SLAM!
@CayomMagazine The film review publication Slam! Movie Reviews is announcing an update to their scoring system that will go into effect for Y8 and onward. The new scores will be as follows: 5/5 - Exceptional 4.5/5 - Great 4/5 - Good 3.5/5 - Good, But Conventional 3/5 - Okay 2.5/5 - Hollow 2/5 - Stale 1.5/5 - "Not Up To Snuff" 1/5 - Bad 0.5/5 - Inept 0/5 - Offensive Scores with ".25" or ".75" will not be possible under the new system. Slam! Movie Reviews seeks to manage the amount of positive review scores given by the publication after a consecutive pattern of overly generous review scores has caused controversy with audiences who actually see these movies in theaters. "We want to remind filmmakers that there's no such thing as failure in CAYOM," said an executive. "There is only such thing as growth and advancement--it's writing practice, after all. We also believe that failure can only be found in not trying at all." Slam! Movie Reviews wishes readers a happy 4th of July.

YM!
@cayommagazine Endless Animation greenlights 2 originals between the Y8 to Y11 schedule as Super Mario Galaxy has been pushed back to Y10, apparently rumored to be pulled from the schedule completely. The first is titled Soulmates, a fantasy musical as debut director Yvett Merino Flores (Encanto, Zootopia) as Jennifer Lee (Frozen) co-directs. Soulmates takes place in a fantasy kingdom of Alvos, the home of the headstrong and compassionate Princess Valencia (Jenna Ortega) who just isn’t into romance. At the age of 17, every boy and girl in the kingdom is assigned a soulmate to complete them perfectly, that they’ll be with forever. Valencia ends up getting assigned the vain ladykiller Prince Cassius (Asher Angel) of a neighboring kingdom. Naturally, the two despise each other but to make matters work when the two learn that the soulmate process is actually of magical nature and a larger conspiracy at whole, the two are forced to work together in order to break the curse as they travel into the wilderness to find one of the creators behind this spell; the despicable and fabulous witch Morgucia (Todrick Hall) before they forcibly fall in love. Osnat Shruer (Moana) will produce the project alongside Clark Spencer (Big Hero 6) as Sofia Álvarez (To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before) writes the script with Jennifer Lee (Frozen). Lin Manuel Miranda (Moana, Hamilton) teams up once again with Alan Menken (Moana, The Little Mermaid) to develop the songs. Soulmates will be Endless Animation’s first all traditionally animated film. Endless Animation has also hired many Broadway alumni as well as singers for the cast. Andrew Barth Feldman Jason Derulo Lin Manuel Miranda Mandy Gonzalez Michael McCarty Adam Jacobs and Gael Garcia Barnel The second is You Only Live Nine Lives, a comedy with Hitchcock esque thrills. Shade (Julian Dennison) is a feisty yet pampered housecat who longs to outside and fight, living the no rules lifestyle. When his owners (our rather his pets) leave on vacation, he’s presented the opportunity of freedom. However, Shade gets lost and winds up in the mean streets of the big city, as he winds up completely outclassed by bigger animals. Shade winds up former an unlikely and reluctant partnership with a young mouse Aubrey (Quvenzhane Wallis) as she agrees to help him get stronger while he agrees to with her to some jobs for her in Little Rodenia, a city of rodents hidden downtown to make enough money to roam away. The two soon find themselves wrapped up in the animal crime world as cat and mouse will have to work together if they want to save their own furry hides. Don Hall (Winnie The Pooh) and Jared Bush (Zootopia) have been hired to write and direct the project. You Only Live Nine Lives will be done in computer animation but reportedly won’t use the Worldmeander software, despite that reports says the animation will be highly stylized, calling it similar to the feel of a comic book. cookie
1973. Sergeant Neil Howie travels to the remote British isle of Summerisle to investigate the disappearance of a young girl. He would repeatedly report back to the mainland his increasing suspicion that the inhabitants of Summerisle were involved in the girl's disappearance, as well as expressing his disgust of their apparent belief in Celtic paganism. Howie is never heard from again after his final report. A police investigation reveals no traces of his whereabouts, and little evidence that the Summerisle inhabitants engaged in any acts of paganism described in Howie's reports. All that remains is the charred remains of a wickerman effigy, with no Summerisle resident ever coming forward to claim responsibility for its creation and eventual torching. Over the next fourty-seven years, Summerisle would fade into obscurity, the inhabitants themselves disappearing under mysterious circumstances sometime in the late 1970s — But the tale of Neil Howie and his supposed encounter with the wickerman has become legend in the northern British isles, and wickerman effigies have become popular staples of music festivals and other tourist attractions. One of those attractions is a full scale replica of the wickerman located in the outskirts of Leffield, Scotland. Local tale has it this wickerman is built from the remains of the original, and it carries a curse that would wreak havoc on Leffield should it ever be set ablaze. Believing the legends, some locals have gone to great lengths to protect the wickerman from being set aflame by vandals, and stories of said locals going to morbid lengths to punish those who've tried have flown about. 2020. The Isles are reeling from the effects of both Brexit and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Tourism in Leffield has dropped sharply, and the remote town is on the brink of bankruptcy. Local policeman Leigh Waxman, a distant relative to the famed Howie, does everything in his power to keep his struggling precinct afloat while battling demons of the more personal kind, a clinically diagnosed delusional disorder since childhood. With those aware of his relation to Howie often taunting him, Leigh has long sworn off wanting anything to do with the wickerman tale, whether he believes in the curse or not — But when local councilmen suggest actually setting the effigy ablaze during the Halloween celebrations in a last ditch effort to attract tourism to the area, the debate sets off a chain of strange happenstances and disappearances, forcing Leigh and the rest of his precinct to confront the matter firsthand. Is the wickerman curse real, or is it just a series of peculiar coincidences? Will Leigh's delusions hinder his investigation, and will the legend of the curse sever his ability to tell what's real and what's not? And is the town of Leffield hiding something deeper than any single individual could have knowledge of? With Leffield at the brink of ruin and the end of October fast approaching, the time for the Wicker Man to rise again may soon be nigh. cookie
Cookie Pictures Animation announces "Everything We Miss" from 'Hilda' author, releasing in Y8 Have you ever wondered what goes on in your life when you’re looking the other way? Perhaps you’re so drawn into what’s going on with you that you fail to notice the events taking place to your periphery—or even right under your nose? In Everything We Miss, Luke Pearson explored the dying days of a failing relationship through the infinitesimal unseen moments that surround it—and us. Now, after the critical and commercial success of Year 7's Hilda and the Midnight Giant, Cookie Pictures Animation is tackling Pearson's one-shot 2011 comic as an experimental animated feature film, directed by The Red Turtle helmer Michaël Dudok de Wit and releasing in a limited run on November 1st, Y8 followed by a nationwide release on November 27th. Dutch-born animator Dudok de Wit was nominated for an Academy award for The Red Turtle in 2016, and he has previously worked on storyboarding Disney animated films like Beauty and the Beast and Fantasia 2000. Everything We Miss will be the first animated film from the Cookie Pictures Group to receive an R-rating, and is part of an initiative accompanied by Panthera and The Legend of Zelda: Secret of the Guardians to expand and diversify the studio's portfolio in Year 8. Produced at a budget of $17.5 million, it'll also be the studio's smallest work, allowing it to emphasize the stranger and more esoteric aspects of the graphic novel. George McKay ('1917') and Imogen Poots ('Green Room') voice the film's two focal characters, Will and Anna. Famed actor James McAvoy ('Fatal Attraction') will provide the film's narration, translating and expanding on the narration featured in the original novel. "We have a good working relationship with Pearson and we wanted to do something different than most animated films on the market, and Everything We Miss was right there," Cookie Pictures President and CEO Sebastian Peters explained, described the film as aiming for the adult art-house market over traditional family or action-oriented fare. "With films like Laika currently heaping a lot of praise and even commercial success, a market for more experimental fare is brewing under the wider revolution in the CAYOM animation scene, and I think Everything We Miss is going to be another fresh addition to an already large line-up of animated films looking to release next year, such as Wanderer, Panthera, My Hero Academia, Zelda, Dog Man, Where? and hopefully many others." Peters describes the film as "highly esoteric" and tackles harsher subject matter while still inhabiting some of that bizarre wonder found in 'Hilda' and Pearson's other work. In a surprise move, Cookie Pictures has announced that production is already finished on Everything We Miss. As stated, the film will debut in limited theaters on November 1st, and slowly expand nationwide until November 27th. "I know the risks, Alfur, but this is something I have to do." "Hilda... there's nothing you 'have' to do." ------ "Some are calling it the 'Beast of Trollberg,' or 'The Black Hound.'" ------ "Have you ever known what it's like to be scared, and I mean... really scared? You want to find out?" ------ "Hilda..." "Mum, I... I didn't mean for this to happen..." "...What have you brought home?" Hilda will return Y9 Spoiler Spoiler After announcing Everything We Miss from Hilda author Luke Pearson earlier this week, Cookie Pictures Animation has confirmed this evening that, unsurprisingly, a Hilda and the Midnight Giant followup is in development for a late Y9 release, aiming for the holiday period. The new film, whose title and plot are being kept under wraps for now, will have a "darker" and "more emotionally heavy" tone compared to its predecessor, according to Cookie Pictures President and CEO Sebastian Peters. "We threw around a lot of ideas for what the continuation of Hilda's journey would look like," Peters explained when going over the development process. "We think with Midnight Giant being about accepting that things aren't always going stay the way they are, and realizing that there is real danger in the world around you, the second film is even more of a coming-of-age tale than its predecessor, and being about actually being forced to confront with topics and scenarios someone of Hilda’s age normally wouldn't be prepared for. As to what those topics are, that we can't say here today." The 'Hilda' follow-up will be co-directed by Dana Terrace (DuckTales, The Owl House) and Patrick McHale (Adventure Time, Over the Garden Wall). Both Terrace and McHale had previously been attached to other Cookie Pictures Animation projects. Pixie Davies (Mary Poppins Returns), Michelle Dockery (Downton Abbey), Himesh Patel (Yesterday), Rhianna Dorris (The Kid Who Would Be King) and Roman Griffin Davis (Jojo Rabbit) will return as Hilda, Johanna, Alfur, Frida and David respectively. Frida and David, who both had very limited roles in Midnight Giant, will have greatly expanded precense in the follow-up as Hilda's new set of friends. Alex Hirsch (Gravity Falls, Starlight), Ashley Johnson (Sylvarius, The Last of Us), Mark Hamill (Star Wars, The Ends of the Universe) and Jude Law (Cold Mountain, The Rich and Famous) round up the film's additions to the cast. Their roles are yet to be disclosed, but Peters has hinted that at least both Hamill and Law will turn up as antagonists in the story. While, as repeatedly stated, much information can't be shared as of yet, Peters is closing out with a little tidbit; "norse mythology will play a not insignificant role in the proceedings. Read into that as you might." Also, Peters confirmed that Twig will return. The Hilda sequel is aiming for release in late Y9. Further details will be shared in Y8.
