INDIE FILMMAKING DUO SET FOR 'SILENT HILL' FILM REBOOT

After a bidding war which seemed to come to a stalemate, Red Crescent Pictures and Lager Films have come to a deal in which they will share film rights to the Silent Hill video game franchise. Exact details of the deal have not been made public, but Red Crescent is moving ahead with an as-yet-untitled reboot of the property for release in December of Y3. Xander Newton, head of Red Crescent Pictures - a subdivision of TriCrescent Media - explained that he is a personal fan of the franchise and of the 2006 film, but felt it was time to start fresh.

"The thing is, the first movie was a hit, and reasonably well-received by horror audiences and by fans of the game. I loved it myself. But then Davis Films, who had the rights, took six years to get a sequel out. And they had to replace the writer and the director, and frankly, the sequel was terrible. And it was a huge flop domestically. But it did quite well overseas, so we think that there's still potential there in the property. But Revelation made an absolute mess of the continuity and of the mythology, and we're not interested in cleaning that up, so we're starting over."

Christophe Gans, who directed the 2006 film, is directing another horror picture for Red Crescent - Under, which was delayed from its intended Year 2 release into early Year 3. Newton has confirmed his work on Silent Hill is what got Gans that assignment. However, he explains he never offered the job of directing the new Silent Hill to him.

"The thing is, firstly, he's busy with Under and we don't want to delay the movie, or to rush him and burn him out. But also, we feel like he had a very strong vision for his film, and that we don't want to have him to have to undo what he did with the original. Since we're starting over, we want to take a different approach and get a new take on it."

The studio has hired up-and-coming independent filmmaking duo Jeremy Gillespie and Steven Kostanski to helm the new film. The pair have worked behind the scenes in the industry for over a decade, and in fact Kostanski worked as a makeup effects artist on the 2012 sequel Silent Hill: Revelation. He also has makeup work credits on Resident Evil: RetributionCrimson Peak, and Suicide Squad, which won an Academy Award for its makeup. Meanwhile, Gillespie has filled art department roles on films such as Pacific Rim, the remakes of  RoboCop and Poltergeist, and Suicide Squad.

"Their work in art and makeup has given them a great visual sensibility, especially for horror. They've both worked with Guillermo del Toro and on major horror franchises," Newton explains. "What really brought them to my attention, though, was The Void."

The Void was the pair's second feature as co-directors, following the 2011 action-comedy Father's Day. Crowdfunded through Indiegogo, the film was a retro body horror film set in a hospital under siege by a cult which transforms people into inhuman monstrosities. It was heavily influenced by 80s horror films such as John Carpenter's The Thing and Prince of Darkness and Clive Barker's Hellraiser. The movie premiered at the 2016 Fantastic Fest and went on to play the festival circuit, picking up the Jury Award for Best Feature at the Nevermore Film Festival.

"I watched the movie on Netflix," Newton explains, "and about two-thirds of the way through I literally thought to myself, before we even had the franchise rights, 'these guys would be perfect for a Silent Hill movie.'"

Gillespie and Kostanski took on other duties for The Void besides directing. The pair also wrote the script, and Gillespie worked as a production designer. Newton says that the script is currently in its early stages and not being written by the duo, but says it's likely they'll be allowed to make their own changes later on in pre-production. Exact script details are unknown at the time, but Newton was willing to provide some insight.

"It's a reboot, and it's based on the first game again, but it's not a remake of the Gans film and it's not a straight adaptation of the game. The first movie was pretty loosely based on the original story and it incorporated a lot of original ideas, and some ideas from the game sequels. So the direction we're going with the script right now is similar to how they did The Towering Inferno over at Gold Crescent. We're trying to set it apart. So basically, except for the absolute core elements, the stuff from the game that was already in Gans' movie is being avoided or downplayed. And then some of the stuff from the game that wasn't used the first time is being emphasized. But to fill in the gaps, we've got new material as well. The idea is that it's almost a companion piece - we don't want to be a retread, we don't want it to feel 'been-there-done-that.' Because that isn't scary."

Thanks to major oscar buzz, select showings of THE PARVELLI REUNION in NY/LA this January will be performed with a live orchestration of Desplat’s score.

The score, recalling the feel of classical music with quietly (and sometimes not so quietly) intense rhythms and tone, is a hopeful candidate for Best Original Score at the Oscars.

8. Hive Hangout – 4:09 (This track is heavily influence by futuristic synth pop dance music, with a wild kinetic beat that showcases the hedonistic scene of the Hive, and the track slowly fades out into a slight contest of wills between Jensen’s theme and Tong’s motif, a short Asian-influenced series of string notes)

14. Tyrant’s Test- 4:41 (Zhao’s theme, which had previously featured in other scenes of the film, has an appearance here, very Asian driven strings and percussion, before the music segues into a recurrence of Namir’s motif, and then heavy action music showcasing the physical and grueling hand to hand fight between Jensen and Namir

15. The Veil Drops – 3:02 (Adam and Megan’s relationship theme recurs here, though more dark and twisted as Megan drops the charade and lets Jensen in on the big picture. The track closes with a mournful rendition of Jensen’s theme)

16. Panic at Panchaea – 7:17 (The dark version of Darrow’s theme kicks off, followed by synth-driven action music, and ominous wanderings and ambience. The track then skips to Jensen’s theme contending against Darrow’s, followed by the interruption of Zhao’s theme. Dramatic synth music slowly builds to a peak, and then collapses into a final few soft notes as Zhao falls.

17. What Now? – 3:30 (The final track of the movie proper starts off with a mournful version of the Sarif industries theme as the survivors evacuate Panchaea. It then shifts into a rendition of Jensen and Malik’s romance theme as the two ponder where things go from here, before concluding with a peaking flair of the film’s main theme)

18. The Revolution Begins [End Credit Suite] – 7:55 (The end credits suite, which has recurrences of the main theme, Jensen’s theme, the love theme, and the Sarif Industries theme. The track concludes with a low, slightly warped variation of Zhao’s themes with the Asian influence stripped, hinting that while she has fallen, the organization she works for remains)
