ITALY (Botteghino): 'Minions 2' on course to become biggest film of 2022

Yeah, that was a good projection! ^^ The fact that its initial daily pattern was basically identical to the first FB deceived me.

The result is bad in perspective, as the next chapter is now not guaranteed to even reach the double-digit mark.

What a great weekend! Up a whooping 52 from the same weekend of last year, with the yearly gap furtherly reduced to -5.37%.

Mary Poppins and Bohemian Rhapsody are the clear winners.

The former will increase over 3M next week, and should most certainly pass FB2 for #2 of the season. How high it can go depends on if it gains enough momentum over the holidays to remain a top choice even when 2019 begins (Ralph and Aquaman release).

The latter is now guaranteed to overtake IW for the top spot of the year and to pass the 20M mark, a mark that only Beauty and the Beast has passed in the last 3 years. It was considerably down on Friday, but recovered greatly on Sat/Sun. It will become the highest grossing Hollywood movie since freaking The Force Awakens. Definitely insane.

Not a bad result for the local comedy Amici Come Prima, which will follow the usual pattern for local comedies released before Christmas: huge business the last week of the year, total collapse the weeks after (60/80% drops).

Mediocre for Bumblebbe, but totally expected. The Dark Knight was only the 35th grosser of the 2016-2017 season here, and finished with 4.7M euros. The spin-off has a chance of beating it.

Overall, holds have been stronger than expected. The Grinch recovered so well on Sunday that like 60% of its 4-day business comes from that day. I don't know if it still has one million left before it disappears on January 1st.

Tomorrow, the Spider Man toon opens.

Edit: Fantastic Beasts 2 was down 90% from last weekend! Won't even reach 12.8M.

Just like every year, the Christmas local comedy got by far the best increase. On Christmas alone it made almost 90% of the business it made on OW.

Solid number for Mary Poppins, which is #2 with just a little less than 1 million. It's Christmas gross is 20% above Moana, which exploded on Boxing Day and with very good legs finished above 14M. That movie will be Poppins' best comparison.

Once again, absolutely wonderful day for Bohemian Rhapsody, that almost doubled the OD of Spider-Verse on its 5th week of release. 564K on Xmas and the 18M mark passed. Infinity War may fall as soon as today.

Bumblebee stayed ahead of Spider man, but just barely and with a gross below 300k. Looks like it and Spider Man will hurt each other for the next few days, and will probably collpase once the Aquaman/Ralph duo opens.

The Grinch will miss the 6M mark. It's out of the top 10 with less than 100K, and will have a very limited number of shows this week.

BOXING DAY

As terrestrial said, Bohemian Rhapsody is now the #1 film of the year, ahead of Infinity War.

Mary Poppins fell behind Moana, even though just by a mere 10k. It's now at 5.9M and #8 of the season. Still looking at a final gross in the mid-teens.

Amici come Prima is doing very well, but unfortunately tomorrow it will start dropping a lot (the standard decrease is around -80% o.O).

Bumblebee and Spiderverse neck and neck again. Ben is Back is, as expected, taking great advantage of the holidays as a solid alternative to the main commercial hits.

What's unexpected is The Grinch's bump. I guess the lack of a classic animated film (unusual on Christmas) is helping it. The film is now in the bottom of the top 10 of the season, with almost 5.5M in the bank.

Today Poppins will try to beat Moana's 831K gross.

In fact, that 815k is actually an increase of 255% from last wednesday. I think the week-to-week increase for this coming weekend is almost certain.

You have to remember that last weekend it recovered very well, and its Sunday was 3 times its Friday. During the holidays Fridays tend to remain about flat from Thursday, and the weekend IM will be more like 4x than 7x. BR should get a weekend of 1.3/1.5M, +/-10% from last weekend.

27/12 GROSSES

1 IL RITORNO DI MARY POPPINS (MARY POPPINS RETURNS) 20/12/2018 USA WALT DISNEY S.M.P. ITALIA € 778.387 121.796
2 LA BEFANA VIEN DI NOTTE 27/12/2018 ITA LUCKY RED DISTRIB. € 467.007 72.307
3 AMICI COME PRIMA 19/12/2018 ITA MEDUSA FILM S.P.A. € 379.712 56.361
4 BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY 29/11/2018 USA 20TH CENTURY FOX ITALIA S.P.A. € 343.513 48.133
5 MOSCHETTIERI DEL RE 27/12/2018 ITA VISION DISTRIBUTION € 267.965 39.900

10 IL GRINCH (THE GRINCH) 29/11/2018 USA UNIVERSAL S.R.L. € 47.251 7.675

All things considered, Mary Poppins held quite well. It had competition from the local films La Befana Vien di Notte and Moschettieri del Re, and Moana's 831K gross was on a Tuesday (which is generally stronger than Thursdays). If we do a Thu-to-Thu comparison, Mary Poppins did beat Moana, by 10% (778K vs 712K). With Moana's legs, Poppins would finish at 15+.

Bohemian Rhapsody survived the local openers very well. Tomorrow it should pass the 20M mark.

The Grinch is back to normality, with a drop over 80% from Boxing Day (compared to the -60% of Poppins and Bulmblebee). The drop is worse than Amici come Prima (-75% or so), which held better than usual for a "cinepanettone" (the local comedy of Christmas).

I guess holiday effect is in play, Friday's gross wasn't that far from Thursday, some show increase like Bohemian and La Befana Vien di Notte but poppin and AMICI COME PRIMA both drop from Thursday.

Bohemian is now the highest grossing film of the year, and Friday's number is an 100% increase from last Friday.

Movies attracting kids and families had for obvious reasons the worst holds: Spider Man slightly decreased, Bumblebee remained flat, The Grinch jumped a little because of some gained showings. Mary Poppins dropped a little too much, I guess this is the first meh number of its run so far. It's still ahead of Moana, which decreased even more on Friday (-12%, vs Poppins' -7%) but that was with Passengers and BFG opening that day.

Again, Bohemian Rhapsody is a monster. No sign of losing its momentum yet.

For the 4-day frame we're looking at 3.2/3.3M for Poppins (+20%), 1.6/1.7M for Bohemian Rhapsody (+20% as well). 0.7/0.8M for Bumblebee (-10%).

Wouldn't that be too low ? given that the movie has one 752k in two days. only 450k on saturday and 500k on sunday? That is low given that even on christmas day's where cinema partially closed, the movie still managed to grab 560k+

You know, it looks like you're right. Those projections were based on the daily pattern in Usa, as I only have some daily datas from the last two years, when New Year's Even fell into the weekend. But looking at 2013's pattern (I forgot I kept some of Frozen's dailies just for the good old memories :P) it seems that Saturday may jump 40/50% for adult movies and 20% or so for the ones attracting a younger audience, and Sunday should bump the opposite way.

If that pattern is respected, Poppins will do something like 850K/1.2M on Sat/Sun and BR 600k/700k, meaning a 3.6M weekend for the former and a 2.0M weekend for the latter. We'll see.

Yeah, when all the kids are at home, Saturday is just another Friday for a family movie (Grinch and Spider-Man are flat from Friday). And since many were off on Friday, something similar can be said for adult movies as well.

Poppins got a bad day (down 9% on a Saturday) after a meh one. If it doesn't rebound near 1 million tomorrow, things are not looking to good for it when Aquaman and Ralph open this Tuesday.

La Befana vien di Notte is showing great legs, thanks to its Epiphany-centered theme.

Bohemian Rhapsody passed the 20M mark, and today it will pass Beauty and the Beast as the highest-grossing Hollywood movie since early 2016.

Local comedy Amici come Prima is now #9 of the season and has overtaken The Grinch, which will apparently lose most of its showtimes left once Ralph opens and should therefore stop at 5.8/5.9M.

I think Ralph will have low numbers, the first movie did just 6.6 M EUR and the movie for what i'm seeing has done worse almost everywhere. I think Disney should have released it weeks ago.

Acquman will damage MP because it will take away a lot of screens and shows not because i see it so huge. I think it will end at around 8-9 M EUR because of the holiday season instead of 6-7 in the fall.
