  1. Deadline is predicting a $91M 2nd weekend cume. This movie is doing better every week To put it into perspective: the first one did $76M off a $27M 2nd weekend. HT2 could end up in the $175M range
  2. The current Bond has a more sobering look into spying business but it is also too serious for my liking.
  3. This thing goes on a cycle. Connery period sets the tone, hardcore spying & womanizing. Moore period is the light-hearted one. Craig period is back on the super-serious tone but with a complete lack of sexuality. The next Bond period hopefully will be less serious that the current stretch.
  4. He is a cop in a drug-infested world in Traffic, a drug cartel enforcer in Savages, as the most famous Medellin drug dealer ever Pablo Escobar in Escobar, and a hitman with connection to the Medellin drug cartel in Sicario. He can't seem to get out
  5. That's why you need to chill out, break out a bunch of booze, hang back, and watch the Martian on the biggest screen. Of course it is October already. The Martian is playing.
  6. Looks like Battle L.A., Skyline, Battleship crossed with Contagion, WWZ and what have you.
  7. The 80s: Blade Runner, undisputed. Black Rain is my personal fave. Legend has a minor cult following. The 90s: this is a near dead period for Ridley. Thelma & Louise is well received but 1492 was a bomb. But that movie sets the tone for every medieval/ancient history movie in the years to come. This movie is also another personal favorite of mine, the visual is just incredible. Depardieu is miscast but that is a minor complaint. White Squall & GI Jane kinda disappeared below the radar. Then he came back strong with Gladiator & Black Hawk Down in the 2000s. The 10s: Robin Hood, Exodus, Prometheus are middling to OK. Maybe Martian is the breakout for him.
  8. Thelma & Louise is light? Seriously dude you should watch that rape scene again.
  9. I share a lot of your observations. I feel that Ridley Scott is not really required to direct this one. Ridley is more of a doom-n-gloom guy, look at Alien, Blade Runner & Gladiator. Martian is very light-hearted, too polite, very, very careful not to offend anyone, to the point of ...but it is rare to see a movie so sunshine-y and optimistic. I will be surprised if the audience at large does not embrace this one. This could be the Holiday Smash everybody is waiting for. But here is the strange thing: this is probably the first film that I saw this year where the characters seldom argue, everybody's emotion is muted, everybody almost agrees on everything, everybody is gung-ho, everybody is teaming up, there is almost no crisis. The only character who is really frustrated is Matt Damon. And oh yeah, they didn't kill Sean Bean.
  10. There should be a museum wing dedicated for this one...
