My Batman Returns blu-ray fell into my Playstation last night and, my brothers and sisters in Christ, it is still the one. So camp but so dark, so melodramatic but so sincere, so grim but so empathetic, so disgusting but so sexy...it's a million contradictory things at once, and within the million genres it covers, it never feels like it's consciously moving between one or the other - it just is. What's even wilder is how everyone involved was somehow on the same (non-existent) page, coming together to make this beautifully bizarre movie that completely abandons logic for pure emotion. It's a miracle. I love Edward Scissorhands, I love Ed Wood, but I'm increasingly convinced that this is Burton's masterpiece.

I want the big budget slasher movie vibe that Scream 2 and 3 had. They felt like the first slasher blockbusters. Halloween Kills had a bit of it, but those movies just feel big.

Guessing that they'll double down on Gale. Hard to believe she hasn't actually had a phone call yet. (Well, one she answered - Randy beat her to it in Scream 2.)

I love how they handled Gale in this. There was a real effort to not vilify her for her ambition for once. Sidney making it clear that absolutely none of this was her fault (as awkwardly shot as that scene is) is about four films late. Also, Sidney telling her that she 'shouldn't be here either' and Sam asking her if she's alright at the end are the first real acknowledgement that she's been through hell herself (several times!). She also helped throw a serial killer over a kitchen island. -
There's no way to organically bring back Sidney without making her a victim again, and absolutely noone wants that. Her story is done. Gale is high profile and works in media so is easier to integrate. We also don't know hardly anything about her personal life, so there's more to mine there. This is for the best. I love Sidney and I want her to have a happy ending.

I love that the internet's collective response is of genuine happiness that Sid is going to be left alone with her hunky husband and girls.

Carpenter's score for Firestarter is absolute, well, fire, and ya'll should check it out. -
Not ya'll expecting Strange to bring up Christine in any of his subsequent appearances. As if there was time for that or as if it was at all appropriate. Strange is still clearly hung up on Christine in the last movie. He treated her like crap and she moved on, but he didn't. The last shot is of him in the sanctum, alone because his ego meant he had no real connection with anyone. Here Strange learns to accept this and ultimately tries to do better. It's completely natural. Cumberbatch and McAdams have no chemistry at all, but story wise this completely checks out.
