Weekly figures. Moana should win the weekend, but will it perform more in lc like Tangled than like Frozen? ER would be brutal.

Weekend figures. Moana opened lower than Zootopia, Tangled, Wreck It Ralph, Frozen, Big Hero 6 and about the same as The Good Dinosaur. You get the idea, nothing too write home about. Could it have a great hold just like in the rest of Latin America, or become the first recent DA movie not to reach $10M? Meanwhile, FB passes Doctor Strange and Trolls now has grossed more than Storks.

Weekend actuals. Moana's hold is insane, don't remember seeing anything similar in ages. Decent opening by Train to BusanFB on its way out, all eyes are now on Rogue One and Diego Luna's effect.

Rogue One opened on Thu to less than $1M, 65% drop in lc and audience. If it follows TFA multiplier, weekend will be about $3.5M which would be frankly meh. However TFA was more front-loaded, so let's hope it can reach at least $5M!

Weekend estimates:

  • Rogue One opens to $5.1M, a 48% drop from TFA in lc; must have had a strong Sun. If it behaves like TFA, it would end in the $13-15M vicinity.
  • $1.6M OW for Collateral Beauty, higher than Silver Linings Playbook and Birdman.
  • Moana reaches $8.7M with another decent hold. It'd be tough to reach $10M since Sing opens next weekend.

Weekend actuals! Rogue One drop was actually 47.5% from TFA, less front-loaded and potentially better legs. However not enough to enter the yearly Top 10 OWs.

Moana had a great 3rd week drop < 50% and it's now the #24 movie of the year in lc. FB towards the end of its lifetime, may fall short of 300M lc.

There were previews for Sing (didn't know that!), they may have been very limited since it pulled low numbers. Could it emulate SLOP's success? Wonder if it'll use songs in Spanish?

Weekend figures. Christmas effect = very deep drops for everyone ... except Sing, expanding after previews, winning the weekend and climbing to $3.5M. Rogue One falls 70% for a $8.2M total. Moana has a fantastic multiplier and reaches $10M. Passengers and local movie Un padre... opened to less than $1M.

December holidays are always great for big budget family movies, and this year is not an exception: Both Sing and Moana have great weekdays. Sing is following the same strategy as SLOP with discounted tickets offers (around 20% cheaper than usual), reaching $6.5M; Moana now has a brilliant 3.8x multiplier and almost $11M total, and it's now the #20 movie of the year in lc gross and audience. On the other side, Ballerina can only muster a $138K debut.

Passengers gets close to $3M after 5 days; meanwhile, Rogue One slows down a bit, weekend's gross will be key indicator of future performance.
