  1. Vaughn's abstract zany humor needs an anchor, and he lost that anchor several years ago. Someone needs to reel the boat back in for him.
  2. I'm not surprised at how fun this looks. Ritchie has gotten the best film performance from Cavill in The Man from UNCLE. It appears the two operate on the same frequency. As much as I know I'm going to enjoy this, it'll probably end up a mild box office disappointment similar to TMfU. Bonus: Alan Ritchson starring in a WW2 film gets us a step closer to Wolfenstein.
  3. This looks like it has potential to be a big sleeper hit. These type of visually kinetic arthouse action films tend to build momentum through the smaller venues first. Major respect for Dev Patel going all out like this on his directorial debut.
  4. I'm getting The King's Man vibes from the pre-release marketing thus far. There's an aggressive marketing push here in the US. Vaughn is a more than capable director for this type of material, but it seems like he's gotten too comfortable with it. His last few films aren't BAD bad. They just tend to feel flat and forgettable despite how bonkers some of the scenes are. There's an element missing from the craziness.
  5. The premise reminds me of a Spanish film called "The Uninvited Guest"(El Habitante Incierto). I'm curious to see how Soderbergh handles this with his lo tech experimental techniques. I don't think he's ever done a thriller that skirts the edges of the horror genre like this. It might prove successful if they market it right.
  6. What are the chances of this film being a sleeper hit in the US while being released alongside Aquaman? The odds are small, but a man can dream.
  7. As a huge fan of his Hostel films, I'm glad he has returned to the tongue in cheek slasher genre with not so subtle social commentary. Yes, Americans are allowed to poke fun at Europeans.
  8. It's strange to say this, but Marvel's outcast might be its only savior. The weight of the MCU now rests upon the shoulders of the Deadpool 3 trailer. 3 years of middling disappointments have all led to that trailer being the only hope for its future. Can Shawn Levy pull off a Favreau Hail Mary? They may as well do a couple of reshoots of Deadpool tearing the current phase of MCU apart.
  9. The perennial cult film Nicolas Cage stars in every other year or two. I mean that in a good way. We need more of these. Absurdist cinema. Nic Cage not tethered to contractual obligations. An auteur let loose.
  10. This series is all about cashing in. Fair game to them. If Transformers can have X amount of sequels directed by Michael Bay, why can't FNAF have the same? These games are S tier level guilty pleasures. Pokemon can be lumped in the same boat. This is not great storytelling. The substance is shallow. But it has fans. Somehow. Some way. I can say the same thing for Mario Bros. or Sonic (which I'm a fan of).
  11. 29 on Metacritic now. I do believe this film will be critic proof for the first week. There's no way the game series would've made it this long with such cheap presentation if people were picky about presentation and substance. The whole thing feels more like a big inside joke than appreciating the art form of gaming. There's something like "PT", and then there's "FNAF". I guess the lore and subreddit rabbit holes is what elevated the series to what it is today.
  12. How many people do you know are saying "I can't wait to watch this on Apple."? My 60+ year old father is a huge Scorsese fan. The prime age for it. He didn't even know about this Apple deal. I'm pretty sure Scorsese knows his demographic, and knows they'll show up when given the correct option.
  13. Trailer looks great. I'm really surprised at how good this looks. This might turn out to be Zac's first critical and box office success since High School Musical.
  14. OK. Statham comparison was a bit of a stretch, but I'm talking about recent foreign box office numbers. I'm going with at least 150M (AT LEAST) here in the US. 200M at most overseas.
  15. He is internationally recognized, but I wouldn't place him in the same breath as someone like Tom Cruise or even Jason Statham. That's no offense to Leo either. He's a movie star who exists in his own realm these days, and doesn't always choose projects that are fit for mass consumption. I don't see this breaking out overseas. I think it will do better than most predictions assume in the US. At least 150M domestically.
  16. It doesn't have much competition in October. It's Leo and Scorsese. Their most divisive film, Shutter Island, performed well in the US. The subject matter will definitely draw attention domestically. I think the prediction of 100M is kinda low despite the running time. I don't know how it will play overseas, though.
  17. Tokyo Vice Season 2 being released not too soon after this film is just the feather in the cap. Michael Mann slowly returning to form. Ferrari looks better than I had imagined. It looks like more classical Mann. Less obvious digital photography, and Adam appears to be in fine form. This fall/winter season is packed with insane talent.
  18. All is not lost this year. We have Scorsese in October. Fincher and Scott in November. Mann in December. It's still an impressive year for adult cinema despite Oppenheimer being the clear front runner right now. March is a little strange of a window for a release date of a series of this esteem, but I suppose they have their reasons.
  19. I wish this subject would get a more full spectrum approach similar to Soderbergh's Traffic. It's unfortunate that it has been solely relegated to hero worship thrillers. I'm not saying there's not a place for those films like Sound of Freedom, and they can be good entertainment. I wouldn't consider them any further than that, though.
  20. I think there are plenty of women out there who can identify with both Pugh's and Blunt's character in equal measure despite the limited screen time. It's sort of a horror film for them in a different way. There's that scene where Oppenheimer is being cross examined by multiple government/judicial agencies. You could almost feel every couple in the theater feel uncomfortable. That's the mark of a hard truth being presented onscreen.
  21. "The body and the blood." scene looks awful. I hope that's just a poorly edited version. Again, you can't always judge a film based on its trailer, but this trailer is pretty bad.
  22. My friend told me people were audibly laughing at the trailer in the theater. It could be a bad trailer to a good film, but it doesn't bode well based on the history of Exorcist sequels (3 being the only serviceable one).
  23. I still stand by that the only major moment of that chapter was Oppenheimer's moral compass involving the apple. Of course, it has incredible surreal space imagery and sound design. It just feels like not much is informed on the character beyond that.
  24. From a technical standpoint, the first chapter was a poetic fusion of sound and imagery similar to Malick. However, it still feels slightly disconnected from the overall narrative. I have to revisit it, because it seemed like Nolan was just flexing his technical prowess.
