  1. Demon Slayer : 52 000 admissions, on par with Broly.
  2. Top 5 of the day : 1-Adieu les cons (63 000 admissions, +5% its first OD) 2-Demon Slayer 3-Tom & Jerry 4-Mandibules 5-Envole-moi I have no idea...anime films usually get a limited release and few figures are reported so there aren't many comps to look at, but it ranked second so it probably did well.
  3. Full Paris 2pm numbers : 1. Adieu Les Cons : 2 494 admissions (31 screens) 2. Demon Slayer : 2 493 (16) 3. Mandibles : 2 320 (20) 4. DNA : 1526 (28) 5. Drunk : 1 155 (29) 6. Tom and Jerry : 1003 (21) 7. Slalom : 907 (15) 8. Envole-moi : 871 (19) 9. Falling : 812 (16) 10. Garçon Chiffon : 705 (16) Envole-moi sold 20 054 admissions on its full OD. Those numbers are really great, even though they might be inflated by cinephiles rushing to theaters after months of closure. Adieu Les Cons had more or less the same Paris 2pm when it was first released in October and went on to sell 600k+ admissions that week. Demon Slayer is 3.5x Broly (310k + 90k previews OW) at the same point, although Broly was weak in Paris and stronger in Périphérie, which is not counted here. Next Monday will boost admissions since it's a holiday.
  4. Postponed to June 23...but capacity will be up to 65% by then. More than 400 films are ready to be released, it's going to be a bloodbath. Conjuring 3, Nomadland, Le Discours, 5ème Set, Un Tour Chez Ma Fille, Les 2 Alfred, Wrath of Man, La Nuée, A Quiet Place 2, Cruella, Minari, Freaky and Gagarine are all releasing within a three week span. Anticipation for Demon Slayer seems huge, the theater count is kinda low but it will increase since Pathé/Gaumont, UGC and MK2 (the biggest chains in the country) announced that they will screen the film. 400k admissions would only make it the 30th biggest Japanese film here, I hope it can make more.
  5. It was supposed to be released in november but SND delayed it indefinitely after the curfew announcement...no news of it since. The few images that were shown at Congrès des Exploitants to theaters owners and distributors were not very well received...and there's been no new piece of marketing since the first teaser a year ago. It has a pretty high budget, and they want to make a trilogy so they're probably waiting for the best conditions of release possible I guess.
  6. As LPLC said, the reopening was just postponed to January at the earliest. The industry expressed its anger especially since the announcement came with such short notice (many distributors with films slated for next week and the following one already had launched expensive marketing campaigns). Notable titles that were supposed to be released in December : Wonder Woman 1984, Bac Nord, Le Discours, Mandibules, Slalom, Falling, Wolfwalkers and the ones that came out in October since french law doesn't allow them to go to VOD. Box Office Pro counted 47 new releases until the end of the year. Most of the high profile local films (Comment je suis devenu super héros, Aline, Les Tuche (despite that being a christmas special)) had moved to 2021. 64.9 million admissions were sold in 2020 (-69%). Tenet was the top film of the year with 2 348 893 admissions sold, followed by 1917 (2 203 337), Bad Boys 3 (1 726 212), Ducobu 3 (1 497 326), Dolittle (1 293 055), The Call of The Wild (1 258 014) and 10 Jours Sans Maman (1 177 479). This rankings will fluctuate when the october titles are rereleased (Adieu Les Cons, Trolls 2, 30 Jours Max and Poly should make it) and with the CNC (official french instance)'s yearly rankings.
  7. It's getting a release in France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Finland and Iceland. Wakanim described it as "their biggest theater release ever" and said more info and a release date would be given "very soon".
  8. Big asterisk on this one, but Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis (2008) did technically beat Les Bronzés 3's previous record (3.906 million admissions) in week 2 (4,4 million) (27/02-04/03) and 3 (3,94 million) although week 1 (20/02-27/02) was a pre-release in parts of the country (550k admissions). Week 4 wasn't that far off with 3.7 million admissions.
  9. As expected, all theaters in the country will have to close starting tomorrow at midnight. Just as the box office was starting to get back to normal... The new lockdown is supposed to last at least until Dec.1 7 day week (21/10-28/10) top 20 1. Not much to add since the 5 day numbers. Adieu Les Cons is still doing great and it would have become the biggest french film of the year without the lockdown. 30 Jours Max passed the 1 million admissions milestone and Trolls will probably have enough time to pass it too. DNA, which was released today, just posted the third best start of the year in Paris at 2pm and the best one for a french film all year but it will only have 2 days in release before the theaters shut down again. All of the november films will move, which will probably create a chain effect. Notable titles included The Jokers' drama/horror The Swarm, which had received raves from both critics and early audiences (it was sold to Netflix in the rest of the world minus Spain), Gaumont's Céline Dion biopic Aline, which could've become a WOM breakout (would've been Tenet's first contender for the 2020 french crown), Memento's new Quentin Dupieux flick Mandibules and StudioCanal's police thriller Bac Nord (on the same release date as Les Misérables last year) and many others... Les Tuche 4, which seemed poised to win 2020, just moved from Dec. 9 to Dec. 16, on Comment Je Suis Devenu Super Héros (a local big budget superhero film)'s current release date. We'll see what happens when the covid situation allows it.

Adieu Les Cons (Bye Bye Morons), a french dramedy, had the best opening for a french film of the year, on its way to around 600k OWeek. It's currently performing 13% ahead of Au Revoir La-Haut, the director's previous film, which was released on the same week. It's skewing old so the end of the school break won't matter too much. If theaters aren't shut down (which is anything but certain), it should end up with around 2M, helped by great WOM. All the films targeting younger audiences, namely 30 Jours Max (teens) but primarily the kids' ones are posting impressive increases (+118% for Chien Pourri, + 117 for Bigfoot, +96% for Trolls) because of the school break. Trolls (336k, going for 450k week) and 30 Jours (380k, 515k week) are recovering but neither will match their predecessors (2.8M for Trolls, 2.5M for 30JM). That's also a strong opening for Poly but its internal multi is a bit disapointting. It will nevertheless easily cross the 1M admissions mark. Weak for Miss but WB changed the release date 3 days before so some of the audience probably doesn't even know that it released (the advertising material still says oct. 28). Peninsula's opening is a decent one and very close to Train to Busan. Without the terrible WOM and it being available on streaming sites since the korean VOD release it problably could have done much better. Good opening for Il Peccato from independent distributor UFO. Druk posted a strong second week hold and will pass The Guilty sometime next week or the following one (speaking of which, I can't believe Festen did 650k admissions). 1M is definetly dead for Antoinette dans les Cévennes but it's still a phenomenal performance for an indie rom-com between a teacher and a donkey.

Around 450k admissions were sold across the board. Poly and Adieu Les Cons, despite posting the best ODs since the reopening (after Tenet) were only ranked 3rd and 4th, behind Trolls and 30 Jours Max which should see a nice hold this week. 12. Really unprecedented week ahead. Until late this Sunday, no one knew for sure what films would be released and what films would not. ARP Selection initially delayed Peninsula to December but then moved it back to this week, "in solidarity with the whole profession". WB moved Miss up a week while Gaumont confirmed at the last minute that Adieu Les Cons would not be delayed. Some November releases such as Kaamelott and L'origine du Monde were delayed indefinitely. This week, Adieu Les Cons (a French comedy drama) and Poly (kids horse movie) are opening on more than 600 prints, Petit Vampire (cartoon) and Peninsula on 400+ and Miss on 300+. Adieu Les Cons, which arrives with excellent reviews and great WOM from previews, posted a 61k OD + 51k previews which is the second best OD since the reopening and slightly more than the director's last film (Au Revoir Là Haut) which finished with over 2M admissions. This week will be the strongest one since the reopening, with great holds expected and strong openings from everything. With some luck, we might hit 3M admissions this week which would be a normal week pre-corona.

With the help of the vacations, it will easily surpass 1.5 million admissions. Trolls : World Tour underperformed but still had a decent OW even though it's half of what the first Trolls did. Fine opening for Honest Thief and a great one for Drunk with both 115k. WOM is excellent for Drunk. Also OK opening for Calamity. With the school break and its good WOM it should become a small success. Holds are so-so considering that this week had 2 days of school break, probably hurt by the curfew and the new competition. 1M is still possible for Antoinette but not as likely. For the first time since the reopening, 4 major openers dominated the week. 2 million admissions were sold this week, +79% over last week.

FNCF (theater union) is lobbying hard so that there can be an exemption for moviegoers coming back from 7pm showings ending at 9pm. There will be a clear effect on box office prospects as 30-40 % admissions are sold after 7pm. Honestly disappointing ODs. Both Trolls and 30 Jours Max had extensive previews which are inflating their official opening days. Under normal circumstances, Trolls should take the lead this week with around 420k admissions, followed by 30 Jours with 330k, both much lower than what was expected. Great however for Druk (Drunk here and Another Round elsewhere), which would have opened with around 115k admissions without the new restrictions. WOM is excellent and it has a chance to become the biggest Danish film in France since 2011’s Melancholia.

There’s not much to be said : openings are pretty muted although Relic did decently. Outside the top 10, L’Enfant Rêvé opened with 30k admissions, Lupin III : The First with 26k and Yalda with 23k. Tenet is losing some speed, Mon Cousin’s hold is terrible even though its opening week was inflated with previews. Josep delivered a truly impressive second week hold : -19 % counting previews last week/ -11 % without and Un Pays Qui Se Tient Sage (The Monopoly of Violence) added 27k (-11%) admissions in week two. 1.1 million admissions were sold this week (-15%).

September as a whole was down 51%. 56.2 million admissions were sold in 2020, compared to 150.6 at the same point in 2019. Vertigo Research projects 96.5M admissions in total by the end of the year and a 50% share of the market for french films. Tenet finally loses its top spot to newcomer Mon Cousin. It surpassed the 2M admissions milestone and should top the 2020 rankings next week (1917 is currently first). 2.5M should be doable, which would put it in the vicinity of Interstellar (2,6M) and Dunkirk (2.5M). Antoinette dans les Cévennes, an independant comedy (received the Cannes 2020 label) which opened three weeks ago, obviously has excellent WOM and is showing very good legs (it had an increase last week !). 800k is extremely likely and if it doesn't suffer too much from the upcoming competition, it might even be able to surpass the 1M admissions mark. Had it been released in normal times, it's unlikely that it would have been as successful. Josep, a french-spanish-belgian animated movie about Josep Bartoli (also Cannes 2020) had a very good opening despite only 200 screens. WOM is excellent. The real standout this week is Un pays qui se tient sage, a documentary about police violence during demonstrations, which made the top 10 with the best PTA of the week. Outside the top 10, Les Blagues de Toto should cross the 1 million admissions mark soon, Every Day a Good Day is on track for 120k admissions and Gaspard Noe's latest, Lux Aeterna sold 26k admissions in two weeks. Notable openers next week (everything looks very weak) : The War with Grandpa, Parents d'élèves, Lupin III : The First, L'enfant rêvé. The october and november releases seem more promising : Trolls World Tour and 30 jours max (the filmmakers' last movie sold 1.6 million admissions and the 3 previous ones all surpassed 2.4 M) ( both are opening Oct. 14) should probably be aiming for at least 1.5 admissions. Peninsula, Poly and Adieu les cons are also opening on Oct. 22. Gaumont moved their Céline Dion false biopic Aline to Nov. 11 following NTTD's delay. It has the biggest budget of the year for a french film and early audience reactions seem great. Kaamelott Premier Volume, probably the most anticipated movie of the year opens on Nov. 25 (if it doesn't move again). Not to mention Les Tuche 4 (previous one did 5.7M in 2018) opening in early december.
  18. Effacer l'historique (Delete History) : 50 027 adm (inc. 17 977 in previews). Higher than directors' previous film I feel good (30 773 with un unknown share of previews). Should easily clear 200k OW. Dans un jardin qu'on dirait éternel (Everyday a good day) : 14 226 (10k previews) Spycies : 8539 (2k previews) Petit Pays, an adaptation of a french best-seller about the Tutsi genocide comes out today. It's a bit of a wild card, but it could surprise. It would be very good but then again the only number we have right now is the 9 AM Les Halles so this is all very speculative. October and november are stacked (if everything isn't delayed) but september looks depressingly empty...
  19. Came in expecting a dumpster fire and was pleasantly surprised. It's pretty bad and soppy but there are some interesting ideas. The group has some chimestry despite most of the performances being mediocre. Visual effects look like they were made 20 years ago. There is a text at the end of the credits which highlights the number of hours spent on making and distributing the film and the thousands of jobs supported.
  20. 1750 would be very disappointing. Dunkirk (925k OWeek) did 3145 and Interstellar (1,07M) was 3524. Tenet is probably somewhere between them.
  21. It's good but not exceptional. It's much lower than Interstellar, Inception and The Dark Knight (they're at 4.4-4.5) which all had crazy WOM. Most social media reactions (generally positive) seem to say that the movie is mind-blowing and that Nolan is too intelligent for us, jokes about a second viewing being necessary or that it's too stereotyped and overly confusing (a minority).
  22. Paris Intra-muros 2 PM EFFACER L'HISTORIQUE : 1186 THE NEW MUTANTS : 520 DANS UN JARDIN QU'ON DIRAIT ETERNEL : 313 CITOYENS DU MONDE : 172 SPYCIES : 122 IRREVERSIBLE (rerelease) : 54 POMPEII : 52 A bit of a letdown from the 9 AM. Abysmal for New Mutants. Not even one fourth of what Dark Phoenix did. 3.5/5 rating on Allociné with less than 80 ratings on Allociné. Ok number for Effacer l'historique, but looks like it will be more Paris-loaded than expected.
  23. Les Halles 9am (26/08/20) TENET : 151 EFFACER L’HISTORIQUE : 53 NEW MUTANTS : 52 DANS UN JARDIN QU’ON DIRAIT ÉTERNEL : 21 Really good number for Tenet, despite the demand burn from two days of previews, which indicates a very positive trend. In comparison, Dunkirk and Interstellar sold respectively 153 and 123 admissions. It currently has a 4.1/5 audience rating on Allociné. Mediocre for Mutants. Shazam and Birds of Prey did similar scores. Good for Effacer l'historique. Overall the 9 AM gives an encouraging trend. It's still very early but let's hope that Tenet can lead the week with around 1M admissions (7 day, Inc previews). Effacer l'historique and New Mutants should battle for second place in the 300k-350k range.
  24. Tenet held nationwide previews yesterday, but it doesn't appear in the daily Comscore rankings. WB is refusing to release any figure, and it's very unlikely that we get a Paris 14h or even an OD tomorrow. Shows looked relatively full and #Tenet topped the french Twitter trends after the screenings ended so it's safe to assume that the number would have been good. Early audience reactions look generally positive (6.8/10 on Senscritique) even though the film is perceived by some as very divisive, overly confusing and pretentious. Another round of previews tonight. Effacer l'Historique has already totalled arond 15k admissions in previews.
