  1. Superheroes are an American-specific invention. Although some like THOR is straight out of the oldest of Scandinavian mythology. SUPERMAN is modeled after Zeus and Apollo, and Wonder Woman after Artemis or Diana the Huntress. But you can understand why Potter, Pirates and Hobbits are more popular in Europe than Superman or Fantastic Four/X-Men.
  2. I was predicting $600M and folks told me to calm down
  3. BLIND SIDE & PROPOSAL & even HEAT are all Sandra. But GRAVITY is Cuaron show.
  4. It may do well just for curious audience (not more than $60M). But Stallone & Arnie are losing fans fast in the days of ensemble pics like FF and fanboy/girl movies like TA & THG. I think GRUDGE MATCH looks more interesting, the story is more human. ESCAPE PLAN looks like another prison break movie. But who knows what in this crazy year. Everybody's predicting GRAVITY at $100M or so. Now it is making $124M in 10 days. Nobody knows shit anymore.
  5. OS for GRAVITY seems to be less spectacular than its domestic performance. Goes to show it is the overseas audience that still crave for the fast-cutting slam-bang style of Michael Bay than the more contemplative Cuaron.
  6. Goes to show, some European audience is pretty much indifferent to American superhero movies: they all look the same to them.
  7. They love doing this yes? Pitting one star vehicle against another of his own
  8. The thread has degenerated to Nazis, censored reporting of financial? Should the Mod move this to another thread?
  9. Folks are predicting $250M domestic & even $300M with Oscar push and all. If OS can reach another $300M, I don't see how $600M WW - which many balked & laughed at - is not reachable.
  10. Hey how much did PACRIM make last weekend?
  11. I am not as optimistic as some who would predict this to be a $300M grosser. But it will outgross Bullock's BLIND SIDE to be her biggest hit unadjusted. Adjusted BLIND SIDE grossed $271M, amazing run that film.
  12. If Warner spends on an Oscar campaign and actually wins the majors (Picture, Director, Actress) , this thing could play well into 2014 and crashes past $300M. Kudos to Warner Bros, again, for taking such a huge creative/business risk with questionable selling point (endless tracking shots, and minimal dialogue/plot). Remind me of 2010 when they released an insane, high concept movie like INCEPTION. When I saw this on its first release day, not knowing how much it will gross, I keep saying to myself: "Warners are insane for greenlighting this!" And they are rewarded with $800M WW payload. Orgasmic!
  13. Hanks is one of my favorite American actors ever. He is no longer getting the best stuff but he still kicks ass even in glasses and blue t shirt.
  14. It's called the spill-over effect. One dominating success creates a run-off to other mildly interesting movies. When a theater runs out of AVATAR tickets, those folks wouldn't want to drive back with their tails between their legs. They would stay at the multiplex and see SHERLOCK. Families stay for ALVIN. Everybody wins, well, in this case, Fox 2009 is Year of Fox. The studio can make a series of failures for 2 straight years or no movie for a year due to AVATAR+ALVIN insane tag-team success. Plus that year NIGHT AT MUSEUM + ICE AGE3 contributed $1.2B to the Box Office. All four movies accounted for $4B+ for Fox. Too bad that year Fox also had to contend with hundreds of low grossers & flops (DRAGONBALL, STREET FIGHTER, ALIEN IN TEH ATTIC).
  15. If CP number holds, this may do a long-legged run ala Scorsese's DEPARTED: opened with $27M and on its way to $132M
  16. Why No China release? Hyped to the max, critics fave, effects as selling point, featuring positive portrayal of Chinese tech.
  17. The 3D is fun for the first few minutes but the rest of the movie doesn't depend on this technology at all. Cuaron's skill as a storyteller is what this move ever needs anyway... Never thought the movie is a metaphor for Bullock's
  18. Why China objects to the release of this? Bullock is Or don't tell me that is
