Endgame effect!!!

 

Homecoming opened on a Thursday with 645K for a 2.7M OW.

Far From Home needs to stay around 1M today in order to beat Captain Marvel's OW (assuming weather doesn't help it over the weekend too). A place in the top 10 SH of all time is definitely in play.

 

The other movies experienced harsh holds (mitigated by the bad weather), with Pets 2 surprisingly remaining close to Tuesday #, and Aladdin unsurprisingly getting hurt by the competition+loss of showtimes+day after cheap tickets combo.

Finally the SIAE report about 2018. And it certainly hasn't been a good year for the box office.

 

(translations -> spettacoli = showings // ingressi = admissions // spesa al botteghino = yearly gross // spesa del pubblico = money spent on food, drinks, etc)

 

The two main troubles about the Italian box office: people in the south don't go to the movies very often (and the north/south gap is even increasing) and summer is generally a dead season. That said, the numbers, while bad, don't necessarily point to a trend, as this year is up from 2018 and will remain above it, and 2015/2016 have been really strong years in terms of offerings, with 2016 being the standout thanks to the Checco Zalone movie selling like 10 million admissions on its own. I personally think that this year we'll reach the 100M mark again.

 

And here's some Cinetel (94% of the market) vs Siae (100% complete numbers) comparison:

 

Bohemian Rhapsody (2018 only) > 2.995.492 vs 3.076.146 (+2.7%)

Infinity War > 2.645.414 vs 2.693.438 (+1.8%)

Hotel Transylvania 3 > 1.934.922 vs 2.049.123 (+6%)

Incredibles 2 > 1.874.457 vs 1.976.689 (+5.4%)

Fantastic Beasts 2 >1.825.643 vs 1.872.396 (+2.6%)

 

As you can see, the rule to adjust the daily numbers Cinetel releases are pretty clear. Superhero movies, and all films filled with special effects and requiring a big screen, rarely add more than 2% to the gross that is reported here with the daily updates. Adult movies can go higher at 3/4%, unless they achieve blockbuster status (in that case the % decreases, see Bohemian Rhapsody) or unless they are oscar movies with modest grosses (the % in that case is usually 5%+ as the smaller screens have more relative weiight). The more a film attract kids, the more it tends to gain: I2 was above 5% but HT3, which is certainly more childish, even got a +6%.

A bad day in general. Spider Man should probably be revised down, as both a 12M+ total and an OW over Captain Marvel's look unlikely based on this number.

Drops from prev Thu:

Annabelle > -55% (very nice, sub-50% drop incoming)

Toy Story 4 > -49% (really a terrible run for this)

Restiamo Amici > -57%

Pets 2 > -30% (!)

The White Crow > -60%

The Professor > -59%

Aladdin > -40%

Endgame > -92% (it's now pretty obvious that FFH just hurt it, and those who wanted to see it again already did in the first days)

Usual summer Friday, with family movies being basically flat from Thursday (except Aladdin, which had a nice 20%+ jump) and adult movies getting "stronger" increases.

 

And this is actually a pretty good number for Far From Home, which stabilized more than what its Thursday suggested.

Wed > - vs 1.462M

Thu > 645K vs 855K (-42%)

Fri > 511K (-21%) vs 791K (-7.5%)

Sat > 690K (+35%)

Sun > 700K+ (estimate)

 

We should also note that Homecoming is the lowest grossing Spider Man movie of all, both on OW and total gross, so running ahead of it is kind of a necessity for Far From Home. That said I'm pretty sure this Friday locks up a double digit finish (=above Homecoming and TASM2) and makes Aquaman's 10.75M the real target (Captain Marvel stopped at 10.24).

So I had yet to see Far From Home.

And I had yet to see Toy Story 4.

And there was also Endgame, that will be pulled from most theaters in a few days.

I thought "I have to go to the cinema today".

Bad weather helped, and FFH got a very very good Saturday increase, quite better than Homecoming's despite the higher dailies. May even get to 4M OW with this hold, and Captain Marvel's total is definitely on the conservative side. That Thursday drop was just tricky!

Way way worse. Not at Pets 2 level, but it's running more than 50% behind the previous chapter, which ended its run with an impressive 13.7M total. Toy Story 4 stands at 4.5M after a 0.5M weekend, and its legs have been really mediocre. It will be the first Toy Story movie to finish below 1M admissions.
