Saturday Estimates (3/30)

Rank / Film / Sat. Est. / % change from last Sat. / Week in Release
1 Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods (Toei) ¥370 million ($3.9 million), 0, DEBUT! [311 theaters]
2 Wreck-It Ralph (Disney) ¥156 million ($1.7 million), -8%, Week 2
3 Doraemon: Nobita's Secret Gadget Museum (Toho) ¥143 million ($1.6 million), +10%, Week 4
4 Platinum Data (Toho) ¥105 million ($1.2 million), -13%, Week 3
5 Aibou Series: X-Day (Toei) ¥69 million ($740,000), -38%, Week 2
6 Pretty Cure All Stars: New Stage 2 (Toei) ¥46 million ($490,000), -20%, Week 3
7 Oz: The Great and Powerful (Disney) ¥45 million ($480,000), -19%, Week 4
8 Jack the Giant Slayer (Warner Bros.) ¥34 million ($360,000), -29%, Week 2
9 7 Days of Himawari & Her Puppies (Shochiku) ¥19 million ($205,000), -22%, Week 3
10 My Friendship Diary (Showgate) ¥14 million ($150,000), -36%, Week 2
11 Nobody's Perfect 3 (Toho) ¥11 million ($120,000), -32%, Week 2

Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods mirrored Doraemon: Nobita's Secret Gadget Museum's opening day by selling 0.9% more tickets at the usual locations.

This has Dragon Ball Z heading for about 600,000 admissions this weekend, but that number should be closer to 550,000 when accounting for a little more frontloadedness (though it is Spring Break), but with having a higher avg. ticket price will still get it over ¥600 million ($6.5 million) and might come close to Doraemon's huge opening (¥667 million) earlier this month. And an opening of ¥600 million+ makes reaching ¥3 billion ($35 million) and becoming the highest-grossing film in the franchise very likely. The 17-year wait and having Akira Toriyama apart of the production for once is definitely paying off.

Ralph and Doraemon are in a close battle for second place. It's too close to call it before Sunday, though Doraemon almost always sees a much stronger Sunday than Saturday, so it's in a stronger position to win (at least in admissions).

Weekend Estimates (3/30-31)

Rank / Film / Wknd. Est. / % Change / Week in Release
1 (-) Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods (Toei) ¥635 million ($6.8 million), 0, DEBUT! [311 theaters]
2 (1) Wreck-It Ralph (Disney) ¥316 million ($3.4 million), -7%, Week 2
3 (2) Doraemon: Nobita's Secret Gadget Museum (Toho) ¥292 million ($3.1 million), +2%, Week 4
4 (3) Platinum Data (Toho) ¥204 million ($2.2 million), -15%, Week 3
5 (4) Aibou Series: X-Day (Toei) ¥144 million ($1.6 million), -32%, Week 2
6 (5) Pretty Cure All Stars: New Stage 2 (Toei) ¥97 million ($1.1 million), -16%, Week 3
7 (6) Oz: The Great and Powerful (Disney) ¥92 million ($980,000), -16%, Week 4
8 (7) Jack the Giant Slayer (Warner Bros.) ¥66 million ($705,000), -29%, Week 2
9 (8) 7 Days of Himawari & Her Puppies (Shochiku) ¥39 million ($415,000), -20%, Week 3
10 (9) My Friendship Diary (Showgate) ¥27 million ($290,000), -40%, Week 2
11 (10) Nobody's Perfect 3 (Toho) ¥26 million ($270,000), -24%, Week 2

Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods sold 89% of the tickets Doraemon: Nobita's Secret Gadget Museum did on opening weekend, which would give it about 530,000 admissions for the weekend and an opening between ¥600-650 million ($6.5-7 million) depending on it's avg. ticket price. This would be a spectacular opening, and the fourth biggest in the past 6 months. I don't know how IMAX will effect the film, being the first local film in IMAX and all, so there could be room for a little more still. The film is likely to stay on top for 3 weeks as well until Detectice Conan: Private Eye in the Distant Sea opens on 4/20.

Wreck-It Ralph held very well in it's second weekend. I know it's Spring Break week, but the hold is a sure sign WOM is probably matching the excellent reviews the film received.

Doraemon: Nobita's Secret Gadget Museum appears to be the only film to have seen an increase this weekend, but it's smaller than a number of past films in the franchise that have increased in the double digits before. Still a great fourth weekend number, and the second biggest fourth weekend in the long-running franchise keeping the franchise record in sight and perhaps ¥4 billion ($45 million) in range, too.

Platinum Data held surprisingly well, the best among the live-action films in the Top 11. I think it'll reach ¥2.5 billion ($30 million) now without too much difficultly (watch it collapse post-Spring Break now that I've said that).

Top 5 Opening Weekends (Since October 2012)

¥1.372 billion ($16.7 million) / 1,140,081 :: One Piece Film Z [300]
¥1.133 billion ($14.1 million) / 771,764 :: Evangelion 3.0: You Can (Not) Redo [223]
¥667.3 million ($7.2 million) / 597,899 :: Doraemon: Nobita's Secret Gadget Museum [353]
¥635.0 million ($6.8 million) / 530,000 :: Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods [311] Est.
¥456.8 million ($5.5 million) / 357,976 :: Hunter X Hunter: The Phantom Rouge [257]

All franchise records, and One Piece and Evangelion broke more than just franchise records, too. One Piece claimed the all-time domestic opening day and weekend record in admissions and USD gross (and overall since 2007), and #&% of weekend sellouts (this record includes imported-releases).

Detective Conan: Private Eye in the Distant Sea opens in three weeks and will bump Hunter X Hunter out of the Top 5 giving anime films the Top 6 openings.

Weekend Ranking (3/30-31)

1 (-) Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods (Toei) DEBUT!
2 (1) Wreck-It Ralph (Disney) Week 2
3 (2) Doraemon: Nobita's Secret Gadget Museum (Toho) Week 4
4 (3) Platinum Data (Toho) Week 3
5 (4) Aibou Series: X-Day (Toei) Week 2
6 (5) Pretty Cure All Stars: New Stage 2 (Toei) Week 3
7 (6) Oz: The Great and Powerful (Disney) Week 4
8 (7) Jack the Giant Slayer (Warner Bros.) Week 2
9 (8) 7 Days of Himawari & Her Puppies (Shochiku) Week 3
10 (10) Nobody's Perfect (Toho) Week 2

Opening higher than estimates, Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods grossed an incredible ¥683,924,950 ($7.32 million) with 561,098 admissions over the weekend on 312 screens. It was the first Japanese film to ever open in IMAX, on which it earned $450,000 on 16 screens. This is the second biggest opening of the year, and the third biggest in the past 6 months. And even if it ends up being really frontloaded, it won't do less than $30 million and might pull off a $40 million total.

Wreck-It Ralph managed an increase of 4% in it's second weekend already showcasing it's strong WOM, while Doraemon 34 saw a nice 6% increase over last weekend. Ralph has already exceeded ¥1 billion ($12 million) and 1 million admissions after 10 days in release, and Doraemon 34 continued to add to it's franchise record run and broke 2.5 million admissions after just 23 days.

Platinum Data was thought to fall apart after mixed reviews, critics and audiences alike, but has done well for itself having exceeded ¥1.5 billion ($17 million) after 16 days.

Oz: The Great and Powerful got off to a slow start, but has been having solid legs and reached 1 million admissions this weekend.

*Top 10 Films Only

BIG weekend thanks to Dragon Ball Z and increases from holdovers Wreck-It Ralph and Doraemon 34, this is the first weekend of the year to break ¥2 billion and puts 2013 well ahead of 2012 after three full months.

Weekends only account for 45-50% of the yearly box-office in Japan, so I'm estimating the 2013 year to be around ¥43/44 billion ($460-480 million) after three months when including earnings from Dec. holdovers.

The biggest weekend of all-time belongs to April 17-18, 2010's huge ¥3,161,803,053. I don't think any weekend this year will challenge that unless it occurs on July 20-21 when Miyazaki's The Wind Rises opens with Monsters University and Pokemon 16 as the top holdovers in their second and third weeks.

The announcement of Finding Dory got over 1,000 retweets on cinematoday.jp yesterday.

http://www.cinematoday.jp/page/N0051745

I've seen a few movie articles get more than that before, but over 1,000 retweets is usually reserved for deaths of famous actors or directors (Richard Griffith's got 1,900).

Finding Nemo remains Walt Disney Pictures and Pixar's most-attended film in Japan, and second highest-grossing.

1. Alice in Wonderland - ¥11.8 billion ($142 million), 7.4 million admissions.
2. Finding Nemo - ¥11.0 billion ($102 million), 8.6 million admissions.
3. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End - ¥10.9 billion ($102 million) 8.2 million admissions.
4. Toy Story 3 - ¥10.8 billion ($130 million), 7.3 million admissions.
5. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest - ¥10.02 billion ($84 million), 7.75 million admissions
6. Monsters Inc - ¥9.37 billion ($76 million), 7.6 million admissions.
7. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides - ¥8.87 billion ($114 million), 5.85 million admissions.
8. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe - ¥6.86 billion ($59 million), 5.65 million admissions.
9. Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl - ¥6.80 billion ($61 million), 5.5 million admissions
10. The Incredibles - ¥5.26 billion ($51 million), 4.3 million admissions.

Saturday Estimates (4/06)

1 Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods (Toei) ¥177 million ($1.9 million), -52%, Week 2
2 Wreck-It Ralph (Disney) ¥147 million ($1.6 million), -16%, Week 3
3 Doraemon: Nobita's Secret Gadget Museum (Toho) ¥102 million ($1.1 million), -33%, Week 5
4 Platinum Data (Toho) ¥65 million ($690,000), -36%, Week 4
5 Aibou Series: X-Day (Toei) ¥50 million ($530,000), -39%, Week 3
6 Oz: The Great and Powerful (Disney) ¥36 million ($380,000), -21%, Week 5
7 Pretty Cure All Stars: New Stage 2 (Toei) ¥35 million ($370,000), -31%, Week 4
8 Jack the Giant Slayer (Warner Bros.) ¥26 million ($275,000), -29%, Week 3
9 7 Days of Himawari & Her Puppies (Shochiku) ¥13 million ($135,000), -33%, Week 4
10 Nobody's Perfect 3 (Toho) ¥11 million ($115,000), -16%, Week 3

Only one wide (barely) opener this weekend, Orpheus' Lyre, and estimates have it doing just under ¥10 million ($100,000) and probably missing the Top 10. The only change in the Top 10 is Oz over Pretty Cure, but they're so close they may end up in the same positions as last week tomorrow

Not bad for Dragon Ball Z. It exceeded 1 million admissions and ¥1.2 billion ($14 million) this past Thursday, it's sixth day in release.

Excellent drop for Ralph following Spring Break week. It should be close to or over ¥2 billion ($20-22 million) after this weekend. Next week will be most telling on whether it drops significantly like most kid/family films do after break or if it's going to turn into a mini-Monsters Inc from 11 years ago which was also released in March.

Weekend Estimates (4/6-7)

1 (1) Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods (Toei) ¥361 million ($3.8 million), -47%, Week 2
2 (2) Wreck-It Ralph (Disney) ¥282 million ($3.0 million), -20%, Week 3
3 (3) Doraemon: Nobita's Secret Gadget Museum (Toho) ¥185 million ($2.0 million), -39%, Week 5
4 (4) Platinum Data (Toho) ¥130 million ($1.4 million), -36%, Week 4
5 (5) Aibou Series: X-Day (Toei) ¥106 million ($1.1 million), -33%, Week 3
6 (6) Pretty Cure All Stars: New Stage 2 (Toei) ¥66 million ($690,000), -36%, Week 4
7 (7) Oz: The Great and Powerful (Disney) ¥64 million ($670,000), -31%, Week 5
8 (8) Jack the Giant Slayer (Warner Bros.) ¥49 million ($515,000), -33%, Week 3
9 (9) 7 Days of Himawari & Her Puppies (Shochiku) ¥19 million ($205,000), -42%, Week 4
10 (-) Orpheus' Lyre (Showgate) ¥17 million ($180,000), 0, DEBUT! [109 theaters]

Orpheus' Lyre narrowly beat Nobody's Perfect 3 to earn a Top 10 debut.
Dragon Ball Z pulling off the sub-50% drop is impressive and it's well on it's way to becoming the highest-grossing film in the franchise.
Ralph has the best hold in the Top 10 and is a strong indication it's not going to fall apart now that Spring Break is over.

10 Pretty Cure All Stars: New Stage 2 (Toei) ¥16 million ($165,000), -52%, Week 5

Some rough drops now that Spring Break is over, especially for films that skew toward children or families.

Nice number for We Knit Ship with a good chance at the Top 3. Aoi Miyazaki proves to be the most reliable young female draw in the country yet again here. Had anyone else been in the film, I doubt it would have debuted above 7th/8th this weekend.

Wreck-It Ralph wasn't able to avoid the drop-off nearly all children/family films get this time of year, though avoiding a 50%, probably sub-45% for the weekend, is pretty good.

Overall, a typical slow weekend after the break with several notable releases coming up soon in time for Golden Week.

10 (-) Hana Kappa: The Movie (Toho Video Division) ¥30 million ($310,000), 0, DEBUT! [146 theaters]

Great Sunday recovery across the board.

Dragon Ball Z secured itself an impressive third-consecutive week in first place. Detective Conan will easily take it away next weekend, however. There's been an animated feature on top of the past 11/17 weekends.

Wreck-It Ralph impresses again mostly unfazed by school being back in session. Unlike in most other markets, kid/family films struggle even on weekends outside of Summer and Holidays. The competitive education system leaves little time for going to the movies when school's in session.

We Knit Ship is a great success for Shochiku and Asmik Ace. It might fall to fourth when actuals come out, but as long as it stays above ¥100 million it'll be Shochiku's second only live-action film to open above the mark in the past 9-months. Legs for these films are generally really strong, so perhaps it has an outside shot at ¥1 billion ($11 million).

Chinese Zodiac also did well for itself. I'm going to go ahead and predict it'll come in higher than estimates tomorrow and above Aibou Series due to an above avg. ticket price. The opening should be enough to reach ¥500 million ($6 million).

Those are some incredible holds for Platinum Data and Aibou Series. Along with Chinese Zodiac, they're the oldest skewing in the Top 10 right now, which is the main reason for the holds post-Spring Break, but they're still really, really good.

I forgot to half Hana Kappa's Saturday estimate yesterday so that's why it's unchanged.
