mile; and arguably Top 5 of their whole library.
  12. Bob Evans pointed this out on the **1970s**. People don’t go “to the movies”; they go to see a movie. And I think with GI Joe and MNS, when they have a mixed track record, reviews and WOM matter more than like F9 or the MCU where “I know you think it’s bad, I don’t care.” IDK. I just don’t think this weekend, with these crop of movies, are worth having a meltdown about.
  13. I doubt anything moves. 2022 is already pretty crowded, and the studios have been paying interest on these films for way too long. At some point you just need to dump them. And move on.
  14. I am penciling in some hijinks for next year. Submissions will run between December 2021/January 2022 with the List reveal in February 2022. More later, but it’s gonna be 🥰🥰🥰🥰 @Plain Old Tele
  15. It's been exactly ten years since I first watched Captain America: The First Avenger and Chris Evans' Steve Rogers came into my life. We were at SDCC, and we had to drag ourselves out to Mission Valley. Two of my friends cancelled on me and didn't pay me back. We ended up at the half full overflow theater instead of the big crowed one. But none of it really mattered once the movie started. And he was perfect. Everything I could've hoped and dreamed for. Ten Years Later he's still The GOAT. And omg the fandom journey. All the Comic Cons. All the Thursday previews. All the friends I have met cause of the MCU. It's been a long, long time. I can't imagine life without Kevin. And with it being the second Comic Con I've missed, and now going on 28 months without seeing the crew, I won't lie. This week has kind of sucked. I feel like I'm never gonna experience Hall H Saturday again. Maybe next year. In the meantime, time for:
