JAPAN BOX OFFICE | Demon Slayer breaks all time record for OW

Recommended Posts

I made a small error reporting Wald 9's midnights (all 9 screens for 1,800+ tickets worth) being sold out after 3 days of being announced. They were announced 3 days ago, but went on sale today and sold out in literally minutes setting what appears to be a record.

Reports below:

This person says this screen (the biggest, 429 seats) sold out in 4 minutes and was too late trying to get another ticket on the other 8 screens.

This guy says he tried to get a midnight ticket as soon as they went on sale but was too late with them being gone in 2(!) minutes. So he had to settle for 2:50AM and 5:20AM (showtime just added) tickets.

The Wald 9 is nearly booked for the entire weekend with 7 days to go. I very much doubt the few remaining seats (almost exclusively Sunday night now) will be available in one or two days tops. And when it does sell out the entire weekend, that's at least 8,700 tickets sold from that theater alone resulting in about 13 million yen ($165,000) opening weekend (Sat. and Sun.).

11/10-11

Weekend Estimates

1 (1) The Floating Castle (Toho/Asmik Ace) ¥296 million ($3.7 million), -27%, Week 2

2 (-) Holy Scripture of Evil (Toho) ¥270 million ($3.4 million) NEW

3 (2) Chorus of Angels (TOEI) ¥151 million ($1.9 million), -16%, Week 2

4 (3) Smile Pretty Cure! Big Mismatch in a Picture Book! (TOEI) ¥102 million ($1.3 million), -29%, Week 3

5 (-) Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away (Paramount) ¥67 million ($850,000) NEW

6 (4) Fly with the Gold (Shochiku) ¥56 million ($705,000), -44%, Week 2

7 (5) Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (Fox) ¥55 million ($695,000), -45%, Week 2

8 (6) Paranormal Activity 4 (Paramount) ¥40 million ($500,000), -35%, Week 2

9 (9) Bayside Shakedown THE FINAL (Toho) ¥29 million ($365,000), -33%, Week 10

10 (8) Connection (Toho) ¥28 million ($350,000), -46%, Week 6

11 (7) The Expendables 2 (Shochiku) ¥28 million ($350,000), -52%, Week 4

12 (10) Outrage 2: Beyond (Warner Bros.) ¥20 million ($250,000), -50%, Week 6

Great second weekend for 'The Floating Castle'. Even though estimates can be off some weeks, I think it's safe to call a second weekend on top. ¥3 billion (about $40 million) becomes more likely.

So-so for 'Holy Scripture'. Toho was certainly wanting more, but this is still I believe the best opening for a R15+ film this year edging out 'Outrage 2: Beyond'. ¥2 billion ($25 million) becomes the target goal now.

Meh debut for 'Cirque du Soleil'. Admissions won't be pretty considering the 3D share should be high for this film.

The films at the bottom of the Top 10 are estimated to have grossed practically the same and we won't know the actual ranking there until tomorrow at the earliest. It would be spectacular if 'Bayside Shakedown THE FINAL' manages a 10th weekend in the Top 10, though.

You're looking at it in the wrong way. They're being auctioned off because the demand is so high right now, and people/fans are willing to pay the extra money to see it at midnight (which all 1,800 tickets were sold out in Shinjuku in a reported 14 minutes). The film is also playing in 224 theaters. That's about average for a local film but other local blockbusters generally get 400 or so theaters. We're talking about possibly the biggest opening this year with possible PSA records in play, too.

But I think it a question of temperament. In America and Europe we build theaters without end and end up with having too many. In Japan they simply wait and wait for their turn to see the movie.

Cities in EU and NA have much lower population density (/km²) compared with Japan and Asia countries. That may explain why.

http://en.wikipedia....r_by_population

If theaters can be easily reached within a few KMs, there is no need built any more. In the end, Japan has much higher overal per theater attendence through yearly.

I don't think it is a question of population densities. You can use the apropriate mode of transport to get to the theatre. (For me next theatre 5 min on foot, next IMAX 20 min by underground).Number of cinema screens per million populationTitle Figure Date Source NotesBerlin 77 2011 Filmförderungsanstalt Istanbul 38 2010 Ministry of Culture and Tourism - "Istanbul Film Industry Report" Johannesburg-Gauteng 33 2012 NFVF/VANSA Mumbai 19 2012 Tata Institute of Social Sciences New York 61 2012 Cinematreasures.org/Mrmovietimes Paris 85 2010 CNC São Paulo 33 2011 ECINE Figures updated from printed reportShanghai 28 2010 Shanghai Yearbook 2011 Singapore 47 2010 BOP Sydney 64 2012 Movie Fix/Screen Australia Figure estimated from regional figureTokyo 25 2010 Industrial Statistics Office, Research and Statistics Department, Economic and Industrial Policy Bureau, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.even Shanghai has more screens per population than TokyoVienna does not appear in this statistic, but I found numbers 171 for screens and 1.73m for population, so 100 per million population in Vienna (4 times Tokyo)

Absolutely incredible! It's been so long since anything has made such an impact at the box office on this scale.

It's weekend PTA is on par with Harry Potter 7.2 ($17,600), Alice in Wonderland ($13,100), Pirates 4 ($17,200), and Toy Story 3 ($21,000) when they're combined.

(Harry Potter + Pirates + Alice + Toy Story) = $68,900 vs. $67,200 (Evangelion 3.0)

Nice, that's incredible for Evangelion. These movies are really great, they deserve the money they're making, the final part will probably outgross 3.0, right?

I'm not sure yet. It's possible this is the peak.User reviews are a little mixed for 3.0. I don't want to read too many reviews, but skimming them I've seen most agree the film is confusing, too short (106 mins isn't that short though), and the ending left them "depressed".The legs for 3.0 will help determine what 4.0 could do at the box office... next year! It was just announced to be released in 2013. Edited by Corpse
