Our Christine and multiverse Christine both tell Strange 'he has to be the one with the knife'. He's also asked several times if he's happy, and seemingly hasn't accepted that success hasn't given him happiness. At the end of the movie, he actively chooses put his trust in America Chavez and not himself. No glory in that, and it's not even remotely subtle in how it's presented, either. Strange has also spent like six movies keeping everyone at arm's length. He sees through his own universe and through the multiverse (both in terms of his literal other selves and how other people in other universes respond to him) how self-destructive this becomes. Because of this, he admits to himself that he's afraid of getting close to people and tells/shows multiverse Christine, Wong and Chavez how much he cares for them. No, it's not as obviously telegraphed the standard 'douche becomes good' narrative these movies always have, but it's far from subtle at the same time. There's a very clear and really quite lovely story for Strange here. There are dozens of legitimate complaints about this movie, but this really isn't one of them.

I haven't seen Avatar in like 11 years, but this trailer was beautiful and made me want to rewatch it. I miss James Horner.

Olsen wasn't around for much of the reshoots. I saw it again today and the reshoots must have centred around the first third or so of the movie. It really stands apart from rest of it. It's never less than fun, but the pacing is off at times for sure. My main take away this time was how absolutely glorious that low brass sounded in my cinema. I know Elfman is something of a controversial figure these days, but I can't remember the last time one of these movies wore its score so proudly. Normally composers get a moment or two to stand out but otherwise have to hide or coast. Elfman's score is so prominent from the beginning to the end.

My first impression is that the first half is rough and that the second half is everything I wanted from this. My biggest takeaway is how delighted I am by how much of Raimi's dorky wholesome drama made it through. Bar a few lines, the movie is completely devoid of cynicism. The conflict isn't solved by who can punch harder, it's solved by a frightened, insecure man learning to be open to others.

Raimi's being his wonderfully honest self in press (his constant saying that Doctor Strange is like no.5 at best for him in terms of comic book characters makes me roar - nice change of pace from people pretending they've always been fans), and he does seem genuinely pleased. During Oz press he said he didn't want to do a sequel and talked a lot about story problems, so I'm cautiously optimistic. I just hope he can use this inevitable success to get a smaller movie rolling. I really like the sound of that desert island horror movie he's been developing. The writers are always talking about meeting with him on Twitter, so it might be going ahead. I just want more Raimi.

Raimi's kooky but wholesome approach would be great for FF and he does love the characters (he listed them as one of his favourites in a Spider-Man 2 interview and Strange was nowhere to be found nnnnn), but I imagine depending on the reaction to MoM that he's either one-and-done or going to direct the third one.
