chasmmi
145th – The Cat Returns 92 points – 7 votes ( 0 top 10 ) 2013 – Not in Top 25 2014 – Not in Top 100 2016 – Not in Top 150 2018 – Not in top 100 My personal ranking – Never Seen and I picked 5 other Ghibli films to watch in the build up to this. It is time for Ghibli to make its first bow on this list with The Cat Returns. Possibly the closest thing I know of to a Ghibli sequel and also one of the most likely films for me to forget if I was challenged to name all the films of Studio Ghibli. This is the first film to make its debut on this list despite being eligible every year and this may be a sign that the easier access to non-Hollywood animation is going to affect this year’s list. 9

We are back with Disney output number 3 and it is one of the supposed shining lights of Disney’s darkest age. I have not seen this one, but I kind of suspect that if I did watch it, it would likely be middlingly received and not make my personal top 100. However, if I watched it among a binge of Brother Bear, Home on the Range, and Chicken Little (all of which I also haven’t seen), I could imagine me overly praising it because it may well seem like high art and animating glory, compared to what was released around it. As for the forum, it appears to be a film that will forever be a film that will sit in the 100-150 position range. 7

Somebody once told me, the world is gonna roll me, I ain’t the sharpest tool in the…no, no, not time for that yet. The Croods is a film that came out and was surprisingly fine. I am personally a much bigger fan of the other Dreamworks animation featuring Ryan Reynolds voice work in 2013, but I literally may be the only one. It is also a film that has steadily declined list on list here, which may be another indication that the are certain films that would have made people’s lists in 2016 as they were decent films you feel confident adding in order to top off at 50/75/100 choices, but have since been bumped down/off thanks to newer releases and easier access to previously obscure titles. 7

From the 30 seconds of this, it looked like Claymation. Was it Claymation? It was definitely French and thus slightly angers me that it did not put its foot down and make the English title, My Life as a Courgette. I think I remember this film getting Academy Award attention and apparently acquired adequate accolades ascertaining to academic ability. It is the highest rated film on this countdown to not score 100 points or more and it will remain to be seen whether it grows in popularity in 2023/4, or fades to noire. 8 1

Another film making its debut on any list, this entry was saved from 200th place obscurity by a last ditch hail mark top 5 placing that rocketed it up the standings. Quality or lack of aside, I think there is a solid argument to make that this is the most forgotten WDAS theatrical feature. Everything Else is either considered Golden Age, Dark Age, Renaissance, The True Dark ages of early 2000, the Re-Renaissance, and whatever the fuck all those Donald Duck trying to fuck Brazilian women films were. This, was something in the middle. Not a full single story feature, nor a bunch of shorts. Not groundbreaking animation, but also not reskins of previous films, or whatever the hell Chicken Little is. It is just a film that happened, was kind of fun, and seven people here remember with differing degrees of fondness.

Next time, I promise! Also, I agree about Pocahontas - it's impossible to separate from its historical context but if it were somehow purely fictional I also think it would be remembered more fondly. Breadwinner (and Kells) are definitely worth watching.
4815162342
The Cat Returns is an incredibly slight but very fun movie that is the result of (presumably) the Ghibli people all being stoned or on acid at the time they thought of the film

Yet more WDAS fare now as we get the film that dared to make us ask the question, “Would it really be completely wrong to have relations with a cartoon squirrel?” Sword in the Stone has been a mainstay of the 90-100th place bracket of every list to date and thus this is quite a drop off after half a decade of consistency. I think almost everybody has a group of 2 or 3 Disney animation that’s that decades older that they are, yet still possess strong place in one’s heart as they were the films you grew up watching 4 times a week for 5 years. I’ve probably seen Sword in the Stone easily over 100 times and thus am personally sad to see it drop. That being said, it is also true that I may not have watched it in over 20 years at this point. 9

Or is it actually the tale of a bunch of 40 year old guys that get together once every week or so to group babysit their godchildren well chatting about the ills of the world? Position wise, this felt like a film on its way up the list as it made big gains in 2016 and 2018, but it seems it has not built on that momentum this time around. 10

A real yoyo film that after a brief dalliance at making a bid for top 50 status, is now solidly outside the top 100. This film looks cute enough, it has a cool main theme song, maybe I really should give it a go some day. But… I dunno. Should I? It really looks like a film for kids (not necessarily a bad thing, but as things stand I am not currently, nor do I currently have kids). Anyhow, by my math we are 12 films in and 5 are Disney. Hard to tell if that is a good or a bad sign yet.

I have no idea what A Silent Voice is, but if in doubt, I think it is safe to assume it is set in Japan, stars high schoolers, and one of them is secretly in love with the other/ is possibly and mermaid or alien. Although not that I have said this, it’s gonna turn out to be fucking French and be the Persepolis fiasco from the Foreign Film list all over again. Making its debut as a qualifying film, this film clearly has a small but passionate fan base and as so may be something worth checking out by anybody interested in modern Japanese animation. 9

I am pretty sure that Fantastic Planet is a hobby gamer’s shop, but it seems I may be wrong. I genuinely know nothing about this film other than it briefly flirted with the top 150 list back in 2016. It feels like this is a sci-fi film and being from the 70s, I am going to stick with my guess of monsters, big bosomed people needing a rescue, and possibly a guy walking around with a giant sword in his underpants. Let’s have a look at a trailer and see… … I, um… … I wasn’t expecting that. 10

I've had A Silent Voice personally recommended to me twice (by people who know my taste) and it's been on my watchlist but ironically there's been a few times I've put it off because the strength of the recommendation makes me (edit: NOT) want to watch it when I'm stressed/tired etc. Was planning to squeeze it in for this list but didn't quite make it. Going to try and watch this very soon. Edited July 18, 2021 by Jason
chasmmi
I did a quick count and from the remaining 135 films, there are only 17 that i haven't seen. I think the film is Japanese, so that joke plot summary has a more than zero chance of being the actual plot. I remember this film being in cinemas years and years ago and it was describe as a perfectly serviceable cartoon for adults: 3 stars. (No idea why I remember this to this day). Listwise, this is a film finally making its debut on a countdown after many near dawns. Will it remain next time? 9 1

Then again is that much different to how a bunch of Disney Musicals get votes? Yes, yes it is. This is Yellow Submarine’s second appearance on a countdown after a 112th place in 2016. I think it is one of those films that is an, “Óh yeah, I could/should have thought about that one” films. It is cute enough and enjoyable, but really the main plus is that the greatest music act in history is writing and performing the soundtrack.

A film about a human single mother of werewolf children does sound interesting. Hence why I almost saw it, but in the end I got to see raccoons transform their testicles into bridges and parachutes, so you tell me who the real winner is. This seemed to be a film that was getting more and more popularity by the year as it stormed from 122nd up to 80th, but now we see another step backward to outside the top 100. If I had watched it and decided it to be the greatest animation of all time, that still would have only taken it to 102nd, so this isn’t my fault. It’s those darned testicle raccoons. 4 1

There are highs that are very fun, and lows that are very draggy (and for me let it drop outside my own 100). For me the high point was the Disney Princess stuff, but I expect to others that was the absolute nadir of the film such is subjectivity. This is also the first film to make the list that hasn’t been previously eligible for any previous list. This is very exciting as for the first time we can see how the final position measures up to my prediction… Oh. It seems I did not predict Ralph 2. Clearly Teen Titans was where it was at in my mind. – As an aside, I watched Teen Titans for this list, far and away the worst thing I watched in the past month out of 20 something films. An abomination of a film that should not exist. 6 1

It supposedly gets decent support as a film that is nice and heartfelt etc. However, I do have one counter point to that… It’s fucking Goofy! Have you heard him talk? For 90 minutes! I played Kingdom hearts 3! I lived through the trauma of Goofy and bloody Donald ejaculating important dialogue in those voices and you are powerless to do anything but listen. I can’t put myself through that again, I can’t. No. Sorry. As for its history here, This is another film that seems to be perennially in the 100-150th range. 11
