Builds up a wonderful atmosphere, this is a dark comedy that works most of the time.

It's a different movie from the 1971 movie for sure, and that movie was slightly better than this version, but the new one is an interesting change of pace for Sofia Coppola, if not an entirely successful one (the more understated and character-driven nature of the first two thirds of the film fare much better than the last third where it goes into darker territory, which is probably a testament to where Coppola's strengths as a filmmaker really are). But it's well-made (lots of great shots throughout) and the great cast is at the top of their game: Colin Farrell is excellent in a part in which his character's real nature is always in question and Nicole Kidman gives off the perfect balance between warmth and frigidness, while Kirsten Dunst and Elle Fanning are also very good in smaller but significant roles. Even though it doesn't surpass the earlier movie, this does make for an interesting companion piece to watch back-to-back to see what the strengths and weaknesses of each version are. B

Great performances (particularly by Kidman, what a roll she's on) can't overcome the movie's script, pacing and tonal issues. I wish it had explored the themes of sexual repression and manipulation more fully.

I don't think it goes quite far enough into the territory it's trying to explore, but Kidman alone is worth the price of admission, and it's still a fun ride.

Great cast, tight atmosphere, and gorgeous cinematography. One of my favorite movies of the year.

hahaha very random film. I like how the corporal's fate is constantly up in the air the entire time and all the plots that develop along the way.   I feel I could watch this, Fences, and August: Osage County and have a good day watching film.  Also, Colin Farrell's second interesting role after The Lobster.

Hated just about everything about this movie, far too slow for my liking with absolutely zero suspense and one-dimensional characters. Just all in all disappointed since I like Sofia Coppola.
