Indonesia Box Office 2023 - thanks for updating

This week Indonesia begins "official" recovery by showing new films.

Unfortunately none of them are strong ones, so we will have to wait until WW84 (16 Dec) and local horror Asih 2 (24 Dec).

Wonder Woman 1984 opens tomorrow.

Only about 50% locations will be open, each with 50% capacity.

So we're effectively only looking at 25% of market potential here.

Wonder Woman 1984 was a glimmer of hope ...... that faded quickly.

A promising opening day, and then it simply crashed and burned.

 

Next up:

24 Dec - local tentpoles Asih 2 (sequel of 1.7mil-adm Asih) and Melankolia (from the studio Visinema who are recently gaining massive popularity)

31 Dec - reissue of Mariposa, an extended version of blockbuster Milea (3.1mil adm), and The New Mutants

6 Jan - Demon Slayer: Mugen Train (first ever nationwide release - all major chains for an anime title), Honest Thief

What is the expectation for DS there? I know there is a leaked version on internet but I hope the movie will do well because Indonesia is a big developing market.....

Totally unpredictable. Like I said, this is the first time that an anime movie is released by all major chains.

Unfortunately, it comes during this very very hard times. Less than 55% locations open, 50% capacity restrictions, 3 to 4 daily shows instead of 5 to 6, three major cities still shuttered. All that plus ever-rising COVID numbers, the debate over quality of the vaccine .... it's a distracted nation.

Even Wonder Woman 1984 failed to navigate these troubled waters.

So I wouldn't put any burden on Demon Slayer.

 

 

Note:

Latest anime success was One PIece: Stampede (410k admission)

Also there's Stand By Me Doraemon's 1 million admission from way way back.

Demon Slayer alone ? I suppose should be 300k plus atleast.

Raya had a rather lifeless first 4-days with less than 60k admission.

That's about what WW84 did in one day.

Raya OW = 73k admission.

GVK doing very well, but ...

 

- less than 55% screens open

- 50% capacity limit

- daily showtime limit (3 to 4)

- average ticket price down 30% from pre-pandemic

 

Looking at $1-1.2M opening week

PROBABLY as high as $1.44M but that includes a fair amount of wishful thinking from my side.

 

That is about the best that we can do right now.

My (cautious) estimates for GVK:

 

$742-816K first week

$1.42-1.56M second week

 

By end of today it will be the #1 movie during the whole pandemic period.

Has a shot at 1mil admission.
