I'm really disappointed in "critics" these days. Why aren't more coming to this film's defense? They gave every MCU movie a pass for a decade or more, but can't give genuinely creative and risky CBMs any slack? Critics seem to just push what the masses want, when they are supposed to be above that.

A few weeks prior to Joker 2, The Penguin had rave reviews and is far removed from the typical CBM. Execution matters.

A Batman villian show told like the Godfather. They even have a villian that looks like Connie Corleone. Mind blown.

Lol the DC official page on X posted about the filming being complete. As much as the fanboys like to act that it's not DC now, it's a DC product using the IP and its characters.

Again, no one said it’s not based on DC characters. The point is that everyone in Hollywood has made a point of saying that it was made independently of DC Studios, and Phillips seemingly had free rein to do what he wanted. I also don’t see how it can be called a “toy commercial”, when it doesn’t seem like it was made with merchandise in mind.

The Penguin is not experimental art film, it has accessible and understandable template like The Sopranos, Scarface and other gangster stuff, just with DC skin.

Look I just use  “nostalgic toy commercial” as a good catch-all term for most tentpoles lol. If you have a better term, lemme know.

Neither is the first Joker experimental and it was also a run of the mill drama with DC skin and it also got pretty good reviews.

That's what I'm saying, both first Joker and The Penguin have recognizable and accessible templates that largely work for audiences, first Joker was made under the studio supervision.

I mean, if he's gonna immolate his career, doing an Ultimate Warrior biopic would be more interesting than a Hogan one. The Warrior Christmas comic is right about where Phillips "sensibility" lies.

Oh god no. Not the ultimate warrior Christmas comic

Honestly this whole ordeal is so depressing. Reminiscent of normies bullying the "weird" kid in school just because they are different.

Just being different does not mean being good.

I am glad that Philips had a chance to try something different in CBM's, but it did not turn out very well.

I do not give a shit about a filmmakers intentions, all I care about is what is on the screen. And Joker 2 was not a good film.

And I think the same about Megalopolis, and I am a pretty big Coppola fan.

THIS.THIS.THIS.

Critics are not coming to Joker 2' defenses because the critics think it is not a good movie.

It is not enough to be different,. you also have to be good.

This whole judging a movie by the filmmakers intentions rahter then what we see on the screen is bullshit, frankly.

I saw an Interview with Matt Reeves interview and the inevitable 'What are you favorite films" question was asked, and first film he named was "The Godfather", So no big surprise he would choose to make a Mafia movie within the DC Universe. The nice thing is the Batman comics set it up perfectly.

And, yeah, I don't think the Sofia Falcone  looks like an evil Connie Corleone is a coincidence.

I disagree. Doing something unconventional and different in a genre should always be given more slack compared to a by-the-numbers formula.

Bullshit.

The only thing that matters is what is on  the screen.
