April 2-4 (Easter): Veggies makes it ‘Rain’, ‘Fans’ suffer ‘Miserable’ opening on Easter weekend

In a surprise upset, ‘Veggies in the Rain’ bested ‘Miserable Fans’ as the top newcomer of the week, though neither film managed to usurp ‘Artifacts’ from the top spot, making it its second weekend atop the chart. ‘Veggies’ managed to pull a near $20 million take this Easter weekend. While the animated film was unable to claim the top spot, it did make a strong showing on Easter sunday, finishing in first place. The film scored an A from audiences who saw it. The film should play fairly well for the rest of the month given the lack of any animated films until Two Lonely Bounty Hunters on May 6th. Meanwhile, ‘Miserable Fans’ opened to a lackluster $13.9 million opening. Considering the film’s $45 million price tag, it will need strongholds in the following weeks in order to gain back any traction its already lost. The film scored a B- with audiences.

1. Artifacts: Zephyr's Crest - $23,478,948 (2nd week) (-48.4%)

2. Veggies in the Rain: A VeggieTales Movie - $19,993,289 (1st week)

3. The Epsilon Syndicate: Union of Thieves - $19,141,072 (3rd week) (-34.1%)

9. Out of My Mind - $2,034,916 (5th week) (-36.8%)

10. The Mona Lisa - $1,937,703 (6th week) (-41.1%)

April 9-11: ‘Steel Streaks’ crosses the box office finish line

Gold Crescent Pictures’ ‘Steel Streaks’ easily managed to win the top spot on its opening weekend, posting a solid $40.2 million opening. The Sci-Fi action pick was able to open at the high end of expectations thanks to a strong critical reception and word of mouth. Those who saw the film gave it an A- cinemascore. The film should hold fairly well for until the end of the month when ‘Green Lantern Corps’ arrives. Meanwhile, Infinite Studios’ nature documentary ‘Birds’ pulled in $4.6 million in its opening weekend. The doc posted an A- cinemascore from those who saw it.

1. Steel Streaks - $40,230,544 (1st week)

2. Artifacts: Zephyr’s Crest - $14,610,443 (3rd week) (-37.8%)

April 16-18: ‘Steel Streak’ finishes in first in photo finish

The race to the top was a close one this weekend with ‘Steel Streaks’ coming out on top for a second weekend in a row against the Sam Raimi 3D horror film ‘Deeper’, which posted a solid $25.3 million opening weekend. While ‘Deeper’ managed to score the #1 spot on its opening day, ‘Steel Streaks’ managed to take back the throne on Saturday and Sunday. The horror pic received a C cinemascore from audiences.

1. Steel Streaks - $25,828,009 (2nd week) (-35.8%)

April 23-25: ‘Best Friends’ across the box office in yet another photo finish

Similar to last weekend, the top 2 spots ended up being a photo finish between ‘Steel Streaks’ and ‘Best Friends’, with the latter managing to take the top spot. The comedy film managed to end up on the high end of expectations, finishing with $17.9 million. Thanks to solid reviews and a lack of competition, the Channing Tatum/Aaron Paul comedy vehicle, which scored an A- cinemascore from audiences, should continue to play well for the coming weeks. Meanwhile, ahead of its opening weekend, ‘Green Lantern Corps: Rise of the Manhunters’ screened for Amazon Prime members for one day only Saturday, getting a head start with $3.5 million.

1. Best Friends - $17,872,995 (1st week)

April 30-May 2: ‘Lanterns’ ‘Rise’ to the top

Scoring the first $100 million opening of the year, ‘Green Lantern Corps’ managed to rise to the top to effectively kick off the summer season, posting $106.3 million in its opening weekend ($109.8 million with the added Amazon Prime showing last weekend). The comic book film, based on the DC comics, managed to overcome the stigma of the 2011 Green Lantern, nearly out grossing that film’s $116.6 domestic run. Thanks to strong reviews (72 on Metacritic) and a positive A cinemascore from audiences, the film managed to avoid that fate, something Endless Entertainment can breathe a sigh of relief for as plans of a sequel are already underway. The film should play well through the summer–at least after next weekend is gone and over with.

1. Green Lantern Corps: Rise of the Manhunters - $106,273,572 (1st week)

2. Best Friends - $11,556,828 (2nd week) (-35.3%)

9. Birds - $1,303,635 (4th week) (-46.6%)

10. Miserable Fans - $1,229,725 (5th week) (-46.9%)

Also yay for GLC. I’m so happy it is doing well, and I think it may reach $300M even with 2LBH.

On another note: I’ve got to say I’ve learned a lot regarding reviews for it and will try to improve for the sequels

The Drowsy Chaperone legs it to $100M

Call of Duty 2 has a slight increase to a $65M/$180M run
