Christopher Nolan Takes ‘Oppenheimer’ On China Tour; First Major Hollywood Filmmaker To Visit Market Since Start Of Pandemic

From the Oppenheimer Beijing show, video on Weibo saw fans “clutching posters” featuring Nolan’s previous works like Inception, Interstellar and Tenet, the Global Times reported. The premiere also ignited discussions on social media, with Weibo trending topics including #Oppenheimer, #OppenheimerChinaPremiere, #NolanSigningPostersForFans. According to sources, the film has generated over 50 million views on the Weibo platform alone. The Maoyan want-to-see number also sharply increased. And that’s without ever being the number one film at the domestic box office. Warner Bros.′ record-breaking “Barbie,” which opened the same weekend as “Oppenheimer,” has held the top spot for five out the of the last six weeks. “Barbie” is the highest-grossing domestic release of the year, and is looking to eclipse Universal’s “Super Mario Bros. Movie” as the top-grossing global film in 2023.

Universal is banking on the longevity of “Oppenheimer” at the box office, as it does not plan to make the movie available on streaming until February, which falls in what’s usually the thick of Oscar campaign season. The film itself, Nolan, and stars Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr. are considered early favorites for next year’s Academy Awards

Streaming release planned for Feb next year. Its going to have a really long theatrical run. This is amazing in this age where even blockbusters release in 4 months at worst. I think only Top Gun Maverick had late streaming release in the post COVID era. 

 

This also guarantees Chris making his next movie with Universal as well.
