Because last 2 weekends were deflated for Good Night/Christmas Day and New Year's Eve/New Year.

It's mostly two reasons

 

1. Avatar skews older and No Way Home skewed yonger. Besides the fact that No Way Home came from an avid fanbase; older audiences tend to show up more in weekdays and younger ones as well as families in weekends. Once No Way Home burnt out its fan-rush demand it was just doing ok on weekdays. Like it happened to pretty much every major MCU entry. Avatar; as it appeals to a GA and has wom on its favour can sustain better weekdays 

 

2. Sundays are the most attended days of the week and next are Saturdays. No Way Home calendar gave it a holiday on a Saturday and then a super Sunday. Avatar only had the holiday on Sunday.

 

It's not like Avatar is completely underperforming on weekends but rather overperforming on weekdays. That's why they were more important as they were the true proof of its WOM.

If it holds then it'll be the second biggest or biggest 4th weekend ever even removing Thu ($75.8M). Coco made $76M on Fri-Sun.

 

$1.05B is the target. May even be $1.1B

From the top of my head now all first 4 weekends records belong to different titles (Fri-Sun)

 

First weekend: Avengers: Endgame ($603M)

Second weekend: Toy Story 4 ($250M)

Third weekend: Coco ($150M)

Fourth weekend: Avatar: The Way of Water ($76M)

 

I'll try to dig on more later.
