10 (5) 009 RE: Cyborg (T-Joy) ¥33 million ($410,000), -52%, Week 2

Very impressive for 'The Floating Castle'. Since it opened on Friday, it's 3-day total may have exceeded ¥500 million ($6 million+ ). ¥2.5 billion ($30 million+) should be attainable, and perhaps ¥3 billion (near $40 million) is doable, too. Strong film to kick off the last month of the Box Office year that will continue with 'Lesson of the Evil' next weekend, 'Evangelion 3.0' in two weeks, and 'Crow's Thumb' at the end of the month.

Among the other openers, 'Fly with the Gold' did very well. Shochiku needed this one to over-perform.

Some rough drops for this weekend for most holdovers. Seven wide openers would have cut into the showtimes, though, and there wasn't any data for 'The Expendables 2'. It would have required a drop over 60% to fall out of the Top 10... but seeing there are a couple 50%+ drops this weekend maybe it actually did plummet, though I suspect it'll show up in the morning.

Matrix Reloaded holds the record with 2.22 billion, followed by Chamber of Secrets with 2.05 billion. I'm not sure what it'll take to beat those two seeing as how todays biggest blockbusters open to half that or just a tad higher even with the help of 3D.The biggest local opening is Howl's Moving Castle with 1.48 billion. Easier to achieve, but nothing has opened that high since 2006 (Pirates 2). Since Japan has been a major market for half a century, no inflation to speak of, and an audience that don't rush out opening week, records, especially opening records, hold for a very, very long time. With Evangelion 3.0, we'll be looking at is possibly one of the biggest openings in more recent years, possible PSA/PTA records, theater sellouts all weekend, and stats like that. It may also claim the biggest opening weekend for an animated film not directed by Hayao Miyazaki. It would need to beat One Piece Film Strong World's 1.04 billion opening weekend to do so. It's interesting, not a single Hollywood animated film has ever opened to 1 billion before.

11/03-04

Weekend Ranking

1 (-) The Floating Castle (Toho/Asmik Ace) NEW

2 (-) Chorus of Angels (TOEI) NEW

3 (1) Smile Pretty Cure: Big Mismatch in a Picture Book (TOEI) Week 2

4 (-) Fly with the Gold (Shochiku) NEW

5 (-) Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (Fox) NEW

6 (-) Paranormal Activity 4 (Paramount) NEW

7 (2) The Expendables 2 (Shochiku) Week 3

8 (3) Connection (Toho) Week 5

9 (4) Bayside Shakedown THE FINAL (Toho) Week 9

10 (7) Outrage 2: Beyond (Warner Bros.) Week 5

'The Floating Castle' opened to a very impressive ¥504,901,150 ($6.4 million) on 409,352 admissions since opening on Friday on 328 screens. The weekend figure itself hasn't been released yet, but should be around ¥400 million ($5 million), probably enough to earn a Top 15 Opening Weekend for the year.

Toho is projecting the film will reach ¥4 billion ($50 million), but they're just hyping the opening as usual and it's far more likely to settle with around ¥3 billion ($40 million), which is still a very good result.

'Chorus of Angels' (might be romanized as something different) did much better than early estimates were projecting. Playing on 330 screens, the film opened to ¥180,391,800 ($2.3 million) on 164,924 admissions over the weekend. That should be good enough to achieve the ¥1 billion ($12.5 million) milestone.

'Fly with the Gold' opened on 191 screens with ¥100,984,200 ($1.3 million) on 75,120 admissions for the weekend. A solid opening, and much needed for distributor Shochiku.

In fifth was 'Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter'. Fox released the film on 405 screens which brought in ¥99,390,800 ($1.3 million) on 66,343 admissions over the weekend. Not a great debut, but it could have been worse. And since opening on Thursday, it's grossed ¥170,011,300 ($2.2 million) on 123,059 admissions.

And lastly was 'Paranormal Activity 4'. Playing on 156 screens, it earned ¥60,655,700 ($760,000 ) on 48,553 admissions for the weekend. That's a slight improvement over it's predecessor, and it's grossed ¥91,870,300 ($1.2 million) on 77,317 admissions since opening on Thursday as well (Local Holiday).

And outside the Top 10,'The Intouchables' became the most attended french film in history topping 'Amelie's 1,038,763 admissions after 65 days in release. Since opening on 9/1, the film has grossed ¥1,302,465,000 ($16.4 million) on 1,063,785 admissions (multiplier up to 16.7x). And to become the highest grossing french film in history, it still needs to beat 'Amelie's ¥1.60 billion total. In my opinion, 'The Intouchables' is the most impressive imported release (including Hollywood releases) this year.

My guess is Amelie played largely in cities resulting in much higher tickets. I'm not sure what it's rating was in Japan, but it seems to be R (or the equivalent of an R) in most other countries. If that was the same in Japan, that would have also driven up the avg. ticket price significantly, too, since adult tickets are more expensive.

'Bayside Shakedown THE FINAL' is taking awhile to reach 'Thermae Romae', but it should surpass it by the end of the end of the month and exceed ¥6 billion.

'Resident Evil: Retribution' had a great week before Saturday. It collapsed putting ¥4 billion ($50 million) possibly out of reach. It's performed very well regardless whether it reaches that goal or not, but it definitely could have made if it didn't lose so many screens this weekend.

'The Floating Castle' barely misses a Top 15 Opening Weekend, but still a great debut. And the first film to debut on the charts in over a month. We'll see many films open well this month, though.

Thanks Corpse for the update. I'm a bit disappointed that they put RE out of so many screens, when it's been doing so well. Now it looks like it'll finish at about $49.5 million, which is still good. A quick question though, on Box Office Mojo they have RE as $48,133,947, so obviously they've put the wrong gross haven't they? If they have, i'll contact them and get them to fix it.

Finding an actual in USD is really difficult so they're not technically wrong really. What BOM does though is take a film's total and converts that each week instead of the weekly/weekend gross which can screw up the numbers. For example, say the exchange rate suddenly became 90 by next weekend (not happening, but an example). It would take the 3.85 billion yen total and convert that to $42.7 million. The film didn't really lose nearly $6 million, it would just be an inaccurate conversion BOM always does. You can even see a example on their weekend charts with Harry Potter 1. It's USD total kept going up and down each week late in it's release due to a changing exchange rate when only it's USD weekly/weekend gross should have been going up and down. This is why it's ALWAYS best to search for another source for international numbers than BOM if you can. Not to mention they never update the total once a film falls off the charts even though they're definitely still in release. You can't really expect them to update totals based on weekly/weekend numbers for every single country, every week though, so I think it's best to look at BOM's international totals as estimates or rough totals if there's no other source.

11/10-11

Weekend Forecast

Posted Image

1 (-) Holy Scripture of Evil (Toho) ¥420 million ($5.3 million) NEW

2 (1) The Floating Castle (Toho/Asmik Ace) ¥280 million ($3.6 million) Week 2

3 (2) Chorus of Angels (TOEI) ¥130 million ($1.7 million) Week 2

4 (-) Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away (Paramount) ¥120 million ($1.6 million) NEW

5 (3) Smile Pretty Cure! Big Mismatch in a Picture Book! (TOEI) ¥100 million ($1.3 million) Week 3

6 (4) Fly with the Gold (Shochiku) ¥70 million ($900,000) Week 2

7 (5) Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (Fox) ¥60 million ($750,000) Week 2

8 (8) Connection (Toho) ¥40 million ($500,000) Week 6

9 (6) Paranormal Activity 2 (Paramount) ¥35 million ($450,000) Week 2

10 (7) The Expendables 2 (Shochiku) ¥35 million ($450,000) Week 4

'Holy Scripture of Evil', starring Hideaki Ito (Umizaru franchise), is Toho's biggest release this Nov/Dec and the goal will be a ¥3 billion ($40 million) total. The film has a R15+ rating, uncommon in the market, and is likely to be the biggest R15+ film of the year.

Toho is also co-distributing 'The Floating Castle' which looks to have a similar total around ¥3 billion ($40 million).

'Cirque du Soleil' is opening early on Friday which will deflate it's opening weekend a bit, and I think it'll struggle to rank in the Top 5 in admissions. However, the 3D share should be quite high for this one to secure a Top 5 debut regardless of admissions.
