  1. He wouldn't beat Gosling but I def think RDJ will get a nomination. He is going to campaign and it's a reminder of how great an actor he truly is. It'll probably be his most acclaimed performance since Tropic Thunder and it's another "welcome back nom"
  2. I've seen it. I like it, it's a solid thriller.. just not very passionate about it? I think TDK is a top 2 superhero film, Inception is awesome and Prestige is beyond great.
  3. I haven't loved a Nolan film since Inception--haven't liked one since TDKR. Hoping this really delivers. It seems as if he's been gravitating towards more abstract filmmaking and hiring Hoyte has certainly improved his visual sensibilities and compositions--maybe this will be the peak Ranking is hard because I have a clear top-tier: 1. Dark Knight 2. Inception 3. The Prestige 4. Memento It's a free for all after that... I think I'd go.. 5. Following- very clever and economic first feature 6. Tenet- in many regards a disaster, but the highway sequence is as good as anything he's ever done 7. Begins- maybe this should be higher. It's enjoyable and has a strong perspective-- but it's clunky, exposition driven and the filmmaking feels lethargic and choppy 8. TDKR- the best/worst of Nolan on display. Equally overlong/undercooked 9. Interstellar- ehhh 10. Dunkirk- his greatest visual accomplishment, otherwise...
  4. Could Oppenheimer actually pass Inception to become Nolan's biggest non Dark Knight opener? It seems poised to pass Dunkirk's 50.5m opening and Inception stands at 62.7m, so it'll be close. I assume the lack of additional PLF capacity is what would hinder it since the demand for IMAX would halt walk-ups?
  5. Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part 1 7/11 2:00PM IMAX 90% full Trailers: Drive Away Dolls The Meg 2 The Creator Oppenheimer Dune 2 Napoleon Flower Moon Laughter and applause during the bike scene
  6. I don't care if they lasted over 21 minutes... it was nice being in an IMAX theater for Mission Impossible and getting trailers that looked good. I don't even like the Napoleon trailer but it was a breath of fresh air compared to drivel like Marvels or Blue Beetle trailers.

  8. I liked this one. Idk if it has the same consistent peaks as Fallout or Ghost Protocol and I despise the Part One trend... but it might be the funniest and probably most well-shot since the DePalma.

  10. The formal review embargo is set for July 18 following critics screenings (Deadline’s Valerie Complex will be reviewing), but the social media embargo lifted at the conclusion of last night’s screening and initial reactions are rampant. For my money this is a razor-sharp, hilarious and totally fun movie that more than lives up to my hopes based on the fact the script comes from Noah Baumbach and Greta Gerwig, the latter also the director. It delivers on every front, but gets gravitas from its sly satirical commentary on society’s ever-changing and challenging place of men vs. women. A feminist manifesto? Not quite. It has more complexity than you might think, and nothing is held back. Props also have to go to Mattel for letting these supremely talented filmmakers go wild with the beloved brand, even in unflattering ways. “What a smart movie this was, so fun but with so much to say, too,” one filmgoer told me as she exited the Shrine last night to head to the after-party. That person happened to be Janet Yang, president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and her effusive reaction (just one of many similar I heard afterwards) led me to think, despite its genre and July release, that Barbie could have some real potential come Oscar time, even as Warners tees up other more obvious hopefuls in the fall like Dune Part Two and the film adaptation of the Broadway musical version of The Color Purple. Comedy, or actually more broad comedy like Barbie, usually gets treated like a second-class citizen at the Academy Awards with some exceptions — like Tootsie, which made it into the Best Picture race; Tom Jones, which won; Some Like It Hot, which got a few nominations; more recently Adam McKay films like Don’t Look Up; and movies like The Producers, Pillow Talk, Moonstruck and others over the years that took home screenplay Oscars in their time. Broad comedy master Mel Brooks is getting an honorary Oscar in November, so that’s high acknowledgement of the genre. Even this year the Academy showed by anointing Everything Everywhere All at Once with its highest honor that it is willing to look more out of the box, something Barbie would be literally and figuratively. Because this is a movie that sneaks up on you and has more of an acidly witty Billy Wilder sensibility to it, I could see it playing surprisingly well with the Academy. It is as relevant as it is LOL funny. For starters in crafts categories like Sarah Greenwood’s bright Production Design, Jacqueline Durran’s Costume Design, and Rodrigo Prieto’s candy technicolored cinematography, it could be a real player. Original songs like Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For?” and the rollicking Ryan Gosling-led production number “I’m Just Ken” could compete for Best Song. Both Gosling and title star Margot Robbie deserve consideration in the lead categories for pitch perfect performances that also have a real shot to gain momentum at the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards. Gosling in particular is real scene stealer. Baumbach and Gerwig’s script could have a lot of support for Original Screenplay. Whether Barbie gets into Picture and Director races remains to be seen, but if the movie becomes a bit of a phenomenon following its opening than don’t count it out. https://deadline.com/2023/07/can-barbie-bring-comedy-back-to-oscars-1235433405/
  11. Just like a Top Gun sequel? More genre movies have been receiving BP recognition as of late (Dune, Joker, Black Panther, Get Out, Everything Everywhere All At Once). A Spiderman cartoon is being hyped up as a possible nominee. And at the PGA (Oscar's biggest precursor) movies like Deadpool have been nominated
  12. The year looks very strong for populist and/or genre studio films--Barbie, Dune 2, Oppenheimer, Color Purple to name a few. not only that, Spiderverse will have animation bias + cliffhanger bias. I also think the Miyazaki film can overshadow Spiderverse
  13. The AMCs nearby me in NYC have added additional showtimes for Barbie in Dolby. The movie was only limited to one per day at most locations but now an extra nighttime show has been added.
  14. I love DeNiro and he'd probably be my prediction for runner-up but Gladstone is going to be the real MVP of Flower Moon. DeNiro notoriously doesn't campaign, either, and SLP has been his first nomination since 1990. There wasn't a rush to reward him there when they easily could have over Christoph Waltz
  15. He will go Supporting and the category favors comedic standouts in hits-- Brad Pitt (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood), Whoppi Goldberg (Ghost), Cuba Gooding Jr (Jerry Maguire), Allison Janney (I Tonya), Marisa Tomei (My Cousin Vinny), Mira Sorvino (Mighty Aphrodite), John Gielgud (Arthur), Kevin Kline (Fish Called Wanda), Jack Palance (City Slickers) A major unrewarded Leading star winning in Supporting would also mirror like Christian Bale and George Clooney
  16. Do not watch the Ken dance clip lol. It's a moment/song best enjoyed with very little context But obviously everyone will watch it.. and I think that spot is what will push the movie the extra inch for 100m and ignite the Oscar talk for Gosling
  17. Looks like a Ridley Scott movie, alright--astonishingly epic battle sequences and scale. Bad everything else
