Iron Man may have not been a hugely successful character prior to RDJ playing him, but he did have a few cartoons and a best selling comic (not that, that actually means something).

I think a lot of luck is why Iron Man character has become so popular. You can thank Sony having Spider-man and and Fox having Wolverine, Marvel Studios pretty much has been pushing Iron Man as their mascot for the last 6 years.

This is the first comic book based Superhero film that has opened during this time of year since the 70s. Thor 2 was always going to have a smaller OW in this spot than in the Summer opener spot. The fact that it's on track to increase nearly 25% on OW is just fine. Now, hopefully, it develops better legs than it would have in the Summer. Marvel SH Movie #2-wise, we have these to compare to:

 

IM2 2.44

X2 2.51

FF2 2.27

 

 

If Thor ends up with 75m for its OW, then if it follows IM2 and X2 from there, it will make over 200m. Considering the inevitably huge OS increase, that will be just fine.

The elephant in the room is Catching Fire, which comes out in 2 weeks.However, I think most people will have seen Thor 2 by the first 2 weeks anyway.

I don't think the winter holds will be better than summer. It won't have summer weekdays to help out, it's got a mega typhoon 14 days away, and a smaller, but still significant storm (TH2) a couple weeks after that. It'll get a Thanksgiving boost, sure... but will that counter the rest?

 

If the OW is in the low 80s, it might struggle to reach 200.
