Yea, I don't get the popularity of SPIDER-MAN movies but not other superheroes.
My guess is that Peter Parker is a socially awkward, nice guy who can beat up his bullies
and Japanese loves their cute, pretty boy scouts (just like HARRY POTTER, DH2 made tons
of money there).
I saw it and I thought it was pretty entertaining. But a couple of things:
It is unnecessarily violent (body parts exploding). I don't know
if PG13 would propel it to blockbuster status but at least it would help.
It is also relentlessly dystopian.
I am just looking at the whole thing from mainstream pov. TRANSFORMERS movies have interesting characters? Don't think it makes a diff because audience is eating that frenzied editing of visual candy. So many expensive blockbuster nowadays have bland, cardboard-cutout characters. OS audience don't care so much....
Although Charlie Hunnam is miles better than this guy :
BATTLESHIP has the promise of a great blockbuster. But I think for action scifi blockbuster to work you need, uh, faster-moving ships. The ship battle in the movie is pretty realistic enough and I am big fan of "sea battle" movies (RED OCTOBER, MASTER/COMMANDER etc) but the craft needs to blast though the speed of sound to give you a sense of frantic action coupled with fast-cutting frenzied editing i.e.. TRANSFORMERS movies & Bay-ism. The reason for PR lack of box office response in US: slow robots. It takes forever to deliver that big punch..
HOBBIT2 features a dragon. In less than 6 months, GA would experience Giant Lizard rampaging the cities in GODZILLA, a safe Giant Lizard in GOOD DINO, and a Cool Flying Lizard in DRAGON2. That's 4 Giant Lizards movies in about 6 months. No fatigue?
Most predicted $60-$75M. I predicted $65, no more.
So this results is just insane in my book
So far, China alone accounts for about 27%
of PACRIM's WW taking.
