Of course...

The problem is for Cinepolis.

Cinépolis isn't having any problem because they're having a wonderful time selling 6 out of every 10 tickets for Coco and Thor: Ragnarok, Coco is stealing shine and screens to the Marvel film so that's awesome for the chain that isn't just selling-out showtimes but entire inventories of popcorn, soda and collectibles.

Universal on the other way...

- Lego Ninjago did half of what Lego Batman did on its OW

- HDD is half of what It did on its OD.

Justice League clearly isn't Lego Ninjago or HDD, but Coco is in the attention of everyone and there are places where there isn't a single Cinemex in miles, so not everyone will travel hours to see that movie when they can go 20 minutes away to see a movie that appeals to their own culture.

Justice League is another 2 weeks away. Its not as if coco will play at same pace into its 5th week. Multiplexes need big movies to stay busy. Plus why piss off a major studio that makes tons of movies. Long term they will work with other chains to add even more screens.

This has to get settled. I hope it happens before JL releases.

The problem is that in Mexico there are only two chains: Cinepolis and Cinemex; Cinemex doesn't have enough presence or "prestige" as Cinépolis, so not much choice for moviegoers. There are some other independent chains with a few complexes but not as much as them. And yeah, in some point they will get to a deal, but right now i don't think Cinépolis be at a worst position than Universal since they're already making a lot of money.

Coco breaks the record for highest 2nd weekend ever, with 206.14M lc ($10.8M)! Just to get an idea, previous holder was FF7 with 123M. Wow.

Total is up to 535.57M lc ($28M), enough for #4 of the year and #19 all time.

Thor Ragnarok is a very respectable runner up with a 201.85M lc 4-day ($10.5M). It's the highest non #1 debut.

NOVEMBER 3-5 WEEKEND. MIGUEL & DANTE AND THOR & BANNER SMASH RECORDS.

Possibly, this is the first weekend ever that we have two $100M+ grossers in the chart, and for theatres was very bussy cause of ticketing systems going down, popcorn, soda, nachos, ICEE's and candies going out of stock and entire lines that never ended. Let's breakdown one of the most crowded weekend ever.

Coco

Biggest second weekend ever beating previous holder; Maleficent by 64.2%

- Running 26.79% ahead of TS3 and 0.66% behind Minions

- #19 all-time grosser and #19 all-time by assistants

- Next week will crack the IO scenario ($625M) so is going for $700M+ If WoM keeps strong can challenge Avengers for #1 All-Time, is definitely doable

Thor: Ragnarok

- Biggest #2 debut ever

- 7th biggest 3-Day OW of the MCU

- If plays like every CBM of the year, except WW, will finish at $460M-$470M

Pokemón: Kimi ni Kimeta!

- Impressive result, on par with Kimi no na Wa. However, Pokemon was a single day release (Sun) while Kimi no na Wa played at Sat and Sun

¿Cómo Cortar a tu Patán?

- Hammered by Coco and Thor, is #21 at local films all-time chart with zero chance of joining Top 20. Still, #3 of the year behind Hazlo como Hombre and 3 Idiotas

# MOVIE WEEKEND % CHANGE TOTAL (MXN) TOTAL (USD) ADM. TOTAL ADM.
1 Coco $206,14 +16,61% $535,37 $27,91 4,1 11,01
2 Thor: Ragnarok $140,94   $201,85 $10,32 2,54 3,62
3 Geostorm $7,68 -77,67% $156,96 $8,19 156,7K 3,38
4 Happy Death's Day $6,43 -58,40% $29,9 $1,55 137,5K 690K
5 Pokemón: Kimi ni Kimeta! $4,01   $4,01 $209K 39,7K 39,7K
6 Jeepers Creepers 3 $3,73   $4,9 $255K 75,2K 98,8K
7 Vuelven $3,17   $4,14 $215K 62,6K 82K
8 Breathe $1,94   $2,61 $136K 22,6K 30,2K
9 The Big Sick $1,56   $1,98 $103K 21,7K 27,3K
10 ¿Cómo Cortar a tu Patán? $1,28 -85,53% $107,61 $5,61 22,1K 2,33

I don't get the Cinepolis situation with JL

Here in Panama Cinepolis is having previews and the movie looks normal in schedule

Why the problem is exclusive with Cinepolis Mexico?

Btw: impressive for Coco, really excited to see it

Here in Mexico the WB titles are distributed by Universal, so the problem is with them. I can't go to specifics because i really don't know much about it and there's no public info available, but some time ago a few states forced many entertainment/recreation industries including theatre chains to go down on their prices for tickets, the chains made new deals with distributors so their % per ticket won't be affected, everyone agreed except for Universal, they keep negotiating their films one by one, so that's how It and Geostorm had no issue on being released through Cinépolis, but everything went more complicated for HDD, JL and all WB/Uni films that remain to be released this year.

Oh God! Theatres across the country look packed today, twitter accounts for Cinépolis and Cinemex are full with responses to posts of people saying they're waiting in lines to buy snacks and/or tickets for even 40 minutes!

Bad services...

Could Coco become the biggest film of all time, possibly?

The odds so far are in its favour, but it'd depend on the JL vs Cinepolis battle outcome and the availability of theatres.

If it keeps performing strongly, should become the 7th movie to reach 700M lc by Sunday, anything over that is a gamble.
