chasmmi
And they should generously support more indie films and the small works of great artists like Hong Sang-soo & Kim Ki-duk. There's more chance of Kim kiduk being the first Korean on the moon that to receive substantial help from the Korean film industry.
Rsyu
How is that OD for Maze Runner? Pretty poor. It's currently first in presales though and initial ratings from naver is pretty good (8.93) so hopefully decent legs.
bartonfink
Well I don't use the word "conventional" as negatively. But I think the movie's basic plot & theme are general and familiar rather than refreshing. it's mostly about getting over each one's adversity, praise for healing power of music, commercialism vs sincerity etc...well at least male-female lead characters didn't become a fair of lovers. That reminds me of Once which the director's previous work, but somewhat refreshing. And I agree catchy musics can add artistic nature of the film. But I suspect many fans of the movie are just the ones who like sweet, tender pop songs. Their way of thinking and consumption about movie maybe plain & simple. And as you said, Her & Grand Budapest Hotel are also identified as art-house films. But I didn't mean art-house film can't got stars. I mean familiar stars surely can draw audiences easier than great yet nameless actors. There are so many small films that don't have stars. And even if they're good films, they are unfairly & quickly forgotten mostly. I think what Kofic needs to support are them. I guess all of us perceive concept of art-house films differently. I remember once Park Chan-wook said, "I'm just commercial movie director." But as I know, some audiences often think he makes too difficult and brutal, unkind artsy-fartsy movies. So interesting. Interesting views and yeah I agree with most of what you say. However I don't think Begin again is harming the arthouse film industry in any way by being labled as an art-film. It's main revenue is coming from mainstream theatres anyway where it's attracting more audiences than the so called "commercial films". Conventional arthouse films still get the same screen time in art theatres. Add to that, a lot of people here are still unfamiliar with the concept of arthouse films so it could be beneficial in the sense that it raises awareness. Rsyu
What is the weekend forecast for Maze Runner? OD and friday numbers as well as ratings and presales are looking very similar to Into the storm at the moment. So I'd say it looks like Saturday and Sunday together should be around 400-500K admissions. So a total admission figure of 500-600K for the weekend (Fri-Sun)

Rsyu
Woow, Maze Runner already passed The Hunger Games' total!! It opened higher than Catching fire OW, too Yes but the hunger games franchise bombed pitifully in Korea so unfortunately it isn't saying much at all that it passed it. Male/female ratio is split evenly 50-50 and surprisingly the main audience for this film seem to be females in their 40s. They also gave the highest rating of 9.60/10.0. I'm not sure whether it's the same for other countries but it strikes me more as a YA film. Naver ratings are pretty high, 8.86/10.0 after 2,414 votes so it should have decent legs.

Maze Runner is opening a bit less than HG in many coutries but is opening better in others. HG is a better movie IMO but I think Maze Runner will do better legs than HG, which weren't sooo good.
