Indian Box Office Thread | Jawan overtakes Pathaan, becomes highest grossing Indian movie of 2023

Bollywood is a bit dead I feel even outside in the NRI markets.

I remember as a kid bollywood blockbusters would dominate conversation for months and be seen by everyone.

2000s was the hey day really, movies like KKKG, Kal Ho Na Ho, Jodha Akbar, Om Shanti Om etc.

It seems regional films and south films have taken their spot...for example punjabi audiences instead of watching bollywood movies in theaters now watch punjabi films and they come out for big south films like RRR and KGF.

Bollywood needs a revamp...they are doing something wrong which is making people stay away...i feel content is bad these days...if they are going too classy movie is going for a toss and while being commercial centric they are not able to entertain the audiences

This recent spike of interest in south movies is temporary phenomena. Hindi audience won't get 3-4 big south movies movies each year like KGF, RRR & Pushpa. 2022 was an exception. They will ultimately return to theatres to watch bollywood movies.

Like I watched Johaa Akbar yesterday and yeah modern bollywood movies have better production values.

However that chemistry between the two leads is what bollywood lacks in films i find these days.

I watched that historical epic with Akshay and Panipant lol

The leads where so boring and bad

I look back and none of the recent bollywood movies had much scale or spectacle or interest like even War or Padamaat and films like that and they made 400-500 cr.

maybe thats a factor too....complete miscast (leads) especially akshay as samrat and bacchan pandey was messed up at so many levels...wish he does something like hera pheri, welcome, garam masala kind of movies to comeback...hes good at comedy...

To be honest even better production values wont help...it has to be coupled with content/music/promotions etc...

when will they return is the question? Every industry has bounced back a bit with some hits while Bollywood has just 2 hits this year...

Kannada -7 hits

Telugu - 8 hits

Tamil - 3-4 hits...but they have some decent grossers which falls in avg zone

Telugu is having pretty eh year as well. There were 3 back to back hits this month which made it for a good read otherwise RRR was only real winner this year.

Bollywood has 3 HITs; Gangu, BB2 & The Kashmir Files.

Tamil is the best one so far this year.

Please have a look at successful movies in telugu...how many successes does tamil have compared to telugu? You have different way of analysing and judging movies

Vikram, Thiru, Don and Viruman or KVRK

in telugu we can list out DJ tillu, Bheemla Nayak, RRR, Bimbisara, sita ramam, karthikeya 2, bangarraju, major

Nope. May be 10% of that. Will get weekly number on Saturday.

Probably u are correct. But, DB being popular in India, in addition to direct handling of Distribution by Sony at atleast 5x more locs then JJK — just didn't gave much doubt.

Here's how I am seeing it — ₹3.0 Cr Fri / ₹3.7 Cr Sat / ₹4.9 Cr Sun

Well, looking forward for your numbers

Bheemla Nayak & Bangarraju didn't recover, so as per ROI model they weren't HIT.

RRR didnt break even in Andhra, TN, KA & Kerala, had minor losses.

DJ Tillu & Major are chillar success but fine. Bimbisara, Sita Ramam & Karthikeya 2 definitely HITs.

I was under impression that Tamil industry had more HITs but seems like 5 it is. For what its worth, they didn't had big FLOPs like Tolly. Beast is considered underperformer but it did 120. Similarily Valimai also did closer to 100.

Anyways, unrelated to this, I am trying to come up with a verdict system that don't consider ROI but how a film performed at box office as method. By that films like SVP, Bheemla, Beast, Valimai which might not have made money because they were sold at high prices to other parties may be judged as success due to their actual performance being good.

If it had done those numbers it would have got a lot bigger coverage. Now there is simply nothing.

For Bheemla nayak you need to factor in ticket prices issue in AP and last moment release due to AP governments vendetta...if you look at its footfalls it would have done great here compared to other regions...if this movie had normal ticket prices it would have been a big success....also the rates would have been revised considering this issue and Bangarraju recovered its investment 30-33crs its a BE for sure...hit

RRR also recovered overall...just because movies have some minor losses in certain territories you cannot claim its not a success...you need look at big picture
