I don't think that was really the point. He was a credulous boob.

I don't know what the writers really meant by the speech but I saw The Future as more morally right and less cult-ish than a lot of people seem to, including you.

Technically, it's not two weeks, yet, and I'm not sure how spoilery this is, but:

They weren't cultish, they were just a collection of communist writers. Ones without a particularly good plan, really. I suppose the question of being morally right comes down to how much you agree with communism (at least in its true, intellectual form -- as opposed to the significantly more totalitarian approach in reality). The movie was poking fun at them, sure, but it was poking fun at everyone. I mean, when a studio exec is a metaphor for Jesus (!) you know the whole thing is a crackup. The one theme that the movie takes seriously, I suppose, is that art (even crappy commercial art) is a worthy endeavor, and that the images presented -- no matter how false -- have a sort of Truth to them. Mannix struggles with this all the way to the end: what's the "right thing to do", the harder thing that you feel is right, or the easy way that isn't bad? The sympathetic characters -- Hobie and Mannix -- all choose the harder path, and the others take the easy route, whether it's the writers trying to make some quick cash to donate to the Motherland or Baird just going with whatever is easiest at any given point.
