Russia Box Office

Recommended Posts

---> Latest figures from film industry analysts NevaFilm shows that at the end of 2010, Russia had 2,436 screens in 868 cinemas. There were 942 digital screens in 530 cinemas, 938 of which were able to project 3D.---->By 31.12.2011 2726 modern screens in 928 theaters. 1472 digital and 1434 3D. 19 IMAX.In one year Russia added 290 screens, 60 theaters and 496 3D screens, it's really impressive, only China perform better.I can't imagine in 2020 :oNo wonder the box office grows so fast.

Actually the turning point for this growth might be very close. The ticket prices are already too high. Too many wide releases with enormous screen count are killing each other. Most of the new theaters are in the same big cities. It is not very good for business to build a new theater in cities with 100-300k population.

How much are the ticket prices, 2D, 3D or IMAX?

It's pretty logic no? I mean Moscow and St Petersburg regions are growing, but many medium/small cities and rural communities are declining demographically.Theaters go where is the population and where the people salaries are the highest.

About the turning point I hope you're wrong, I'm very optimistic about this market, and not only for movies.

What about the ticket prices?

Average ticket price in Russia

2004 90 RUB = 3.25 USD

2005 105 RUB = 3.8 USD

2006 120 RUB = 4.6 USD

2007 135.4 RUB = 5.3 USD

2008 166.6 RUB = 6.7 USD

2009 169 RUB = 5.31 USD

2010 194 RUB = 6.3 USD

2011 220 RUB = 7.09 USD

Last week with Titanic and Wrath of Titans average ticket price was 242 RUB or 8.35 USD.

Generally ticket prices for 3D and IMAX might differ depending on city. Usually they are much higher in Moscow and significantly lower in provincial cities. Could be up to $13-15 for 3D and $20-23 for IMAX.

I guess millions of Russians don't have an access to theaters yet.Russia could surpass France in admissions in 2012, so Russia would become the biggest European market in admissions, and the fourth in the world after India,USA and China, very good :)

2008 135.421 mln2009 142.514 mln2010 164.786 mln2011 172.156 mln These numbers are for calendar year. Fiscal year is from December to November. Last December was very stong so actually for fiscal 2011 year admissions slightly decreased here.

Thanks :)Calendar year is ok, and these numbers are pretty good actually, about 5% growth a year..So if the trend goes on we can expect 180 million admissions, but I bet on more because this year we have Bilbo, Ice Age 4,The Avengers and Spiderman.

12 more movies with 4mln + admissionsI'm writing box office reports in Russia since 2006 and also I write for some magazines. So I can always answer questions about Russian box office. Feel free to ask.

I saw Day Watch is pretty high on that list with 7mio+ admissions, but what about Night Watch? Wasn't that a huge hit in Russia too?

Yeah, why is the jump from Dec 10- Dec 11 so much huger than the increases from Jan-Feb 11 to Jan-Mar 12?

Rather strong December with two huge local blockbusters: Vysotskiy (27.19 mln) and Yolki 2 (19.85 mln). And 5 weekends in 2011 instead of 4 in 2010 also helped very much.

It was all-time number 1 for some time with $15.9 mln. Using average ticket price it should have around 4.85 mln admissions.

I found french numbers2008 190.1 mln2009 201.1 mln2010 206.5 mln2011 215.6 mlnso the overtaking will probably not happen 2012, as the French have quite a good dynamic themselves.
