Before I thought this could have a Greatest Showman like performance, but after that trailer, ehhhhhh I'm not feeling it. Beyond the designs of the cats, the trailer basically told us nothing about the story other than "a better life" at the end, and focused more on the cast, which as we've seen in recent years doesn't mean a large box office take. I'm going for a $20 mil opening, 60-70 mil domestic and a 170-200 mil worldwide gross. But I've been wrong on a lot of stuff lately so what do I know?

Given that Vice's release strategy did not work (whoever thought it was a good idea to open it in wide release was an idiot), I think the fact they're going for something similar is gonna hurt this. Even if it's going for a counter programming strategy against the big films in December (Star Wars and Jumanji), I think Cats and Little Women are gonna get way more attention. They should really just make this date a limited release and then go wide in January.

I worry that this is gonna be another Bad Times At The El Royale. Great film, but its released is sandwiched between two highly anticipated films, John Wick 3 and Godzilla. Add on Aladdin and BrightBurn the same weekend, and I honestly see this just barely making back its $50 million budget. I'd maybe delay it to September/October to a less competitive time and to get some awards attention. Maybe some IMAX screens too.

I'm late, I know, but did I miss something in Fast 8, because I'm pretty sure these two guys set their differences aside by the end. Now they hate each other again? Oh yeah and there's superhumans now too I guess. Predicting this will be the Solo of the F&F series, though not that low. But under films like Fast 6.

I can't find anything on Collider. But places like Slashfilm were also critical of how Disney handled the situation, so it seems like even the "blogger" community had a bit of their own backlash too. Not to the extent of never mentioning those brands, or not attending press screenings, FWIW. But still, I have a hard time believing Kyle Newman. If so many critics were (rightly) criticizing Disney with how they dealt with the LA Times, I don't know why they'd then fear losing access to set visits and interviews when it comes to giving TLJ or Infinity War or any other Disney film a good review or not. That's all I got to say on this topic really.

It's weird how all the "Critics are pressured/paid into giving good reviews" folks seem to forget about how the critic community responded to the Disney/LA Times controversy last year. They SLAMMED Disney for how they revoked the Times' press credentials, and several of them (like the New York Times and The A.V. Club) were boycotting press screenings until Disney went back on their decision. But I guess that doesn't matter now. That's also ignoring all the films Disney have released that have gotten either mediocre to bad reviews. Even Solo got pretty "eh" reactions from critics, and you would think with all the production issues and cash that went into it, Disney would (if they actually did it) try to get critics to like it more than any of their prior SW films.

FB: CRIMES OF GRINDELWALD: WHAT WENT WRONG?
TheManFromBeyond replied to Noctis's topic in Box Office Discussion
First FB did fine box office, critically and fan reception wise. So it wasn't the problem. The problems were simple: Movie didn't look interesting, trailers showed nothing to get you excited beyond "WHOA DUMBLEDORE". Then the film itself wasn't really good, audiences didn't want to go back. Then more films like Ralph Breaks The Internet and Creed II came out that got better responses from audiences, and, well that's that. If FB3 could get some good marketing and get a good response from audiences and critics, then this series could have more life in it. -
That's PG-13, and I think it's safe to say this will be a pretty medium to hard R. Plus I think Holmes & Watson is going after a different audience than OUATIH. Now given this film's large budget and cast, I can see Sony trying to push this as an event type film and give it a bigger marketing push than Tarantino's last movies. So I'd wager late January-early/mid February on a trailer launch.
