JAPAN BOX OFFICE | Demon Slayer breaks all time record for OW

Recommended Posts

It opened so well because it opened on a Holiday Week. It's kinda like having Christmas 4 or 5 days in a row, there's no equivalent of this week in the US.It would need a 6-day multiplier of 6 (the avg. multiplier of a film opening on the weekend itself) to reach $100 million, and that is definitely not going to happen. WOM appears solid enough, but not out of this world and Holidays and Summer Vacation are at and end. Generally, films that have opened on Tuesday or Wednesday during Golden Week or Obon Week have achieved a 2.5 6-day multiplier, so 3 would be the maximum for about 4 billion yen ($50 million).

I think it's safe to say, everyone is satisfied with the way TA opened. What kind of drop are you expecting for the next weekend? Edited by druv10

Thanks for explanations This is why 100M is unlikekly to happen.I can see that even with a multiplier of 3 it is 50M max.Anyway, there are exceptions to this rule. Not one, but many. If other megablockbusters can open inJjapan with similar opennig week and eventually end with 80+M (sometimes even more than 100M) why not TA? Yes, most of them openned during summer or decembe (maybe this is why the most potential blockbusters dont open that late durin odon week - i wonder why TA did) . But then again there are some exceptions, april/may releases which got 100M. As I said, TA is exceptional in many ways, i am looking forward to be surprised by Japan, hopefully. :)

How big will Rurouni Kenshin open ?

Buzz seems high, and it's been advertised very well. It's received promotions of various kinds since Spring. It also has some previews before it opens this Saturday suggesting the film is at least pretty good since early bad WOM could hurt a fanboy film like this. I expect it to open pretty well, perhaps in the 250-300 million yen ($3/4 million) range and gross 1.5-2 billion yen ($20-25 million). Should be a tight race at the top this coming weekend between it, Prometheus, and The Avenger's second weekend.

Weekend Ranking

August 18-19

1 (-) The Avengers (Disney) NEW

2 (1) Umizaru: Brave Hearts (Toho) Week 6

3 (2) The Wolf Children Ame and Yuki (Toho) Week 5

4 (4) Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted (Paramount) Week 3

5 (6) Pokemon BW: Kyurem Vs. The Sacred Swordsman (Toho) Week 6

6 (5) Kamen Rider Fourze: Everyone, Space is Here! (TOEI) Week 3

7 (3) Total Recall (FOX) Week 2

8 (7) The Dark Knight Rises (Warner Bros.) Week 4

9 (-) Fairy Tail: Priestess of the Phoenix (Shochiku) NEW

10 (8) Naruto: Road to Ninja (Toho) Week 4

'The Avenger's' grossed ¥500,932,250 million ($6.3 million) on 326,109 admissions over the weekend on 844 screens, bringing it's 6-day, Obon Week total to ¥1,386,002,350 ($17.5 million) on 940,171 admissions. The weekend was quite impressive, and the average ticket price was a staggering ¥1,536 ($19.50). The 3D share wasn't released, though it's surely over 70/75% making it the highest all year.

'Umizaru: Brave Hearts' exceeds ¥6 billion ($76 million) and 4.7 million admissions after six weeks in release. The fourth film in the series becomes the highest grossing, most attended film of 2012 unseating 'Thermae Romae'.

'Wolf Children' exceeds ¥2.9 billion ($37 million) and 2.4 million admissions after five weeks. The feature is now ahead of 'Kokuriko Hill' at the same point in time, meaning ¥4 billion ($50 million) is locked and it's chances at ¥4.5 billion ($55 million) or more are pretty good.

'Pokemon 15' exceeds ¥3 billion ($38 million) and 2.8 million admissions after six weeks in release. Pokemon films slow tremendously after August, so ¥3.5-3.7 billion ($45/46 million) is probably the best this year's film will manage.

'Fairy Tail' debuts to a solid ¥60,283,700 ($760,000) on 52,795 admissions over the weekend on just 73 screens.

Outside the Top 10, 'Heruta Skelter' reaches ¥1.9 billion ($24 million) after six weeks in release.

Why are tickets for Pokemon significantly cheaper than for Wolf Children? I remember the same thing last year between the Pokemon movie then and Kokuriko Hill.

Pokemon sells millions of tickets (2 million+ the last 5 years) in advance at a discount price (800 yen) since there's always a promotion, such as a new legendary Pokemon download, to go along with them. The advance ticket sales weren't announced this year, so I'm assuming they missed the 2 million mark this time. The audience is also young making the general admission fee just 1,000 yen at most locations.

'Umizaru 4' eases it's way into the #1 spot of the year. It's still tracking ahead of 'Bayside Shakedown 3', so ¥8 billion ($100 million) is still in play.

'Wolf Children' and 'Pokemon' both reach ¥3 billion, though the former will overtake the latter in just a few days. Both films will pass 'Spider-Man' before the weekend begins.

'The Avengers' debuts on the chart at #34 after 6 days in release.

Great opening for 'The Avengers', managing a Top 10 spot even though it opened early.

Awesome for TA especially when you consider it had 4 days of Obon holidays and it still managed a top 10 OW.

I think it'll help Iron Man 3 some. Unsure about the rest.

Thanks. Are we going to get a mid week update or we will have to wait for the weekend? Edited by druv10

Only if it crosses 2 billion mark before entering weekend.

And almost $25 tickets to boost it. :P In admissions, it's OW would be 14th.

True but it also had 4 days of Obon holidays so OW was definitely deflated. Regardless, It's good though that a SH movie other than SM broke into Japanese conscious. How about the update question?
