Movie

On par with Into Darkness, although neither of the sequels have been able to hold a candle to the enormous delights of the '09 reboot. This is still an immensely entertaining adventure even if it just feels more like an extended episode devoid of actual stakes, and Justin Lin assumes the mantle from J.J. Abrams in a seamless fashion to the point where even the most discerning moviegoer wouldn't sense a change behind the scenes.

The best thing about these movies is definitely the impeccably-assembled cast. Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, and Karl Urban have made undeniable long-lasting impressions in these iconic roles, although Zoe Saldana is unfortunately shortchanged in this one compared to the previous movies. Sofia Boutella's Jaylah is a terrifically badass heroine who will hopefully become part of the team in the next movie. Too bad the script makes the crucial mistake of saddling the ever-charismatic Idris Elba with a weak villain role that requires him to be rendered unrecognizable by a goofy mask (I also wasn't a fan of the twist involving his character either).

Unfortunately, the movie also comes with unintended poignancy due to Anton Yelchin, one of the most promising actors of his generation whose death in a horrific freak accident last month is still difficult to process. What a remarkable young talent. Such a devastating loss.

Crowd Reaction

Audience was pretty into it for the most part, laughs at most of Bones' lines, etc. Applause when the end credits began and a huge portion stayed until the Nimoy/Anton dedications.

Theater was super busy tonight.

Lights Out

30% full, 9:40 show

Trailers: - Ouija: Origin of Evil (laughs)

- Don't Breathe (a few looks good)

- War Dogs (no reaction)

- Suicide Squad (a lot of TOTALLY SEEING THIS)

Good movie, I enjoyed it. Not as scary as I had hoped, had potential for a lot more scares. But as a film it was well done, the characters and story are compelling, the acting is good, and there is a true sense of "I really have no idea how this will end". Audience reaction wasn't exactly over the top, but there were the odd screams at the appropriate parts, laughs after those screams, and a lot of "RIP dude, what did I say about opening the door"

Those are a weird mix of trailers to play in front of a film like this. I would have thought Girl on The Train, Bridget Jones Baby, Keeping Up With the Joneses, etc

Quebec movie theaters for ya...

I was predicting that the trailer for it would be Edge of Seventeen, Space Between us, Office Christmas Party, Masterminds, Bridget Jones's Baby, La La Land, and Keeping up with the Joneses, but I wasn't anticipating seeing it here in Quebec.

Trailers (arrived late)

Sing

The Magnificent Seven

One guy thought this was the funniest movie ever. A couple of other people were laughing a lot and some Harley stuff got big laughs. Same with a couple of Will Smith's one-liners caused HUGE laughs. Everyone stayed for the after credits scene but there was no applause.

Moana

Bridget Jones's Baby (trailer #1, small laughs)

Sully

Trolls (trailer #1, small chuckles)

Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk (excited whispers)

Inferno (trailer #1)

Lots of laughter throughout, but what surprised me the most was there was applause at the end of the movie.  It's nearly a month in release on a Wednesday, in a theater with like 15-20 people in it, and there's applause.

Sausage Party

August 12, 11:30 PM, 35% full

AMC Yorktown, Lombard, IL

Trailers:

The Edge of Seventeen (Chuckles)

Hell or High Water

Why Him? (Some real laughter)

Sully

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (a lot of whooping and three screams)

War Dogs (some chuckles)

A fair amount of laughter throughout, not as much as I was expecting. The middle part (IMO) definitely sagged and a lot of the film didn't feel very funny at all. Most of the laughter came at the orgy scene at the end, because it was so over the top and ridiculous.
