IMO, and as @JJ-8 mentioned, the reason this game was born was to stop people from claiming they knew a film would be a hit or a failure AFTER it came out.  The preseason stuff should always have more weight than the weekly questions.  I was never as organized as Chas and Jajang, but I tried to make preseason points worth at least double what the weekly questions were worth.  The weekly stuff is there to keep the game relevant throughout the summer.  But your preseason predictions should always be worth more.  I didn't look at the preseason questions this year, but I know at times the preseason questions have gotten out of hand in the winter games....and me and @chasmmi have spoken about this.  The amount of preseason questions and degree of difficulty sometimes made it difficult to do them all.  But beyond that, I think your top 15 and WW and OW and so on, should always be worth the most.

I'm not disagreeing that the preseason should carry a lot of weight, but the degree is kind of overwhelming, considering the amount of effort required to play the game, every week. I mean, I had an exceedingly poor preseason, but it was still was worth (slightly) more than my combined weekly and SOTM score. For Wrath, his preseason was about three times the combined value of his weeklies and SOTMs.

True, but my score was a serious outlier. I managed the weird feat of doing great on the pre-season while genuinely sucking at the weeklies and SOTM. Its kind of amazing, really, how my insight into box office success declined as we got closer to the release dates.

 

Eliminating the last few folks off the list, the average person's pre-season score was 1.7-1.8 times their combined Weeklies + SoTMs. But there's an incredibly wide range. My 2.8 multiplier isn't really that much farther away from the mean than the bottom score of 1.0, and there were at least 4 other people who also managed over a 2.0. And I've certainly seen this go the other way. Iirc, two years ago when I first played the summer game, I was maybe 8th (barely in the top 10) after weeklies and SotM's, and my pre-season questions bounced me to 21st. Sometimes you're the windshield, sometimes you're the bug.

 

That having been said, I don't really have a problem with slightly shifting down the weight of the pre-season scores. Maybe knock off a handful of questions and some of the top 15 bonus categories? I dunno. 

 

Honestly, whatever Chasmmi and JJ-8 feel like doing sounds good to me.

Since we're all contributing our two cents, I'd actually be happy with reducing the amount of weekly activity. It's a lot of work to do weeklies with SOTMs almost every week as well -- particularly when some of the bonuses deal with placements below 12th. And while I know that separates the dedicated player from the more casual ones, I know there are people interested in playing but they feel overwhelmed by the amount of work it takes.

 

IMO, I'd be fine with the same amount of weeklies/SOTMs if some of the more esoteric bonuses were pulled back a touch... and I think the Oscar question starts to dabble heavily in non-box-office trends (since not only do we need to predict grosses for the movies, but then predict their reception within the Academy). I know that's not a factor for the Summer Game, of course.

 

Maybe a way to give the weeklies more of a heft would be to increase bonuses for some of the placement questions (sections 2 & 3) as well as increasing bonuses either for the harder individual questions or for the overall number of correct questions.

Wondering if the Fantastic Beast was going to beat Dr. Strange was one of the highlights of the game for me.

 

It meant the difference between me getting the top 5 correct and winning hundreds of thousands of points or Tele and Wrath winning those points.

 

Even though I ended up getting the short end of the stick, it was an incredible moment.

I agree completely. There was real drama with how the top five WW played out.

 

And in the last days/weeks of the game, there was a bunch of drama seeing if HACKSAW could hang on to a top 15 spot (it couldn't).

I take full responsibility for the weekly stuff getting out of hand.  It started off so innocently and then the weekly and SOTM stuff got out of hand.  I personally felt overwhelmed with all of it and it's one of the reasons I stepped down.  IMHO (it's not my game anymore but I'm happy to consult with anyone who wants my opinion), the preseason stuff has gotten too big as well, not drastically, but a tiny bit.  I look at the game like most of you look at a 2.5 hour Transformers film.  It could be trimmed by about 30 minutes and it would be that much better...and you guys know how I feel about Transformers....i love those movies.....just like I love this game.  You also have no idea how much effort is given by JJ and Chas.  It's a huge task to run this game.  So whatever they do, is ultimately how the game will be played.  It's their rules and their game.

Don't forget that we use the winter game as a test bed for ideas which could be incorporated in the more prestigious summer game. Not taking any less away from how hard the winter game is btw.

I have an idea to spice things up: Every week a different person makes a different weekly and a different SOTM

My thoughts is to keep weeklies but other than specific weeks, we limit the # of questions and points. More so than previous. 

 

Also SOTMs go back to being occasional and not due every week. Lol

Also anyone complaining about SOTM and Weekly points not being as heavily weighted as preseasons, I believe there were about 3,000,000 points up for grabs in SOTMs alone this winter. 

 

And weeklies also could have got you a total of about 2.3Million.

 

That is over 5 million points right there.
