BK007
Saw Saving Private Ryan and thought it was superb that it made $30m on OW and legged it to $200m. I like the $200m barrier as it suggests true blockbuster status. A lot of recent films will be excluded but these films look great from a 2014 perspective. 1) Sixth Sense $293m 2) Inception $292m 3) Chronicles of Narnia $291m 4) Home Alone $285m 5) Meet the Fockers $279m 6) The Hangover $277m 7) Gravity $274m 8) Shrek $267m 9) How the Grinch Stole Christmas $260m 10) Jaws $260m 11) The Blind Side $255m 12) Despicable Me $251m 13) Night at the Museum $250m 14) Men in Black $250m (or maybe not, I don't actually know if it was based on something) 15) Toy Story 2 $245m 16) Bruce Almighty $242m 17) My Big Fat Greek Wedding $241m 18) Cast Away $233m 19) Signs $227m 20) Mrs Doubtfire $219m 21) Ted $218m 22) Ghost $217m 23) Alvin and the Chipmunks $217m 24) Saving Private Ryan $216m 25) 300 $210m 26) Wedding Crashers $209m Don't know if you'd count Star Trek, I Am Legend, Twister, Ghostbusters, Beverly Hills Cop, Rush Hour 2, How to Train Your Dragon, Back to the Future But having just compiled it, it seems that there are comedies that do break out to massive numbers and that also happens to December family movies. I guess because there are so many comedies that don't and a huge array of wannabes that flood December that makes it more impressive than it might be. Still, can't believe things like Alvin made $200m.
peludo
I do not know if it is what you are looking for but I think we can include in that list any movie that had done 200-299 range and it adjusts to over 400, for instance. And I do not see in your list some movies that accomplish that. I will mention them: Movie: real gross / adjusted gross The Exorcist: 232 / 901 The Empire Strikes Back: 290 / 800 Raiders of the Lost Ark: 248 / 721 Ghostbusters: 238 / 576 Beverly Hills Cop: 234 / 547 Batman: 251 / 513 Back to the Future: 210 / 481 Aladdin: 217 / 427 The Lost World: 229 / 406 Monsters Inc: 289 /
Jake Gittes
Exorcist adjusted boggles the mind. Will there ever be another R-rated horror film that sells even 25% of its tickets?
Ezen Baklattan
My Big Fat Greek Wedding had a truly insane run. I'm not sure if we're ever going to see something like it again. Instructions Not Included was probably the closest we came, and even that missed $50m.
