You are not stupid. This movie does require you to have a little bit of pop culture knowledge. I find it the most interesting movie to come down in a while. The ending is dark, heartbreaking, and beautifully depressing. It kinda startling to see ScarJo's true physical form.
Apes in 3D is very disappointing indeed. And the best use of 3D in movies is still James' Avatar. I just saw Avatar on 3D bluray again last week, and the depth of field created there is still superior to the current batch of heavily promoted 3D features, including The Hobbit movies.
$45M is low for a movie that is a smash hit in many countries. But considering China's taste in movies (SH & giant robots), that gross is pretty substantial.
This is a more thoughtful action drama than your typical SH movies. Plus, there are some really frightening stuff in it: "You follow Koba now.." sends chill down everybody's spine. A young kid cried (why do parents bring young children to movies with "intense, frightening scenes" in it?).
It's not likely to hit $600M WW now, it seems. World Cup & TF4, not a very good timing by Dreamworks, and their counter-programming didn't work that well for some reason.
