Weekend Ranking (7/6-7)

1 (-) Monsters University (Disney) DEBUT!
2 (-) Fast and Furious 6 (Toho-Towa) DEBUT!
3 (1) Midsummer Formula (Toho) Week 2
4 (-) Gintama: The Final Chapter (Warner Bros.) DEBUT!
5 (-) Anpanman: Handkerchief of Hope! (Tokyo Theaters, Co.) DEBUT!
6 (3) To Cry 100 Times (Showgate) Week 3
7 (2) After Earth (Sony) Week 3
8 (-) Ninja Kids 2 (Toei) DEBUT!
9 (4) The Great Gatsby (Warner Bros.) Week 4
10 (5) The Hangover Part III (Warner Bros.) Week 2

Monsters University got a huge start with ¥847,516,050 ($8.5 million) and 614,969 admissions on 661 screens. That's 87% of Toy Story 3's opening in revenue, and 95% of it's opening in admissions. It's also the best opening since One Piece Film Z last December in both revenue and admissions.

I don't think legs will be as strong, user reviews are good but not overwhelming like Toy Story 3, but such a large opening in July will probably get it up to ¥7-8 billion ($70-80 million) with 5-6 million admissions.

Fast and Furious 6 did well for itself, too, earning ¥445,551,500 ($4.5 million) with 330,385 admissions on 610 screens. It opened 11% lower than Fast Five, but as I've said, that film had 3 days worth of previews included into it's opening weekend. And Fast 6 will have no problem beating Fast 5's ¥1.44 billion total as it aims for ¥2.5 billion ($25 million).

Estimates were really off on Gintama: The Final Chapter though it still did extremely well. Playing on just 127 screens, the sequel earned 281,859,900 ($2.9 million) with 221,469 admissions. This is 42% ahead of it's predecessor and should result in a total over ¥1.5 billion ($16 million).

Anpanman: Handkerchief of Hope! debuts within the Top 5 on only 143 screens, but no weekend data was released for the film.

Ninja Kids 2 did very poorly earning just ¥42,988,100 ($430,000) with 36,937 admissions on 290 screens. This is barely half of what the original film grossed opening weekend on less than half the amount of screens.

From Corpse

"I guess WOM is average-to-good based on user reviews for Monsters University. WOM only really matters though if it's toxic or overwhelmingly good. And since it's sort of the only film this Summer appealing to children (Pokemon has a constant fanbase that never effects or is effected by competition, and Miyazaki's The Wind Rises is Ghibli's most adult film yet), legs will be just fine even if WOM was toxic. No worries"
