JAPAN BOX OFFICE | Demon Slayer breaks all time record for OW

Recommended Posts

Man, PR really didn't hit it big in Japan. Pretty disappointing run, especially since this was supposed to be THE territory for PR.

Holy hell man, it's only been out for 9 days. Check it's pulse before you declare it dead.

The Wind Rises makes it 5-consecutive weeks in 1st place, dropping just 7% once again this weekend. It earned¥473,795,100 ($4.9 million) and 352,322 admissions during the weekend, bringing it's 30-day total over ¥7.2 billion ($74 million) and 5.8 million admissions. The film added approx. ¥1.6 billion ($17 million) and 1.3 million admissions over the past 7 days, up about 30% week-to-week.

Monsters University stayed strong during the holiday, too, moving back up to 2nd place and is estimated to be over ¥7.6 billion ($78 million) with nearly 6 million admissions after 44-days in release.

Moving up a spot from last week was The After-Dinner Mysteries, enjoying a very health Obon week to exceed ¥2 billion ($21 million) after 16-days in release. The film added nearly ¥1 billion ($10/11 million) over the past 7 days, up over 80% week-to-week.

And debuting in a decent 5th place, White House Down opened on 444 screens - earning ¥190,228,800 ($2.0 million) and 156,286 admissions over the weekend. Not a bad number at all, and it might be able to reach a ¥1 billion ($11/12 million) total.

The Smurfs 2 bombs as expected.

Pacific Rim is so disappointing there, it's a non-sense :(

Japanese film goers don't need Hollywood to see films with a Japanese source, most of the market is Japanese films already.

No, no Japanese is as ambitious as PR. There is a difference between a 2D movie and a live movie, it's completely different.

The real problem is certainly its marketing, a lot of Japanese probably ignore its existence, because it would be successful otherwise :)

Japanese films could never have the budget of big Hollywood fare, but that hasn't stopped Japanese films from making more money than Hollywood films.

Wrong. A few years ago Hollywood movies had a bigger market share than Japanese movies. It's a recent turn of events, and I think it won't last forever.

It's not wrong if the statement is correct, which you yourself admit in your post. Most relevant to this thread, it is true right now.

I pray for Hollywood's bankrupt all the time. I want to see the rise of international films because that way people will see the stories of other cultures in their own terms and without the inherent racism and ethnocentrism that the American movies have.

The western media needs to fall and to lose influence in favour of more pluralism.
