Yup, easily my favorite film of last year by far.

An all timer for horror as far as I'm concerned. It dresses itself up with monsters to reveal a story that is far scarier- a mother who resents the birth of her child.

It's so annoying how much my friend's entire family hated it. We all watched it together (this was him, three siblings, mom and dad, and grandparents - all DESPISED IT). 

 

They much prefer Annabelle and other shit.

The Babadook features some strong performances and excellent atmosphere, especially during the first half of the film. It’s never particularly scary or unsettling, but as a look at the horrors of domestic life, it’s quite powerful in its cringe comedy elements. However, once the film leans more into horror tropes, it loses its way, feeling like a much lesser version of a film we’ve seen several times before. The Babadook might amuse for a part of its runtime, but by the end, it’ll be one bedtime story you would’ve been glad to leave on the shelf thanks to its reliance on tropes and a confused message. D+
