The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread (December 2021 - July 2023)
JustWatching replied to Cap's topic in Numbers and Data
FWIW my local Cinemark here in the boring Midwest had 12 Spiderverse shows listed this morning…and the final three have been cancelled, so nine total today with the last show at 8:40. -

Yeah by about 500k -
Vol. 2 dropped 53% against Wonder Woman’s opening in the same frame in 2017. Spiderverse will probably open bigger, so I’d consider anything under 60% a success.

It made more on Monday, so chances are good.

Yeah, schools are getting out earlier now that distances learning has replaced snow days. Local schools around me are all out by Thursday, with some done tomorrow, some today and some already gone.

Yeah Fast X showings started at 2 at my local cinemark. Can’t say how well attended the first three shows were, but the seven remaining have sold a whopping 19 tix. -

So it missed beating Vol 2’s first Thursday by…$102. That’s like 10 tickets. Crazy. -
Bummer it isn’t doing well. I thought it was fantastic and what audience there was (about 20) at my screening this afternoon all seemed got enjoy it. Lots of laugh out loud moments and everyone stayed for the after credits stuff. My only complaint is that it seemed a bit too long, but all these CMBs seems too long these days and at least this one had the excuse of having to work in both an adult and child cast as the heroes. 9/10 in my book but sadly I’m just one ticket.

Not bad.

I have not seen Spring Breakers, but Hereditary, TGN, The Witch and Northman all have some commonalities that IMHO help explain why they get a lot of active dislike (aka hate) from the GA. For one, none of these films have a happy ending. It’s a lot easier for an audience to like a film if it ends with the good guy beating the bad guy, getting the girl, etc., and everyone lives happily ever after. Most viewers want the hero to win, and when that doesn’t happen some people react poorly. In similar vein, people want to like the characters they’re watching, and none of these films have much in the way of likeable characters. That doesn’t mean they’re bad or uninteresting characters, but without a rooting interest a lot of peoples’ attention seems to wander, so they’re bored, couldn’t follow it, etc. Finally, and this is more general, movies like the Northman can require a certain amount of effort on the part of the viewer. I guarantee you when The Northman comes to streaming I’ll be watching it with subtitles on because I’m only catching every other word due to the accents unless I’m really trying. A lot of people, myself included at times, just want to sit down, turn their brain off, eat popcorn and watch a movie. Just my $0.02.
-
FWIW I also saw The Northman is a surprisingly crowded theater today and the most negative thing I heard from the crowd walking out was one guy who said, I don’t know whether I liked it or not. An older couple passed me while I stopped to wait for my daughter to use the restroom, the woman saying that she thought it was a really good movie and her husband (I assume) replying that he thought it was great. So maybe you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

I absolutely loved it. Beautiful, bloody, unrelenting and unafraid to lean into magic and mysticism. Special shout-out to Nicole Kidman for a fantastic performance. My showing was a pretty well attended matinee (40-50 people) and the crowd seemed to like it, based on the chatter I heard afterward. 10/10 from me.
