  1. Jeez, it had been a rumor before it's old news since the end of 2014.
  2. MGM is fully functioning studio right? Why do they have to hunt for partners? Although Warner will be an interesting choice. For Warner, they are in desperate need for a franchise even if they have the DCU going for the next 5 years. But let's not be surprised if they take the Bond franchise into even darker, grittier territory. But in the end, I heard Sony took very little profit for the mega success of Skyfall. Probably scare away any potential partners. Home Video business could be good though. Just keep re-releasing those box sets
  3. In 2 weeks time The Martian weekend gross will be less than $10M.
  4. A few things: Whether or not that scene comes from the book is besides the point. I feel that the scene is written to excite or to dramatize the 3rd act. Launching yourself using the air from your suit in order to reach another astronaut guided only by your instinctive sense of direction is different from the thoughtful plan of surviving by building a mini farm or using old tech to communicate with Earth. I am OK with that though. The best action movies require last minute grab of chance and luck. The other thing: I am not lumping The Martian with "ridiculously edited" movies like Transformers or tons of other forgettable action movies. I made a point of how The Martian bored a couple of teenagers who were seen texting, putting up their legs in front of me. The Martian has a more "adult" pacing which is counterpoint to the breakneck pace of a lot of big Summer tent pole. There is a reason why The Martian is released in the Fall.
  5. Well, they have to inject some cool action scenes in order to spice up the largely, mostly rational movie. I saw a couple of teenagers putting their legs, texting, yawning and walked out from the theater with the blah expression other faces. It is really sad now that Hollywood has to keep churning out ridiculously edited movies for the increasingly attention-deficit generation. I remember when my parents told me to "slow down, sip your wine, appreciate life"
  6. Kong has always been climbing tall buildings in all versions, not tower over them. Unless Warner wants to throw away consistency, the new Godzilla (2014 version) is depicted as taller than many city landmarks.
  7. Universal has Kong, Fast 8, Despicable Me 3, 50 Shades 2, Mummy Reboot Fox has Apes 3, Fantastic 2, Wolverine, Croods 2, Maze Runner 3 Warner has Justice League 1, Wonder Woman, Untitled DC (Aquaman?), Untitled Nolan, Geostorm (intriguing), Ready Player One (!), 2 Lego movies? Sony has Dark Tower (!), Bad Boys 3, Barbie (wtf?), Uncharted, Spider-Man, Get Smurfy, Equalizer 2 Paramount has...World War Z sequel, and a possible Terminator sequel. Disney has Episode 8, Guardians 2, Pirates 5, Cars 3, Beauty & the Beast, Fall Animation Untitled, Thor Ragnarok Disney takes the crown of 2017, likely.
  8. In 2009, 3D was really "Whoa!" for everybody including me. But in 2016 0r 2017, 3D is like an 80s fad, everyone is embarrassed to be seen buying an overpriced ticket. Some of the best 3D movies are available....yes, folks, on BluRay. I have to say I am impressed with Jurassic Park & Mad Max Fury Rd. Plus a whole load of BBC Documentary (3D fans should check out Kingdom of Plants). But that is aided by active 3D glasses which enhanced the pop-out effects. I saw Hobbit 2, Wrath of Titans, Dawn of Apes, Pacific Rim, Gravity - all are unimpressive as 3D shows. Tron Legacy, Prometheus & Hobbit 1 were the only impressive 3D engagements I experienced after Avatar.
  9. People are estimating $200M for Revenant? Didn't hear hype that big. Innaritu is a guy to watch after Birdman, so I am there opening night. But $200M?
  10. Bridge of Spies & Crimson Peak took away some of the Martian's heat. I bet younger audience is turned off by the slow burn pace of The Martian and turned to the silliness of Goosebumps. It's never easy ride for Matt. Next week is another trio of openers. Rock the Kasbah is getting 2000 screens? Wow.
  11. Jessica Chastain in the Top 2 again? Jan 18-20, 2013: Zero Dark Thirty & Mama Sept 2-4, 2011: The Help & The Debt
  12. Love the cast. Love Del Toro. This is bad for audience looking for something different than the usual, mass market fare.
  13. Different type of adult audience I think The overlap should be minimal
  14. "Alien Engineers? No, thanks! I am taking this other train!"
  15. Rebecca Ferguson: she can revive Tom Cruise, but can she revive a dying Alien/Prometheus franchise?
  16. See that Eiffel Tower? That thing must be more than 900ft tall. Warner's modern day marketing cannot stretch the bulls*t factor too far. The angle is not the best but King Kong may look like a tiny appendage on the tower compared to the ginormous Lizard King. If Warner is doing a Monster Universe, they have to maintain some consistency. King Kong height may be doubled but to the factor of 10? 40 times? That is ridiculous. Maybe there is a mad scientist who injects Kong with a Hulk serum or something.
