  1. Ridley Scott movies have had director’s cuts for decades. That’s not a recent thing. Director’s cuts used to be commonplace in Hollywood before the Internet suddenly decided they were bad.
  2. By the way, am I the only one who thinks this movie getting rave reviews would’ve been more concerning than it being polarizing? The former would’ve suggested to me that Phillips chose to play it safe.
  3. I always assumed a drop was a pretty likely possibility. The first movie had the novelty factor behind it (and since this apparently needs to be stressed, I specifically mean it was a novelty as far as movies based on superhero comics are concerned) and had an unprecedented cultural movement behind it. The media wouldn’t shut up about how “dangerous” the movie was, which I think got a number of people curious to see what the fuss was about. Of course, this film isn’t out for another month, so it’s obviously too early to make judgements about how it’ll perform compared to its predecessor.
  4. I see you conveniently ignored the part where I specifically said “by the standards of a CBM”. You do know what ‘CBM’ stands for, right?
  5. TDK also borrowed heavily from Heat. This stuff if nothing new. Films homage other films all the time. Ironically, Matt Reeves cited Taxi Driver as an inspiration as well.
  6. I can imagine that Phillips and Phoenix did this for the easy paycheck, and not so much because they felt there was an interesting story to tell. Say what you will about the first Joker movie, but it did something different by the standards of a CBM, and I've always felt that giving it a sequel would cheapen it. They should’ve let the original stand on its own.
  7. The Netflix cartoon gave Rouge a more modest outfit and basically made her bust invisible, so it’s not like there hasn’t been precedent for it. I wouldn’t necessarily be surprised if these movies don’t bother with Rouge altogether, though. If she’s not in the movie that’s adapting Sonic Adventure 2, I’m not sure where else they could introduce her.
  8. I don’t know about China, but I do recall that the first movie did surprisingly well in Japan, and I believe Lady Gaga is pretty popular over there.
  9. Is China becoming more accepting of R-rated movies now? At least the ones that don’t have any icky sex and nudity?
  10. It seems Tim Burton’s style in general still resonates with a lot of people, especially now that he’s found a new talent in Jenna Ortega. I believe I’ve said before that I never really cared for his work, or his whole “misunderstood weirdo” shtick, but there’s clearly an audience for it.
  11. Well, I guess that’s one way of avoiding a repeat of the Indy 5 fiasco.
  12. By my math, the Tomatometer score is at 76% right now. Not sure what the point is in hiding it. I seriously doubt that’s going to hurt this movie’s apparent momentum.
  13. I don’t know about that. Multiverse of Madness and Quantumania had strong openings but poor legs.
  14. Kinda weird to think that apart from Longclaw in the first movie, there haven’t been any female animal characters in any of these. Maybe Amy will be in the credits scene or something.
  15. How come the Tomatometer score isn’t visible yet? Is this a new thing?
  16. This movie’s legs seem fairy typical compared for a $200 million opener. I know that’s not exactly a large sample size, but they don’t seem that insane to me.
  17. A nostalgia bait Beetlejuice movie doing great in 2024 sounds a little disheartening to me, especially after Deadpool, and to a lesser extent, the new Alien, did as well as they did. I guess nostalgia is here to stay.
  18. Coppola’s quote isn’t quite as bad as the headline makes it sound, but I think we should ban creatives from using words like “woke” or “canceled” at this point.
